The Dickerson dilemma

I trust the coaches. He just has to defend better and make better decisions.

I'm guessing he gets more minutes next year with Oglesby gone. Oglesby is getting a SURPRISING amount of playing time right now.....he must just tear it up in practice, which makes it hard on the coaches.

Call me crazy (most do) but I think the minutes Oglesby gets this year will go to some combination of Ellingson and Fleming next year.

Not bagging on you, because I don't see Trey being the level of either guard in front of him, but you're basing an argument on PTL stats.

The PTL is a no-defense, all-offense scoring pickup league, which a juco player who could score at the juco level SHOULD excel at.... and yet both Gesell and Clemmons were better scorers.

Iowa is going to have holes all over the place next year unless the Freshmen start playing immediately. Its possible next year that Clemmons could spell Jok and Dickerson could spell Gesell some of the time. Believe it or not Clemmons is a career 36% 3 point shooter in limited attempts. While 36% isn't "amazeballs" its right around Peter Jok's average and if Clemmons got more chances its possible he could improve upon that.

Ellingson is still unproven so right now I'd say that Gesell/Jok/Clemmons/Dickerson are your top 4 guards coming into 2015 until someone beats them out

Also, Dickerson needs to play next year if he's your only PG on the roster for the 2016 season, which he currently is.

My hope is that Dickerson can be the kind of player for Iowa DeAndre Mathieu is for MN. I think Mathieu is a handful and Dickerson looks to have the same skill set IMO. Mathieu came to MN last year with 2 years of eligibility. Dickerson came as a sophomore and has this year of working with the coaches...still has 2 years of eligibility.

He only shoots when he's wide open. If he shot more often, the degree of difficulty would go up.

I just can't believe Fran didn't push harder for Jahlil Okafor or Emmanuel Mudiay. Those guys would have been a big boost to the program. Mudiay ended up going to play overseas where no one can speak English. They were there for the taking.

I just think trey plays at a pace that the rest of the team isn't used to. The guys just don't react to what he's doing because they aren't used to it happening. For instance awhile back he made a nice move to the the top of the key and fired a pass to Woodbury which went blowing by him cause he wasn't ready for it. It was a great look, but Adam doesn't have that come at him regularly so he was like wtf?

His style of play is so much different then mikes steady and diliberate style and that's what they always see. Hopefully trey can develop and as a team they can learn to find the right spots and be ready for his deliveries because what I see is a guard who can beat someone off the dribble for once. Would be great for kick outs to open shooters....

He has a ways to go though...

If this is true then this year of practicing, etc. should help immensely next year. Also, the majority of the current playing rotation will be gone in 2 years...when Dickerson is a senior. The guys on the roster at that time should be used to his pace...which still has to be under control. I believe Fran's phrase is "We want to play fast not crazy." Right now Trey plays crazy.

It's funny, this off season everyone gave up on MG and replaced him with Trey...now giving up on Trey and would take a mop bucket on wheels to replace him. Trey will see his minutes to improve as he develops. Fran has found a way to get some sort of productivity out of every scholly he's used.

Yea he's made a couple of those. That's a pretty small sample size to make you think his percentage wouldn't dip if half of his shots were of that variety.

If Trey stays with it he will be fine. He doesn't get much playing time so when finally does get into the game, he is pressing because he is trying to prove himself. Give him consistent playing time and he could settle down and actually get into the rhythm of the game. Barring injury, he won't get the minutes this season. That is perfectly fine and as long as he can handle it mentally, he can become a better player for it.

I kind of see it as a similar situation as Jok was in last year. Jok didn't get much playing time and pressed when he was in the game. Finally this season he has gotten the chance to play extended minutes and has begun to flourish. Who's to say the same can't be done by Trey in a year or two down the road?

I think Dickerson should stay exactly where he is. He's the 3rd PG on the team, and needs time in the program to improve. His shot, although still poor, has improved quite a bit. His defense is still bad, but the game has seemed to slow down a bit for him. Barring injury, I don't think there is any reason why he would get meaningful minutes until his senior year. The main reason being he is the 3rd best PG on the team. I hope he continues to get better, and who knows, he could end up being very good.

I agree as the kid has a gear that no one else on this team has. I have seen kids who struggled early on blossom and go on and play in the NBA once they learned to harness themselves and play within themselves. One such young man not only played in the NBA but wears a championship ring. I believe his last name was Armstrong. Sound familiar?

I'm hoping he sees a ton of minutes in the non conference next year and is in the regular rotation for conference play. It's too bad about this year because if he was just a little more under control he would possibly be our best option at point guard.

Even this year, his good plays are probably pretty close to making up for his bad plays. The good news is he's capable of making a lot of both and it seems pretty realistic to assume he will cut down a lot on his bad plays. Once he does, he should make a lot of good plays for us.

This. I think TD is going to develop well, if he continues to listen to his coaches. The kid has some serious talent. It just needs to be molded properly... Think about this for a minute - Dickerson has not been with one coaching staff for more than a year, probably EVER. Definitely not when it has mattered most - in HS & college.

TD needs to continue to learn to mix it up. Fast/slow. Run the offense/Drive and score/Drive and dish. With continued learning and development - which is ALL on TD as we have the coaches - I think Trey will earn a good chunk of minutes next year. Then have a fantastic senior season.

It may be wishful thinking on my part. But the kid has some serious talent.

It's nice to see a fearless kid that can blow bye guys of the bounce. With a team almost all below average 3 point shooters he's a breadth of fresh air.

His decision making would likely improve with my time on the floor.

MG's inability to shoot has really made it tough to score with him, White, JO and either center on floor.

its kind of sad how poor this team is at shooting. Most guys don't miss, they don't even bother taking open 3's.

If Trey is going to be a starting PG or one that see's significant minutes then he needs to work on his fundamentals.

He seems to have the tools to breakdown the first defender but after that he is lost. When he tries to kick the ball out to an open shooter his passes are rarely in a spot for them to go up and score.

He is fast and an okay shooter but is really lacking at decision making, defense and passing.

He needs a lot of work.

He needs quite a lot of work in the weight room too. Looks frail and tiny.

The real dilemma is that outside of Rutgers, who is almost unbelievably bad, Iowa may have the three worst PGs in the leauge all on the same team and none of them are graduating this year.

Your post doesn't even make sense in response to my post. I said Dickerson isn't way worse based on what i see out of CLEMMONS not DICKERSON. Then you respond with I'm seeing what i hope to see from Dickerson?

Then i say they shouldn't cut him loose because he will conribute as a senior and you ask me if i think wasting 3 years on a player to contribute 1 year is a good idea? Unless you're suggesting Fran somehow go back in time and cut him loose last year, he really only needs to decide if it's worth wasting 2 years of scholarship to have him contribute for 1 year.

You need to give d-vogs a pass, I think his cyclone buddies are in his head.......Their answer to everything is shove people out the door.

The Purdon't game changed that and now MG is playing the way we've been waiting for (minus the hyper-extended shooting elbow). This more than anything, I think, caused TD to sit.

But, TD is still the only pg on this team that can beat his defender off the dribble with no high screen or pick. That is what our offense really needs.

This year it is Gesell, Clemmons, Jok and Oglesby. So next year's rotation will likely be 4 players. Three of the guys are returning and will play. We can all have our varying opinions on how good each of these guys is but we all know they are going to play. So Dickerson, Fleming and Ellingson will be battling for the 4th spot in the rotation.

If Gesell and/or Clemmons becomes a reliable 3 point shooter then it could be Dickerson. If not then it almost has to be Fleming or Ellingson...if they can make shots from long range and are adequate on defense. It's also possible that we play Jok at the 3 some with both White and Olaseni leaving. This could move Jok to the 3 more with Uthoff at the 4. This opens up playing time for a 2nd player out of Dickerson, Fleming and Ellingson.

Thinking down the road...does anyone know what kind of handles Fleming has? Is it possible he and Dickerson play the point 2 years from now? That's what we did with Marble his sophomore year.
