The Dickerson dilemma

This year it is Gesell, Clemmons, Jok and Oglesby. So next year's rotation will likely be 4 players. Three of the guys are returning and will play. We can all have our varying opinions on how good each of these guys is but we all know they are going to play. So Dickerson, Fleming and Ellingson will be battling for the 4th spot in the rotation.

If Gesell and/or Clemmons becomes a reliable 3 point shooter then it could be Dickerson. If not then it almost has to be Fleming or Ellingson...if they can make shots from long range and are adequate on defense. It's also possible that we play Jok at the 3 some with both White and Olaseni leaving. This could move Jok to the 3 more with Uthoff at the 4. This opens up playing time for a 2nd player out of Dickerson, Fleming and Ellingson.

Thinking down the road...does anyone know what kind of handles Fleming has? Is it possible he and Dickerson play the point 2 years from now? That's what we did with Marble his sophomore year.

Windsor, Fleming isn't really a pg prospect, in my opinion. But I think he and Ellingson could legit shooters to the point where, they'll need minutes. I think Fran may toy with Uhl at pg to see if he has the ability to be a RDM-ish type pg. Uhl definitely has dribble drive ability. We'll see.

As for next season, I could see TD usurping Sapp. I just don't think Sapp is ever going to be a consistent enough scorer.

All I want from Trey is to keep improving this year and next in order to be ready as a Sr when he'll be needed. I don't see much need for his services until Mike and Clemmons are gone.

If Fran is still coaching Iowa, I expect Conner to come in and start at PG right away.

You can't be serious about Uhl playing PG? If that ever happens, we'll be in Lickliter trouble.

I'd bet big $$ that his son doesn't start at PG as a true freshman.

1). I'm not sure he is going to be able to play PG. He's much taller than a traditional PG and still growing.
2). I'm not convinced he's that good and going back to #1, he's been playing PG so far in high school. I don't think he will play that position in college so I wanna see him develop more into a wing/scorer.

Now say I'm wrong and Fran's son starts at PG. Trey will still be needed and a backup PG.

Dickerson and Connor McCaffery will not play together. Both are sophomores...one in college and one in high school. As to Connor not being that good...ranked #24 nationally in the sophomore class.

Connor's sophomore stats through 20 games are below. The team is 20-0.

14.1 ppg
3.9 apg
4.5 rpg
1.1 spg

Stats look good and national rankings are impressive. Now I've never seen the kid play in person so I'm only going off the videos I've seen on this site but I just haven't seen anything that seems that special.

So that's just where I'm at but I'm just one opinion on a small sample size. I'm sure the guys that do it for living and have watched him in person have a better feel on his ability and justify their rankings.

TD is caught behind 2 upper classman. He provides an explosiveness we do not have with MG & AC. He needed minutes early and often in the non con to work on learning how to harness his abilities. It did not happen but I think we all see in small stretches he brings something different to the table. Hope he sticks around and plays more next year. Gessell has been pretty solid in B1G play so this is not a knock on him.

Uhl is super interesting. His skill set is like Utoff's. He has better handles but maybe not as good of a shooting stroke as Jared. Looking forward to seeing how he develops and plays next year.

Tyus Jones at Duke has a score first mentality, he is a PG. He's goin got the NBA if not this year then next. I think having a PG like Gessel and Clemmons play then counter with DIckerson off the bench to keep the tempo up would work.

The reason I expect Conner to play PG, is because he will have the best grasp of what Fran wants to do with the offense, the moment he steps on the court. He can pass. He can shoot. Mark my words, unless Fran signs a highly ranked PG for the same class, Conner's playing PG. I don't care how tall he is.

Not bagging on you, because I don't see Trey being the level of either guard in front of him, but you're basing an argument on PTL stats.

Exactly. The PTL, where people like Clemmons put up 30 points in a game. And Trey can't even muster a single 3-pointer. Using PTL stats makes my case perfectly, that Trey can't score.

This. I think TD is going to develop well, if he continues to listen to his coaches. The kid has some serious talent. It just needs to be molded properly... Think about this for a minute - Dickerson has not been with one coaching staff for more than a year, probably EVER. Definitely not when it has mattered most - in HS & college.

TD needs to continue to learn to mix it up. Fast/slow. Run the offense/Drive and score/Drive and dish. With continued learning and development - which is ALL on TD as we have the coaches - I think Trey will earn a good chunk of minutes next year. Then have a fantastic senior season.

It may be wishful thinking on my part. But the kid has some serious talent.

I would say that he has some serious athletic ability. If he had serious talent, he would be a starter and and splitting time with Gesell. Don't confuse athletic ability with basketball skill; they are two completely different things.

I think it is clear that he is just WAYYYYY behind the two Jr PG. He doesnt play any D, (and Fran is very focused on D this year) and he plays too out of control, while showing almost no scoring ability. Hopefully the year experience will bring TD up to speed for next year, and if Fran doesn't think he can cut it, that he encourages him to move on then.

How or why it came to pass that TD is leaving, it is good for Iowa. He just wasn't B1G caliber and that is coming from a guy who was hoping he would come in, win the spot and push Gesell to a more combo guard roll. All the signs were pointing to it anyway as Iowa had hosted an Ill. guard a few weeks ago, is making a push for the Nick Noskowaik. I think this has been a done deal for awhile now.
