Tenn. & Nebraska coaching jobs

I only aksed the original question as the fans expectations at both schools in my belief is not possible to achieve for quite a while. Why would a coach, other than a huge ego, want to be a part of that if they have a good thing going where they’re at?

Both aren't elite jobs, but they are good jobs. Both are in what would be considered the easier division in their respective conferences. Both don't seem to have trouble recruiting talent, at least as far as recruiting rankings are concerned although Nebraska is more limited than Tennessee in that regard.
Tennessee has reached out it's feelers to Mike Gundy and the interest seems to be somewhat mutual. Gundy has done a great job at Oklahoma State and has a good thing going where he is at, but at some point he has to wonder if he's taken Oklahoma State about as far as he can take them. He could possibly take Tennessee where he hasn't been able to take Oklahoma State.
In regards to Nebraska, they are probably lucking out a bit that Scott Frost is an alum, but I think they could find another solid candidate if they needed to. The modern day ceiling is probably lower at Nebraska than at Tennessee, so poaching another Power 5 coach like Gundy is out of the question for them. I do think they could land a hot Group of 5 coach though like Norvell from Memphis or a hot coordinator like Brett Venables or Dave Aranda if Frost wasn't available to them.

Read on espn.com that Gundy is speaking with Tennessee. That mullet would do well down there in Vol-land. He's one guy that might fit in down there, but still not sure why he'd want to leave Okie State for Tennessee, other than to get out of Oklahoma's shadow. That may be the benefit of the Tennessee job right now, a coach has a lot of bargaining leverage.

I think Gundy talking to TN is a way to get OKSU to pony up cash. #leverage.
Hell he played ball at OSU, coached there a long time. He is OSU. Can't see him leaving. He can win at OSU, and even if he does not win the XII his fans will be happy.

Gundy put out tonight that he’s staying

Mississippi State found a good fit and a hot prospect in under 48 hours. This is how it goes when your AD has his mental list of guys he wants ready for when he has to make a hire. Tennessee is in freefall and might fire their AD while Nebrasks is waiting by the phone for some guy to make a phone call but if Frost doesn't call they are back to square one.

I think the difference here is that the Mississippi State isn't expecting to be able to poach a current head coach so their starting point is lower. They can hire a hot coordinator without the fan base losing their minds. Tennessee and Nebraska can set their sights a little higher and to be fair, both jobs are bigger than Mississippi State. Ideally you'd like an established coach that's been successful as the CEO before. That doesn't mean their expectations in terms of who they should end up with are reasonable, but they have a higher starting point. With that said, great hire by Mississippi State and I agree completely that their AD was on the ball.

The Tennessee AD has bought himself a world of trouble. It didn't seem like Schiano was a good fit for Tennessee in the first place, nothing to do with the Penn State allegations. I think you need to be a good ol' Southern boy to fit in down there, but then for the AD/others involved in the decision to be railroaded into a spineless decision to nix the deal, it's going to be really difficult to find someone who would want to live under that type of bs scrutiny and lack of support when things get rough.

Exactly. It's bad enough, in a coach's mind, to have to deal with "administrators". Having fans getting into the mix AND having a say in matters? No thanks.

How shitty to do that to Purdue after 1 year.
Yes, it is but he's probably getting offered 2-3 times what Purdue is paying. Sucks for Purdue and the B1G. He is a good coach and while I hated losing to them, having coaches like that in the league only helps the view from the outside world.

The UNL athletic department now owes 19.4 million to people who no longer work there.

Consider this, over the last 15 years, Nebraska has held 13 Press Conferences to announce a firing or hiring of an AD or a Head Football Coach. Hirings; Pedersen (AD), Callahan, Osborn (AD), Pellini, Eichorst (AD), Riley, Moos (AD). Firings; Solich, Pedersen (AD), Callahan, Pelini, Eichorst, Riley. With a 14th Press Conference on the way soon.

This was brought up on Lincoln sports talk radio, along with Eichorst comment about "I had to evaluate where Iowa is as a program". They yearn for stability, but I'm not sure they will ever see it again. They were two years and two games into the Riley era when Larry The Cable Guy started calling for Eichorst and Riley to be fired. They will give Frost more leeway, but not as much as some may think.

College football is providing the best drama going. the NC ST coach told TN nope too. Can someone tell me why they haven't even talked to Tee Martin? There's a TN homeboy that's paid some dues in coaching that'd say yes to Manning in a heart beat he started at QB and won the NC the year after Manning left. He's young and if they'd be patient with him he isn't going to jump ship anytime soon if at all. Not to mention he'd be a lot cheaper then 46 million over 6 yrs. Oh well my free advice is what it is.
Nebraska would for sure implode if Frost ends up at FSU after the dust settles. I don't think that's going to happen unfortunately. Hell Fisher hasn't gotten off the pot yet to say if he's even leaving there yet. I just think there has been a call between Nebraska and Frost already maybe even Osborne himself and Frost isn't turning him down knowing full well how that'd go over.
