Swiss soccer players with NCAA eligibility?

Just curious. Phil Parker could use a couple backs who can wrap up and take down like these guys from the FIFA World Cup.

Germany busted my heart and my bracket today, failing to make it out of the group stage. I had them going all the way and repeating as champions.

So Mexico won their group and advanced from the group stage despite losing to Sweden by three goals. The shocking result in the South Korea versus Germany game meant that El Tri would advance to the Round of 16. In the postgame press conference, someone asked Chicharito Hernandez what it was like to back their way into the next round of the tournament.

and....

Nap + TIVO = soccer viewing. 90+ minutes...1:30 of action

You just described football and baseball. Maybe the DJ PM game.

Played all sports. From a player perspective soccer bu far has the most action. If I played an early afternoon match I couldnt sleep that night due to adrenaline. One mistake and you can lose. Highly intense. TV of soccer shows most of the field as each position is pivotal. For those used to other sports that zoom in all the ball I can see why the dislike if you dont understand. The other sports are filmed for lazy viewng.

If you really wasnt to evaluate a basketball player you need to see the whole court. Watch the whole court and you will see why Iowa was terrible last year. It does begin at the top on D.

A somewhat predictable response. (I don't get it because I don't understand how to watch the sport). I attended countless soccer games and tourneys when my kid played (I know, it's high school). And we went to second tier (not MLS) pro games as a group. I understand the flow of the game and watch the entire field...it just doesn't do much for me. (the down time in "football" is between plays, in soccer the ball is in play)

I get your point, but the rhythm of each game is quite different. Baseball is gradually losing fans because of it's slow pace and longer games. Football remains king because every play is different (or perhaps more complex), and the possibility of a "home run" is always there. (the violence helps, too) A lot more strategy and gamesmanship in play calling and position by position than soccer. Yes, there are similar individual battles in soccer but they're more subtle. (what exactly does a soccer coach do, anyway?).

Eliminate offsides, stop the flopping and soccer's popularity would grow even faster.

The flopping for sure. Offsides being eliminated would destroy the game.

At the higher level soccer coaches in game...more than one might think but in general not a lot. At the HS level, I was constantly strategizing and managing the game. I could usually see a score coming 30 seconds or minutes before they happen. Mismatches, tiring, setting up an overload. I often put one of my best offensive players in the back for a run through or overload and signal it. Where I"m different is that I teach players to keep their head up and see the whole field. I love playing prima donna players as they generally don't do that.

The World Cup is a bit disappointing this year with key teams missing or first round out.

I am glad the flopping Italy Spartans (MSU poke) didn't make it.

There's a good reason the US isn't any good at soccer and it's because the majority of us don't want to be. It's just a stupid boring game. It's meant for kids to get exercise. It's a cheap cheap game for them to be able to go play all they need is a ball and shoes. But for adult entertainment it's just not entertaining to me. I'm perfectly self aware that the rest of the world has me in the minority on it but I take no shame in it.

Anyone else watching less ESPN due to soccer because you can put me in that camp. Why on earth would I care about some European country playing a South American country in soccer? I just can't pretend to care and watch all the 'highlights' ESPN puts on now. Just get it over with already ugh. Between that and college softball ESPN may as well just be telling us they don't want anyone watching right now.

Soccer and hockey should both eliminate the goalie position and they'd actually be watchable. Yes I'm serious, and yes l understand the rules of both games.

The reason those two sports are so mind-numbingly boring is because scoring is so difficult. There's no balance between difficulty and action of the game. Would anyone watch basketball if there was a guy sitting on the back of the rim swatting every shot away? F no...but basketball still has exciting defense by regular players, and it's not so lopsidedly unfair as to prevent scoring.

Soccer and hockey could do the same thing. Let defenders play defense. You'd obviously have higher scoring games, but it wouldn't be so ridiculously monotonous. How many times in a soccer match do you see the ball go back and forth for ten minutes like a beach ball at a Grateful Dead concert, only to get stuffed and then it's back to crowd beach ball time?

I'd watch the shit out of a soccer match or hockey game that didn't have goalies and scored every minute or two. The defense would be way more urgent without a goaltender to fall back on, the action faster, and scoring would be so much more fun to watch.

For you soccer nerds out there, I will give in and say I like your running clock. Props.

Hockey at least has some physicality to it. Soccer has guys flopping worse than Vlade Divac ever did. I love the violence of hockey and am not nearly as down on it as I am soccer as a sport. That said the NHL has taken a lot of steps to wussy that game up too recently. Hockey isn't even close to my fav sport but I respect the heck out of it as far as the hand eye and skating skill it takes to play it at a high level amazes me. There are some low scoring 1-0 or 2-1 games but even those are less and less now a days in hockey.

I do find the no goalie rule interesting for soccer. Yet I'm not sure at the highest level to what extent that'd even help. They primarily just throw/kick the ball in once it's been out of bounds. They don't usually get a ton of saves like hockey goalies do do they? To me I say put less bodies out there. It's too cluttered up out there take like 2 players off the field for each side and open it up. Maybe even shorten the field by 20 yards too. If they want to grab some on the fence new fans those are some ideas I have anyway...

This thread - I can't even... Don't even know how to respond to these posts. Remove the goalie? Soccer isn't physical? LOL

Yes, just like arena football lets create arena soccer because we have 10 second attention spans! I think baseball is boring AF to watch but I don't think they should put lions on 2nd base or have cars driving in the outfield

You wouldn't have like Nolan Ryan I guess.

Baseball and football are watched because about every kid can throw a ball, walk or occasionally make a catch and dreamed about playing big someday.

Soccer is the hardest main world wide sport to be good at.

No sport is as intense as soccer. There are reasons why there are so many riots about it. Riots in the US are drunk fat fans of other sports.

You should watch Europeans watch baseball or football. Bores them stiff.
