Stuck with Fran, but ...

Due to that Bozo, Barta, we are stuck with an incompetent head coach for years to come. However, there can't possibly be a remotely similar commitment to McCaffery's assistant coaches on the part of the University of Iowa. Barta needs to put on his big boy pants and make Fran fire all of his assistants at year's end and bring in some coaches that are actually capable of coaching above a junior high school level. It is the only "out" available to this program in its pathetic state right now.

Perhaps its a pipedream to think of it, but, Barta could pony up the necessary funds to bring in 1 (or more) top-notch assistant(s) - meaning taking away highly regarded ones from excellent P5 programs, with the understanding that the top selection will then replace Fran in a guaranteed 2 year time frame, when Iowa will buy out our idiot head coach no matter what. Fran cannot possibly remain Iowa's coach more than 2 years, the Iowa fan base for men's basketball will dissolve by then with his product. And by the way, his boys aren't lottery picks capable of turning this dumpster fire around, so their presence or non-presence cannot influence the firing of their father.

Shy of getting God to intervene and get Iowa a new AD who swallows hard and pays the idiotic buyout in full immediately, I can see no other way this mess can get better in the foreseeable future.

Fran is essentially Gary's boss at this point. Well, one of his bosses. Kirk is also his boss.

I would still like to know which Iowa assistants have left for bigger and better things. Billy Taylor left for a DII school. Other than that....why have zero staff members changed in seven years (using the timeframe that I've have season tickets)?

This team reminds me of this kid when they were in the Bootcamp. He couldn't handle it at first but at the end of the Bootcamp. He knocks this DI out. Be patient with this team, they'll knock out all the teams out BTT in the end.

Is this a joke. This isnt a feel good American movie. Ukrainian movies always end with a dead hero.

Wasn't Lickliter's buyout $5 million or so? So, Fran's buyout next year would be $9 million. $5 million back then is like $6 million now (inflation/time value of money) so it'd only be $3 million more, in a sense, to buyout Fran than it was to buyout Lick and that was palatable.

I might be wrong on Lick's buyout, I can't remember but you get my point. I don't want to fire Fran this year and hope it works out but I'm trying to look at it at every angle.

Iowa can afford to buy out Fran...this year or next. They won't. Big difference.

This is my fear. If he doesn't make the Tournament next year, and he probably won't, he should be fired no questions asked. You can't justify keeping him around after missing 3 straight Tournaments including one year that was as bad as this year with no hope in sight.

If Iowa misses the dance next season, I do believe that Fran will be fired. That's just my feeling though. The pressure for change will be too great.

We'll win 19 or 20 games next year, make the NIT. That will be the basis for keeping Fran ANOTHER year. Then we will make the NCAA tournament, get crushed in the 2nd round again. At which time Gutless Gary will give Fran an extension. Then we get to go back to a 3 year tournament free period of time.
It's the Gutless plan. Get used to it. .

This is what's so frustrating. We're not going to make the Tournament next year unless he adds an impact player which he won't because he's too stubborn so why not just do it now instead of waste a season?

Agreed. This will be the Athletic Department, and some of the fan bases logic:

2018-2019: Iowa doesn’t make the dance, but we can’t Fire Fran because if we do we will be taking a grenade to the ever important 2019 recruiting class. So we stick with Fran. The team “improved” throughout the season.

2019-2020: A senior laden Iowa team makes the dance as a 7 seed and either loses 1st round or gets absolutely throttled in the second round. Now we can’t Fire Fran because he just went to the tournament and has signed several recruits in the 2020 class.

It’s a never ending cycle, which is why I was hoping we would cut the chord after this year. Unfortunately, as we well know that isn’t happening with GB around.

He's adding 3 G's to next years team, one who's considered one of the best players to commit to Iowa in the last 30 years and who knows what the roster looks like next season with transfers in or out. You can't definitely say NOTHING is going to change next year or that they won't the tournament, cause you don't know that and either do I.

This^. Exactly this^. And the Champions of mediocrity will lap it up!

CJ was probably a waste of a scholarship and I don't think Connor or Joe are going to help this team defensively much if at all. Fran needs to open up at least one scholarship to get a graduate transfer to help next year's team and make some changes on his staff. The bad thing we all know neither of those will happen.
