Starters for Iowa - SDSU Game per Iowa SI

It won't matter as Cartwright will get starter-like minutes as will Marble and Brommer. Throw Gatens in there and we have a pretty deep rotation.

Also, Gatens is listed as questionable after getting the hard cast removed on Wednesday.

I hope the staff is smart with Gatens' return(I'm sure they will be). There is no need to rush him back. I would feel more comfortable if he sat out the first few games just to give that tendon more time to heal. It's a long season. I know how big of a competitor Matt is so I'm sure he will be buggin the heck out of the staff trying to get on the floor early.

When was the last time that we had a team that was 8 deep without any real falloff?

Payne
Cartwright
May
Basabe
Gatens
McCabe
Cole
Brommer

All can play meaningful minutes without any real loss. Then you have Marble without much drop but he will get better - a lot better. That's your 9 player rotation. We have 2 legit PGs, legit wing players, legit SFs and only lack a true true big man 6'10 or bigger to play the post. I would classify Cole and Brommer as PFs not Cs.

Excellent stuff.

Iowa can go 8-9 legitimately deep. While perhaps all 9 of them aren't All Big Ten players, it's nice to see a team that has some decent talent throughout the first couple subs. This was a mainstay of Mr. Davis's teams... and it will only get better.

I hope people are positive but also realistic, the Hawks are definately improved and deeper, plus I agree with spank that it will get better but this team will hit some bumps along the way this season, the big ten will be brutal, but i think we have our best coaching staff since LUTE! Be patient because this staff is going to bring the Hawkeyes back!!!

Even before Lickliter was fired, I knew this season would be more fun to watch because Iowa would actually have close to a full roster. About halfway through the last season when Tucker left, following the four transfers the previous Spring, our depth was just awful, awful, awful. The starters would build a lead and then they'd sub in Jon Lickliter, Bawinkel and Brandon Cougill and all of a sudden Iowa would be down by 10 points.

Let's slow down just a little bit. I love the optimism, but we're starting 2 guys on Sunday that have never played D-I. It's a long way to climb the hill.....

You can't be serious:eek::confused::eek:. Even before Lickliter was fired you thought this season would be fun to watch? There would be nothing fun about having Lickliter coaching this team.

The starters last season would build a lead?? Interesting.. I thought I had seen it all then I see this post.

Mr. Lickliter,
Please enjoy your time with family before that High School position opens up. :)

Can't wait. I also would like to see Gatens sit for this game. One thing that we can't afford is a lengthy injury from one of our core players. I think May is our most valuable player and thus we have to really hope he remains injury-free (knock wood). We also will need valuable minutes from our bigs this year. Cole/Brommer/Archie may be a 3-headed monster; I look at them as you would see a platoon position in baseball. None of the three will wow you, but when it's all said and done, collectively the three could put together some solid minutes and respectable numbers. Vs. Illinois-Springfield the 3 combined for 33 minutes, 8 boards, and 15 points. Granted, the competition wasn't very good, but I also expect their play to improve over the course of the year even though the competition will also increase. It will be interesting. Go Hawks!

From your list I would go with five, with a wait and see about 2, and a highly questionable final 1. I actually feel better about someone not on your list, Marble, than one on your list.

But we will see.

Wow. That was the most positivity I've seen come from one of your posts. Are you starting to change your opinion or just tired of being a hater?

My original post didn't say anything about top level Big10 or elite talent. I think our roster is what it is and that's a bunch of 3 star players playing in a 4 star world.

What I did mean is that I can see light at the end of the tunnel and we will no longer be running with just a few players that belong on the D1 stage. Bawinkle, Lil Lick and Cougill were not prepared to play minutes and should not have seen significant playing time. Unfortunately we had no depth so even when Iowa did scratch it's way to a lead or keep a game close, those guys would get in the game and we simply couldn't maintain the same level. We would also run out of gas the last 10 minutes of the game. We were bringing a butter knife to an atomic war and stood no chance.

This year the player caliber has improved (compare roster to last years), the style has improved (fun up tempo to slow boring ball), the coaching has improved (Fran and staff v Lick and staff). We will scratch out more wins this year. We are going to be exciting to watch. We are still going to take some thumpings. I doubt we make the NCAAs. I doubt we make the NIT.

Lol, read my post again. I said "more fun" to watch. I survived watching almost every game last season, believe me when I say that more fun to watch is a relative thing, as in "Nearly anything would be more fun to watch than Jon Lickliter guarding Evan Turner."

As for the second teamers giving up leads or contributing directly to losses, I can remember a few off the top of my head. The first game against Purdue at home, both Ohio State games, didn't we even lead Michigan State for a little while or was that two years ago? It's all a painful blur to me now. I think the Minnesota beat downs could be directly attributed to us having a lack of athletic talent, but the lack of depth made things worse because the Gophers decided to wear out Cully Payne because he had absolutely no help.

The point is, you can't win in the Big Ten with one point guard and no front court depth. Fran will need to work on the front court depth the next few years, but at least Iowa has two point guards now.
