RUSTON –*After weeks of questions and anticipation, Louisiana Tech has finally named a starting quarterback.

Tech coach Skip Holtz announced Monday night during his weekly radio show that Cody Sokol will start Saturday’s season opener at Oklahoma.
Sokol, a senior graduate transfer from Iowa, beat out redshirt sophomore Ryan Higgins for the job in a decision that seemed to become a formality in recent days.
“He’s won the job with the way he’s protected it, and the way he’s learned the offense and some of the plays he’s made,†Holtz said.
The former junior college star in Scottsdale, Arizona, has yet to throw a pass at the Division I level but will provide Tech with a steady option under center after experiencing turmoil throughout the 2013 season.
Higgins threw for 1,715 yards with six touchdowns and 13 interceptions in six starts last year as Holtz flip-flopped between Higgins and Scotty Young, who left the team in the spring.
Higgins struggled with turnovers, as evidenced by the 13 picks, but did battle a slew of injuries like a crack in his femur, a dislocated shoulder and a high-ankle sprain.
“It was a hard year for him but that’s why I have such great respect for him,†Holtz said. “I’m glad we have him. I’m glad that he’s made the progress that he has, and I think he’s going to be an outstanding quarterback here.â€
Holtz previously announced last week he would make a decision by Friday or Saturday, but those plans never materialized as neither Sokol nor Higgins did enough to separate themselves.
After taking the weekend to mull things over, Holtz met with Sokol and Higgins during a 4 p.m. team meeting to inform them of the decision.
Ultimately, Holtz wanted a decision in place by Monday so the starter could spend the week taking first-team reps.
When Sokol takes the field Saturday, it will be his first meaningful action since 2011 at Scottsdale Community College. Sokol racked up 6,250 yards and 67 touchdowns during his two seasons before transferring to Iowa.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pounder redshirted in 2012 and competed for the starting job for Iowa last year before being delegated to a third-string role.
Earlier Monday during Holtz’s weekly press conference, he said he wasn’t disappointed that it took so long to make his choice.
“I think you got Ryan who has been in the program, who understands the offense and has been in it,†Holtz said. “You’re trying to evaluate Cody when he’s been in the offense for 15 to 20 days. I think he’s getting better and better every week.
“It’s not that golly, we’re trying to find which is the worst of two evils
