So...any reason.....

The Big Ten won't be as good next year. There are too many seniors and early NBA departures making major contributions.

sorry for that, but those who fail to recognize history are doomed to repeat it (or something like that), point is Iowa should be good next year, like 23 to 25 wins good. However, the Big Ten will be tough again, and getting to that next level will be a challenge

Dunno man....win those 4 games we gave away and we're a game out from 1st.

Think you are jumping the gun. Indiana is seen as a team that will not be happy with anything less than a final four appearance. I would be happy with Iowa just making the NCAA tourney next year.

Woody compared to Zeller? Humm
Marble compared to Oladipo? Humm

What senior is making a difference on a big 10 team? off the top of my head I only think Bergeren and Brus on Wisco along with Embakwe on Minne. Bo Ryan has proven he will find a way to have Wisco in the top 5 next year

Here you go. I had posted this in another thread.

These are the players of note each team definitely loses or potentially loses...definite due to eligibility (D) or possible due to early departure (P).

Michigan - Burke (P) and Hardaway (P)
Indiana - Hulls (D), Watford (D), Oladipo (P) and Zeller (P)
Michigan State - Nix (D)
Ohio State - Thomas (P)
Wisconsin - Evans (D), Bruesewitz (D) and Berggren (D)
Minnesota - Ingram (D), Mbakwe (D) and Williams (D)
Purdue - Byrd (D)
Northwestern - Marcotullio (D) and Hearn (D)
Illinois - Richardson (D), Paul (D) and Griffey (D)
Iowa - May (D)
Nebraska - Didn't check
Penn State - Didn't check

Michigan, Indiana, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois will definitely feel those losses...especially the latter 3. Michigan State, Purdue and Iowa don't lose much and should make strides.

I should clarify the Big Ten is always tough but moving up or getting to the next level is very doable. Even if no one leaves early (some definitely will) Iowa should compete with Ohio State for 4th...with Michigan State, Indiana and Michigan ahead of us. I'll drop Wisconsin in at 6th based on their ongoing success with separation between the top 6 and the bottom 6 IMO.

But have you checked the incoming recruits? Teams are just reloading at this point. The Big Ten is where it is at. #1 conference in the land!

G-zel can be Eminem.

Seriously, my thread's point was to find the performance/talent gaps on Iowa's team and compare them to where they *could* be a year from now. G-zel just needs to quit throwing the ball away at times.

Calling out Gesell? He is light years ahead of Clemmons (basketball IQ, shot and shot selection to name a few areas).

iowa will not not not be a top 10 team next year

you on crack

15-25 probably about right

Haha I don't think Iowa will be a top ten team next year but calling someone out and saying their on crack for picking them in the top 10 when you think they are in the 15th-25th range is stupid. There's such a minimal difference between 10th and 20th in college basketball with how much movement their is in the polls.

Comparing RDM to Oladipo made me laffy. Not even friggin close. None of the comparisons are really that close.

That said, I think Iowa is definitely a Top 25 team next year.

Ohhhh and She-he is light years more athletic than McCabe. We probably don't have a player on the roster as athletic as She-he.

No one next year. May is one of the better all around athletes we've had in some time. Of course he is graduating, so that point is moot.

....Iowa couldn't be next year's Indiana?

(TM will be proud of me, as once again, I over-reach)

Woody in the middle, much improved, becomes Iowa's Zeller
Marble gets his game totally together and becomes Iowa's Oladipo
White improves his game and becomes Iowa's Watford
Clemmons becomes Yogi
JO overcomes mental issues and mimics Hulls
McCabe becomes Iowa's Sheehey.

Finally, the x-factor is Basabe.

I think FM is every bit as good as anyone in the league.

I'm kind of thinking next year, Iowa could be more like LAST year's Indiana team - more like a 4-5 seed in the NCAA Tourney.

I don't see Purdue staying down... Hammons is going to be force to deal with next year.

Now, here's an intelligent response to my "what if...let's talk possibilities" thread. Thank you.

It's just so hard to envision what next year's team could look like. It will all depend on how much everyone improves, and how much impact the newcomers will have.

I just have my doubts that Iowa has enough talent to be the #1 team in the country, but they could still be a very good team.

IIRC, the 1985-86 Iowa team was a #11 seed or so in the tournament, and the next year, you know how good they were. Hit #1 in the country at 18-0, and ultimately were a 2 seed and just missed the Final Four. Of course, that team had a TON of talent. Again, I'm not convinced that Iowa is going to be THAT loaded, but I do like the talent Fran is bringing in, and I'm optimistic that next season will be a good one.

So alot can change in an off-season. On the other hand, I think the 1990-91 Iowa team was a 7 seed and literally had everyone back the next season, and ended up as a 9 seed, so that didn't necessarily translate from one season to the next. But all indications are that next year, Iowa should be a ranked team, at minimum.
