Small and Slow....

KSU has Klein as a dual-threat QB. They are recruiting another just like him. Somebody by the name of Derby! Iowa wanted him to play LB. Let's await the results.

but wisky hasn't really been lights out this year by any means. I think many had them as potential Big winners and ranked, etc. Their essentially third place this year in their division

I was not one of those people. They are above average without Wilson. A talented, dual threat QB makes a huge difference.

Wisky with Wilson = champsionship and some improbable wins
Iowa with Banks= similar deal

As a 25yr. 3A Iowa HS Asst Varsity Coach ..... looking back to '02,'03, etc. would be interesting to see how many of the 85 scholly's were Iowa kids v. how many were walk-ons who became Scholly's and then became players (Bruce Nelsons', etc.) compared to current roster. Seems to be a lot more Iowa HS kids with full rides right out of HS. I think this is due to more exposure early, both to the recruiting process and kids putting themselves out there - makes it harder to find those overlooked 'diamonds in the rough.'

Also with earlier verbal commitments - there is a lot of development that goes on between early June before a HS players' Sr. year and by the time of Feb signing date. This is what happened to Texas - they got all these early commits from the 'Top 25' in Texas before June 15th... those same players weren't necessarily the 'Top 25 in Texas' by the next February - makes recruiting more of a carp shoot than ever.... that means it is even tougher for Iowa

This is very true and it is something I have given some thought to. While there is no sure fire way to completly combat this, I come up with a way I thought could atleast level out some of the peaks and valleys. I mentioned it to Jon, but he did not seem to give it much thought, so I gave up on investigating the idea futher.
As you have stated the world of recruiting has changed and changed a great deal. Adapt or get left behind. Time to think outside the box.

Michigan, historically, is the winningest program in college football, because they have had top tier talent year in and year out. They are putting together another stellar recruiting class this year (and did this last year, too). They will be good in the coming years because of talent (and coaching).

Ohio State has a first year coach (granted, he is a great coach). He's 10-0 because he has talent (and schemes). He didn't recruit Braxton Miller, but Miller is a playmaker, and his talent is winning OSU a lot of games. OSU consistently recruits around top 5 nationally, and they're doing it again.

Guess which two teams will be on top in the BoneG in the coming years. That's right, these two teams. Why? Top flight talent.

You need talent AND coaching. Urban aint 10-0 without Braxton Miller, and a Miller-led OSU team aint 10-0 with Luke Fickell 'wearing the sweater-vest,' so to say. We're below average in both right now. Until Iowa gets back to scoring three or four special teams TDs per year, we'll be a 5-7 to 8-4 program. Alternatively, we could recruit in the top 10, but [not going to happen].

No, you are not. I wish you were in the minority, but you are in the majority of the voting population if you voted for the communist in chief.

1. Surprising that you actually admit he is what he is.

2. Even though I was some what tongue in cheek when I said he's a communist, the only real difference between communism and socilism is socialism controls the individual's life with a smile, while communism frowns with an iron fist as it controls an individual's life.

3. It's sad that we've reached a point in America where its citizens are not just ok, but happy to vote for socialism (anti-God and His laws).

4. It will only get worse until the economic and moral collapse, as the econoic road we are on simply can not sustain itself. We are Greece in a few years. Also, God will judge a country who murders some of its own children and promotes immorality in many ways.

Geez...............sounds depressing. It is what it is. For some good news: everybody have some ice cream, it's Friday!!

no no, obama is a socialist, not communist

Sorry, didn't get this posted the right way the first time............

Wait, I had to read this tripe twice??

EDIT: IMO, all Romney had to do (might move to political board) was assure voters he wouldn't throw them out on to the street. Have a plan.

You might be right, but it's doubtful. This country is too far gone to want anybody in office who won't promise them money or gifts. It's over. Just live well till we go over the cliff. Pray to God and buy gold!

Did you read where I also mentioned that both the coaches were good coaches?

Absolutely, you need talent and coaching, but the greatest coach in the world can only take a team so far. As you eloquently noted, Fickell couldn't do much with tOSU last year, but that's quite the comparison, considering he was interim, probably not qualified, and had suspended players early in the year.

I think Iowa could scrape into the top 25 in recruiting with some regularity. Great facilities, great fan base, and a decent tradition in the past 25 years.

Damn it, you made me spit coffee all over my screen this morning. You're trying to say Hoke, Penisly, Kill and others are on one side of the equation and the every so saintly but ultimately captain coward is on the other side. That the previously mentioned group of three are perhaps way "off base" and only the skirt wearing, gum chewing, note taking captain coward has it right.

Damn, your really are "olddue", me thinks too old dude!

Betcha aren't 30 yet. Your day will come young one, and when it does you will have learned by then not to be so judgemental, hopefully.
