Shimonek & DW

I realize that I'm in the minority, but I do care. I just think it's interesting to see what we could have had for the better or worse. I realize that someone's success or failure doesn't mean they'd do the same thing at Iowa, but still interesting to see how these guys progress. Thanks Josh!

Willies would have made an impact on this Iowa team.

I'm still not convinced Shimonek would play at Iowa and if he did it would have been for 1 year only as opposed to 3 years of Stanley. Everything related to Shimonek is irrelevant anyway as he left because he admitted pro-style offenses were too complex for him to grasp

The spread offenses with guys like Kliff Bro-sbury will usually have wide receivers learn a route tree for only one place on the field. Like wide receiver X, Y, Z, then the running back and tight end/h-back. Guys specialize and get good in their roles. That means Willies is always lined up on the far left of the field, and is the last guy that the right handed quarterback sees when he does his progression, which usually starts with the right side or the slot guy Couttee.

The result is that most of Willies catches are on plays that last longer, routes that go longer. So its not surprising that he has fewer catches for a very high average and several touchdowns. The draw back is when Couttee is injured they have a backup with almost no experience in the play making position that the quarterback is looking at nearly every play.

He passed up the chance at being a home town hero to be just another face in the crowd.
Even with a stud receiver getting hurt for them it doesn't look like they are pulling his RS. He'll inevitably get recruited around too. Unless he really turns into a stud he'll have a tough time seeing the field. And to think he'd have been on the field a ton for us. He'd be learning Vandebergs spot I bet and would have fit in perfectly here. It's too bad.. But as it is we have other young guys learning on the fly. I really hope they start throwing Brandon Smith the ball some.

Yep. Right now there are 7 WR's on Michigan with at least 1 catch and only 1 of them is a Senior and only 1 is a Junior. So I'm not sure where his playing time is coming from on that roster. Must be fun coming back to IC to visit knowing you coulda had an instant impact for your home town team.

Yup well that said maybe he's one of those guys that is just OK going to a big school for free without the pressure of having to perform and be a home town hero. Some guys aren't cut out for that pressure. Some guys like Tim Dwight thrived under it. From what little I've read about the kid he seems really quiet and soft spoken. Not terrible traits by any means but if one were to connect dots to how a person thinks it's not a stretch to think he might not have the fighting go get yours attitude that most WRs seem to have. If your OK with redshirting at Michigan (with a questionable path to playing time) instead of playing right away for your hometown team it just makes me glad in a way he's not here due to that personality trait.

On the flip side of that coin kudos to Michigan for basically recruiting a kid just to keep him away from us... Freaking hate them...

This season has started very well for Tech, even without the vital contributions they clearly needed from DMX. They could return to a bowl game and get coach Ryan Gosling another season in Lubbock.

Additionally, it helps their recruiting composite score to land a 4-star, whether or not he ever sees the field. Perception of good still goes a long ways to convincing kids.

Yup no doubt. I almost thought they did a similar thing with Higdon a couple yrs ago but he's been playing some for them. He might not ever be their starter but he's played and been ok for them.

shimo
24/39 323 4TDs 1 int

DW
0 for 0 0 TDs

TTech is currently ranked 24th
They are now 4-2 (1-2 in conference)
They probably drop from the rankings

Willies problem was understanding what do do when he was on the field. You can't play someone when it's their responsibility to read the defense, the play call, and determine what his route is...and it's constant failure. From what i've heard, he screwed up all the time and that's why they didn't have confidence playing him. It had nothing to do with talent, it was his understanding of the scheme and playbook.

Now, if you want to talk about why Greg Davis was running this style of offense where so much is determined at the line of scrimmage...we can talk. I'm thinking you should be able to simplify it to allow your best talent to play...at least for certain formations trying to get him in man match ups...where the routes are limited.
I think one thing Brian does much better than GD is find match-ups that benefit us. The one thing BF can't do is throw the ball for Nate. Poor kid has missed or left 8 TD's on the field because we can't figure out how far he's throwing the deep ball. The kid is good on short and intermediate routes but the deep ball eludes him for some reason.

I don't know. I think OM is a pretty legit talent. I think his RS is so that he can be kept in the same class as their FR qb McCaffrey. He and OM became really good friends at that national elite camp in Oregon last summer. That's when I felt OM was gonna go to UM.

I agree with this. However, Brian stated that this was in part his fault because they were not (essentially) practicing it enough, so he was categorizing it as timing. Could be true, or could be sticking up for his guy. I think it's true. The closest he's come to hitting the deep guy has been with ISM. He's missed both MVB and NE by a long shot. Stanley's arm is so big that I think he just needs a really fast guy to run under it. So, that sounds like using Matt Quarrels. He's the real burner on the team. Get MQ and ISM running fly routes and see what happens.

Some don't want to live their life in a fishbowl. Better school, better football program comes calling........I get it.

Hard to run under a deep ball that is thrown on a rope.

It is still a timing and touch issue, no matter who is running the routes.

Meanwhile, over on the Nevada and New Mexico boards...
