Shaun Prater BT player of the week

No, but our offense as history tells us, does not execute very well and their timing is off when TOP is dominated by the other team! Our defense gets tired and our offense gets stagnant! You know, when everyone starts calling for KOK's head!!

OK4P, is it you yet again?? I am amazed and impressed by your seemingly unlimited supply of proxy ISP IDs. :D

My Lord guy's, just watch the games again! Michigan, Wisconsin and MSU! MSU game, he got beat for the deep ball down to our 6, then he got beat on slant for TD! Assignment football is also about being in position to make a PLAY, not just a tackle after 8-10 yard gain fellas! The Indiana's and NW's will have Time of Possession all day if he plays that soft!

Prater played lousy during the Michigan game, he was the first one to tell you that. Watch the MSU game again, it was his assignment to give them the slant, it was his assignment to keep everything in front of him, sometimes you can't defend the perfect pass, the one time he got beat in the MSU game. Also MSU was showing 4 and 5 WR sets a lot during that game, so he didn't have safety help over the top, so Prater has to make sure he keeps it in front, even if that means giving up 10 yards on 3rd and 4.

Ease up man, I love it when arm chair quarterbacks like to criticize the play of players when in reality they couldn't even carry their jockstraps.

I forgot Vintage, are scheme requires us to play off inside the 10 yard line and let them AGAIN, run slant route for touchdown! Sorry, I guess I don't understand our BASE Defense Vintage, my bad!!

HappyChef/BlackHawk by any other name....! :p

You have never criticized an Iowa Football player or coach Imported? I bet you had a lot to say after the Wisconsin game! I bet you played a little arm chair QB Imported! What makes you anymore relevant when you criticize? The kettle is not black in your eyes I guess!

Bottomline is we are all passionate and want our Hawks to win! Bottomline is as fans who pay to go to the games, we all have a right to express our opinions in whatever fashion. Sometimes we agree with others opinions, sometimes we don't, sometimes we agree with a playcall, sometimes we don't. But we all have right to call it how WE see it!

Yep, you do have that right. But when you exercise it to criticize the play of the Big Ten defensive player of the week and a scheme that held the #5 team in the country to 6 points, we have the right to laugh at you. Which is exactly what I'm doing right now.

Assuming they have any eligibility left, I nominate Hawkeyescott and 76Hawkeye as our starting corners against Indiana next week so they can show us how to do it right (since our Big Ten POW corner Prater is obviously not doing it right).

Indiana throws the ball a bunch, so you guys should be able to put on a clinic - anyone else feeling co-defensive players of the week?!?!?

How come Hyde was playing up and taking away the slant to his side then? I understand Iowa gives up the short stuff by playing off the receivers but after getting beat on a slant 4 times in a row maybe the CB needs to take about 2 steps up and BUMP the receiver off his route.

Hyde is getting more help from the safeties (rightfully so, for the time being). Prater is out on an island by himself.

Bumping the receiver off his route will lead to getting beat deep...all day long. Prater's role/duty, right now, is the keep his man in front of him, let the LBs take most of the run support and not get beat deep. He's doing a good job.

If you think MSU was the #5 team in the country, then I'm laughing at you! Other than Iowa, Wisconsin and maybe NW, who else had they played to garner that ranking? Michigan? Notre Dame? This was only there 2nd game outside state of Michigan! I guess you didn't criticize the defense when they gave up 59 points in two games either Olive? Hell, even AC criticized the defense!

Where did I say I could play CB better?

All I'm saying is if Prater takes away the slant (and I know he is playing within the system) he doesn't get the tackles he got to win this award.

But he didn't take away the slant and kept the guy in front of him so he did his job that way and won the award so congrats to him.

In a way I guess I'm trying to say by MSU picking on him won the award more than his actual play. They knew that slant was open all day long and took it allowing Prater to stock pile his numbers.

This is a fair assessment. Prater played his assignment very well, and the fact that MSU knew they could pick on him (or anyone playing that kind of assignment) allowed him to rack up tackles.

He would have been taking a huge gamble trying to take away the slant, as he didn't have much help over the top. Now if he gotten beat THEN, this board would be an inferno again.

Well said TM, you nailed it on the head. You can't win with some Iowa fans, very fickle bunch.

I agree, and that is what pisses me off the most about how Iowa plays D. Just once give him some help to take away that slant and maybe MSU wouldn't have tried it so many times.

And yes I know it has been like this for the last 12 years.

You have to remember that at this point, Hyde NEEDS that help over the top. If he didn't, we could play it straight more often. But, I think that we made it quite clear on Saturday that if we execute, those slants aren't going to hurt us that much.

Also, Prater's play seemed to set up his interception. He kept giving them the slant (and stopping the receiver from getting YAC), and then MSU tried a stop and go, and Prater didn't bite on it at all.

Bingo

I'm glad he won. I've seen other people on other boards dogging him and I think they are too harsh

You might have thought they were overrated, but beating Wisconsin was a pretty big deal. Better than any win we had before last weekend.

Since you asked, I didn't think the defense played well against Wisconsin. But I also didn't think that was a good reason to change our entire defensive scheme, which a lot of people on this board were advocating (blitz more! press coverage! nickelbacks!). It turns out we played exactly the same scheme, executed better, and dominated.

But you're right, we did give up some 8-yard slants. We should probably change our whole philosophy on how our corners play. I mean, it worked against Michigan State, but the juggernaut that is the Indiana Hoosiers will probably chew it up!

I remember one time Shada had the same situation happen in a game where he was giving huge cushions and recorded a bunch of tackles, but also gave up a bunch of yards. He got a late interception and got recognized for his play, while the fans were screaming at him all day.

In Prater's defense, he was strong in run support and his guys didn't get a lot of YAC after they recorded the first down in front of him.
