Scott Frost...

I know they have to be "homers" but to see Stanley Jackson crowing on BTN that "Nebraska is really coming on, great team, blah blah" had me shaking my head.

All true, so true. Those kids are taking the field expecting to lose, no how certain victory would appear to be. They're taking on the self fulfilling prophecy of their coach, who can't keep his mouth shut and can't accept blame for anything.

Now the players are starting to flap their gums. It's all sound and fury, signifying nothing. The more they chirp, the more obvious it is that it's false braggadocio, an admission of inadequacy, and weekly defeat.

The first time Frost, Moos, and the players can go through a week and keep their mouths shut will be the week they get that first win. Book it.

People need to keep it real though. This is still in the infancy of his coaching tenure there and he's still putting all the pieces of the puzzle together, which includes most players that he didn't recruit.

I'm not going to jump on the guy and state "he sucks" 6 games into his tenure. That's pretty silly when you think about it objectively. I guess I don't want to be eating crow if he's 10-2 in year 3 and beats Iowa by 27 pts.

I agree. 6 games in KF's career the Iowa program looked like a mess. Hell they looked like a mess for the first season and a half under KF.

Way too early to judge Frost. He's already proven to be a good recruiter even though he came in pretty late in the process last year.

Nebraska will be patient and let him do his thing. Who else could they get? In many ways Frost to Nebraska is what Brian Ferentz is to Iowa. Nebraska needs Frost to be successful because if he is he'll never leave. Iowa needs BF to become a monster OC and then move to HC because like Frost, he'll never leave.

While that is a possible future, in the short run, it's just too much fun goofing on them.

Once again, there's an excellent chance Frost will turn this around. It's just that he (and his boss) didnt help themselves with preseason braggadocio and continuing with Frost acting like a petulant child in post game pressers. On the field, Martinez ability is obvious but for the most part they are a train wreck on defense and undisciplined on both sides of the ball.

Once again, Ferentz 1999-2000 start was brought up. Once again, I don't think Bowlsby was making outlandish comments in the preseason and I don't think Ferentz was throwing players or coaches under the bus or blaming officiating, etc. I don't think Ferentz saw Joe Tiller coming up next on the schedule and calling it a winnable game.

Frost, his boss, and the players have made themselves easy targets for thread abuse. And worse, abuse between the lines. That should be their prime focus right now and it probably is, but they keep leaving themselves open time and again.

Huge difference between Kirk's 1st year her and Frosts's there. In Kirk's first year they knew they would struggle but they all trusted the process. They trusted the coaches and believed in each other. Does anyone think Frost is inspiring anybody at this point? Kids these days need more sugar coating than they did 20 years ago and Frost is throwing them under the bus. I don't think even in a few years that they'll be successful if he can't blame himself and defend his players.

Listen to the way Colin Cole talks about the '99 season to all of our players before the season last year. Do you think any Nebraska players will be doing this in 20 years?

Edit: Sorry I remember that talk differently but still fun to listen!

Nice post. Spot on.

And therein lies the (HUGE) difference. KF is liked because, among other things, he is humble. And he can laugh at himself and even at the team.

A great KF story was at the Cap One Bowl "Signing Lunch". Basically, they pretend to sign the contracts to play in the game (think Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant, except neither KF nor Saban smashed the other's head on a table!). Charles Davis is interviewing the coaches. Saban comes off as...Saban, basically. Taking himself too seriously, not knowing the right times to laugh and joke, etc.

KF, though, was brilliant. Charles Davis asked him, "Boy, after that debacle in Arizona, what did you do to get the team to put that behind you?" KF sort of laughed and then said, "Wished like hell we hadn't gone out there". Absolutely perfect answer. The whole time people were talking LSU speed, with the occasional, "Boy, those Iowa teams are huge, being corn-fed and all!" They basically told KF, "You can't possibly think you'll win!", while KF continually countered with, "We really won't know until we play the game" Half the media types expected him to forfeit the Big Ten co-championship. All he countered with was, "We've definitely had some things go our way". He didn't even HAVE to say the team was using 4th- and 5th-string RBs.

Anyone remember what Saban said in the post-game presser? It's why nothing Frost says is a surprise to me.

He is bringing this all on himself, he's the one who came in talking about playing in the B10 championship game and all in his first season as HC.

At the end of the day he very well could turn it around at Nebraska but until they do I'm going to enjoy every minute of this circus. I hope they become the Rutgers of the B10 West.

Kirk is occasionally a guest on Chicago sports talk station WSCR. He gives insightful answers and has a good sense of humor. He gives a good account of himself.

Steve Alford was not so lucky. WSCR's Dan Bernstein will go on a blistering rant every time his name is brought up. Most of this, of course, was brought on by Alford himself, from Pierre Pierce on down.

for cryin' out loud guys...this obsession with Frost is taking on a clone-like feel. Give it a rest. Ferentz was 1-5 at this point in his tenure at IOWA.

<<Ferentz was 1-5 at this point in his tenure at IOWA>>

And he had made ZERO predictions, let alone "bold" predictions. He wasn't blaming Fry leaving a bare cupboard, or griping about transfers or "tampering". He wasn't "sick" of his players or calling them "whiny".

Other than that, the similarities are mind-boggling :)

The point isn't the similarity or lack there-of... it's the obsession with their coach and program.

To be fair there were publications this summer already ranking Frost ahead of Ferentz....just like the season before when people where ranking PJ Fleck ahead of Ferentz. Every year there's a new one - that's better than little ole Iowa - every year Iowa just keeps winning football games.

Iowa fans are obsessed with Nebraska tho - it's a pretty high level on this board. I count myself as one of them. That said, I don't start any threads rather than just feed into ones that get made :)

Make no mistake, I think Frost is an arrogant piece of work too...along with their fans. I just prefer not to obsess over it. This is the kinda stuff we've been laughing at ISU for doing as long as I can remember.
