Fry, your affinity for Woods is well-documented. And, I don't pretend to know the man, but by all accounts he is a very good man and excellent coach. He has seemed to get the most of his players in every role he has played at Iowa.

That said, other than a two-year stint as TE coach 5 years ago, his entire career as a player and coach has been on the defensive or STs side of the field. Is it really sensible to believe that he should be promoted to OC and play-caller given his resume? There is scant reason to believe that would be successful, other than that he has been a good coach. But, OC at Iowa is challenging from the get go, but I see this suggested course as setting him and Iowa up for failure.

By this logic, why not move Phil Parker to OC? He has an even better track record as a defensive coach.

I get wanting to keep Woods. But, if I were to throw my pixy dust on the situation, I would hire a new and outside offensive staff to come in and install a new offense, not tinker with the existing stinky offense. I would leave the defense and special teams as is. It aint broke, don't fix it. And, name Woods the HC in waiting.

Think it might be better to keep Captain Phil exactly where he is right now

Yeah that wasn't any sort of joint announcement at all that was 100% her. She said she informed BF he wasn't coming back. So that answers some of our questions about how this went down. Come to find out the AD can unilaterally make that call....

To not see BF and KF be a part of any such announcement is telling and the next statement from KF will be waited on by baited breath.

Kirk might not reply

No need, the news is out, and he is probably a bit torn up about it

Although he probably have done it after the season

Maybe pops was helping him. Would it really surprise anyone.
This whole country has many examples of parents setting up their children's success by failure. Either way we won't see Brian standing with a homeless sign on any off ramps and I'm pretty sure he's not heading to the local unemployment office after the season ends either. It is nice to see Beth doesn't wait for the end of the season to evaluate things like Kirk has the last few. Regardless good, bad or ugly a wind of change just blew over Iowa city today!
Reminds me of my beloveded Corps. Lead, follow or get the f**k out of the way!

I think he's going to get hired as soon as he wants to get hired. He's going to have a lot of choices. He was just WAY out of place so he could be our next HC. If I needed an OL coach though, I'd certainly take him. He's a damn good coach.

Hiring a guy who has exactly two years of offensive position coaching, and who has never called an offensive play in his entire career, to be your new P5 OC is less bright than hiring your son to do it. BF had a natural and reasonable progression. His entire career as player and coach was on offense, and before he was elevated he was the run game coordinator for the offense. He was in every offensive meeting and helped create the offensive game plan each week before he was asked to call plays.

The notion that because Woods is not playing Angry Birds during the offensive sets and therefore he has learned how to coach offense and call plays through some sort of football osmosis is a just a bit of a leap of faith, don't ya think?

The main reason I don't want this to happen is I don't want the next man up trying to just build the same mousetrap better. So, we move Woods to OC and keep the rest of the clown car in place running the same offense????? Even if he is better than BF, does that just mean I have KOK again (eventually, after he learns how to call plays)? Nope. I want KF to hire a new offensive staff, let them do their jobs, and do things differently. That is the only way we are going to compete in the New Big 10!!!

Woods is the assistant/associate head coach. Not the OC. For me.

In addition, while toying with the possibility that he could maybe turn into a good/great OC, you are also no taking the chance of downgrading at the ST position he came from. There is a risk there as well. Taking a proven coach in one area, moving said coach, than hoping to fill the vacated area with another successful coach.

But, I get it for coaches that want to progress to a OC or DC. It's a natural progression and they should have a chance as well at some point, so I get it if he would be offered.

This is right where I'm at on it too... And that's just the practical side of it all. To hire Woods for it is as close to making the same mistake they did in hiring BF to begin with just minus the whole nepotism part. I'm not against hiring someone with no OC experience for it normally. I just am at this point now because of what all has transpired. This is a total rebuild gut job and to do that it needs someone from the outside with experience of having called plays and developed QBs.

Not buying it. His offense is the worst in football. Indiana scored 3 TDs against Penn State. Do they have more talent than Iowa? Have none of the 300 teams with higher ranked offenses had injuries?
Related.

Teams that put more/same points up vs Utah State this year since our half-assed win:

- Idaho State
- Air Force
- James Madison
- UConn
- Colorado State (same, 24)
- Fresno State
- San Diego State

That list (every game FYI) should be a fireable offense alone. Gag-worthy.
