Reading Lips

The throw to Powell was into the wind and maybe Rudock didnt put enough juice on it. I have seen rudock throw the ball farther than that before.

It was drizzily wet and somewhat windy so overall rudock did pretty good without much of a running game going against some very good athletes.

Yeah Rudock missed some throws but he had some very good completions also.

If Beathard beats him out and is great then that is fine because we won 8 games with rudock

So it comes back to one of the central debates about KFz's approach.

Do you play to win (go with the guy that has a higher ceiling and better physical talent)... or do you play "not to lose" (defaulting to the guy with more experience as you believe in risk management)

I like Jake and he's a great kid. But his passes are not going to get any stronger. We've seen his ceiling. C.J. is bigger, stronger, more mobile and throws better. If he makes a few mistakes and throws some pics.. so be it. Jake has had his share too.

IMO, JR was the best option this year(from what I saw), so "playing to win" meant using JR. I also don't think we've seen either qbs ceiling.

I hope we play the best overall option next year, whoever it is. Hopefully the competition is strong and intense.

I agree the extra year made Jake a better choice to start the season. QB is a complex position.

But whether KFz is open to change, or stubbornly married to Jake remains to be seen. We certainly know the #1 question going into Spring ball. (along with replacing the Linebackers)

If CJ doesn't increase his accuracy and pocket awareness(it looks like he will improve both based on today) JR will start for the same reasons he started this year.

I actually wouldnt be opposed to a 2 qb start to the season, if the competition is close, until the best option emerges. Its not popular but that way we on the message boards can make our choice, because there is no doubt that the football coaches can't be trusted to make this call. Cue examples of Banks(who wasn't ready)...and Stanzi(which is really the only accurate example, and the change was made)

Come on. JR turned in a heck of a year. I don't want to bash any of the kids, but with the theme of this thread.... It would be nice if receivers could get open, and if they could go up and get a ball. Jakes int should have been a completion or incomplete if the receiver would have gone up to get the ball. Remember the drill.... Catch the ball at the highest point.

The ball was badly underthrown. No way a receiver could make a play on it.

But Powell was open. He also missed CJ FED a couple times wide open. So there were times receivers were open and we did not take advantage.

I believe that right now Rudock gives us the best chance to win as he is a smarter QB and manages the game better. CJ has the better arm and big play opportunity, but with that comes risk. I think we will have a good QB battle over the next few months. I hope the staff plays the best guy next fall. Not the best guy today. And honestly, I don't care who that is. As long as we win.

I also would not count out Shimonek, as he was recruited by Davis for his offense, and will be given a look.

Theyre not running Davis offense.

I'm not trying to bash JR he had his moments this year, he also did under throw the deep ball multiple times this year. Powell was wide open on that play all Jake needed to do was throw the ball as far as he could and Powell runs underneath it. Powell had to stop running ful speed and come back to the ball the LSU corner was sitting under, very tough to do. JR had a solid year, but the deep ball is something that can be improved upon for next year.

Could history repeat itself at Pitt next year?

Its possible, but JR is light years ahead of where JC was. That said, whoever has the most growth/improvement will win the job. As much as it bothers folks, if JCB wants the job he's going to have to be the clearly better qb, all around.

CJ had two turnovers today, one of them just got overturned by replay...which was incorrect by all NFL standards. (Aaron Rodgers last week) Jake got us here, CJ was not that impressive. I have seen a healthy JR run that same bootleg, drop that same pass into KMM on the exact same play. I've watched him stand in and take a blitz up the middle and get drilled to find CJF to win the game for us against NW. Cut JR some slack, he is playing with a bum knee and hasn't been the same since the Wisconsin game.

I see bigger potential in CJ but he hasn't figured it out, or hand the in game experience to minimize his mistakes yet.

I knew there would be several CJ threads after this game. I don't think Jake was 100% today. It will be interesting to see what happens next year

In this day of HIPAA laws, it is very possible we will hear nothing about this. But I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see Rudock have some arthroscopic surgery, maybe on both knees, in the next few weeks.

My hunch is the knee injuries were both worse than we were led to believe.

Just my hunch.

I believe that call on the replay was correct. CJ was hit from the front by the defender's hand, the ball went forward towards the line of scrimmage, meaning something.....CJ's hand....propelled the football forward. Just my opinion, I thought they would overturn it and they did. QB history would dictate that CJ will not get a chance. Maybe I am wrong on that one?;-)

First of all KMM wouldn't say that about a teammate, at least I don't believe so anyway. He should look at his critical turnover, terrible throw, and poor route running and someone might say, I wish it was someone else doing his job.

I was never good at reading lips, so I'll let the experts sort it out.

I think you're right here. He didn't get his legs under him on that long ball, his short passes (a couple to CJF) were off, and he was really really slow when running boots/scrambles. It's obvious he wasn't full strength. (I'd be curious about the distribution of reps during bowl practices)

I wouldn't be surprised to hear of a procedure during the offseason. If that happens, I hope he has time to heal before spring competition. Both players deserve a fair shake.

Yeah, I remember when Stanzi was considered to be the back up to Christensen. How's that work out?

It's not like the backup being a better option NEVER happens. But I remember going to Iowa games and hearing fans calling for Christensen over Tate.

How'd THAT work out?
