Reading Lips

Thats OK I can live with that. I like what both guys bring to the team. But neither are a back like what you see at Wisc. We just need some help there in opinion. If we are going to move forward next year and 10-11 regular season games the offense is going to have to get better. Im just hoping the D will be as good as this year. QB & RB & WR are some places I think we might be able to improve Not likley to get much better at TE or OL

You are right, I would love to have Melvin Gordon back there. Maybe this Smith guy from MO can make an impact right away. We need a difference maker on offense, not just steady Eddies.

For Iowa to break thru , they need more points on offense. For that to happen, KF has to put the best talent on the field...I think he knows that 2014 could be a break thru year, and he will do what he needs to get it done..including a QB competition, with both guys sharing snaps thru the first couple of games until someone emerges, like Conner Cook did at MSU.

Most of us, including myself, would say that JVB had a horrific Senior season, and that for the most part Jake had a decent Sophomore season. JR only threw for 134 more yards than JVB did in 2012. He did, however throw for 11 more TDs but had 5 more interceptions.
To put it into perspective, Stanzi threw for 700 more yards, had 7 more touchdowns, and 7 less interceptions his Senior year than JR.
The defense and running game carried this team. In order to take a step forward, we need more production out of the QB position. I don't care who it is, we just need more production.

I knew there would be several CJ threads after this game. I don't think Jake was 100% today. It will be interesting to see what happens next year
Iowa needs the best offensive weapon at QB next season, because Iowa's D won't be dominant next season. A game manager won't cut it.

I don't think there's an issue with Beathard's ability to read defenses and his knowledge of Iowa's playbook. I think he's, right now, at least equal to Rudock in ability. Not sure I could convince KF, though.

Good receivers would help too. When I compare the QBs over the past few seasons, on thing stands out, Stanzi had JVB had great receivers. Once they left, JVB was a train wreck, and JR was very average.

Yeah. Manley is a good second option but they don't have a star receiver. Smith and Hillyer have been inconsistent an Powell has been as well. I'm hoping Smith make strides and that some of the redshirt freshman can break through.

Hopefully Daniels makes enough improvement to be the top back. Weisman, Bullock, and Canzeri are good but all have their limitations.

As for QB, It should be an interesting battle and hopefully makes both QBs better.

Good to great passers with 'dynamic' passing offenses bring the good to great receivers. They may come for Beathard. Doubt if they come for KF's pass offense, though.

I remember going to Iowa games and hearing fans calling for Banks over McCann.

HOW DID THAT WORK OUT?

You want the whole story or just the 2002 part where Banks leads the team to an 11-2 record and was a late season candidate for Heisman. The part that you really don't want to hear is in 2001, McCann going 7-5 with 2028 passing yards, 16 TD's, with 11 interceptions (which is a bit high) Sounds like a guy you would pull for the new guy. Yes, in 2002 Banks led the most productive offense in the Ferentz era with 484 points (13 games) , but under McCann in 2001 the offense was the third most productive at 391 points (12 games).

SO TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION, IT TURNED OUT WELL FOR BOTH OF THEM.

Had Banks started in 2001 it would have been over a quarterback having a good deal of success, without the benefit of learning Iowa's system, and without the benefit of having the game plan geared with his capabilities in mind. But of course it was obvious in 2001 how well Banks would do the next year.

Thats right DJL. Good recivers make a huge difference. While I do think our WR will be better I dont see anything that would lead me to belive they will be a lot better. Kenndy will be working out from the mess Soup left for another year or so.

It's also important to remember that Iowa upgraded at multiple positions between 2001 and 2002.

Instead of Ladell Betts and Aaron Greving, we had Russell and Lewis. We also added Mo Brown to the mix, and he was probably the most physically gifted wideout we've ever had. And even up front, you had Robert Gallery with a year under his belt as opposed to being a first-year starter.

Bottom line, it wasn't just under center where Iowa improved in 2002.

In my opinion, it is always difficult for fans to opine on playing time in football. CJB looked pretty good when he got into the game. He has a stronger arm than Rudock.

As a whole, I think Rudock displayed better pocket presence over the course of the season (but not necessarily in the Outback Bowl). Is that a result of lack of playing time for CJB? I don't know, maybe.

The trouble with opining as to playing time is that we have such a small fraction of the information that the coaches do on that particular subject.

What if CJB quite literally only knows 6 offensive plays? What if he throws an interception every third pass in practice? What if he is known to make bad reads regularly?

This is why I am hesitant to opine as to relatively playing time, but to each his own.

I do hope it is an open and competitive QB position heading into the spring, though.

I believe that call on the replay was correct. CJ was hit from the front by the defender's hand, the ball went forward towards the line of scrimmage, meaning something.....CJ's hand....propelled the football forward. Just my opinion, I thought they would overturn it and they did. QB history would dictate that CJ will not get a chance. Maybe I am wrong on that one?;-)

I'm glad it was overturned, but as a Bears fan and watching all most the identical call going the opposite way makes me think it probably was a turnover. With JR injury history already growing I think CJ is going to get his chance to play, if not start in the fall. I respect Eddie P's opinion greatly since he has played at the highest level, and if he says he has it in him he most likely does.

Remember when everyone wanted Vandy over Stanzi in '09? That worked out great, too.

At least Banks did get playing time and did well in most of his opportunities. People had a legitimate beef there. But Christensen/Beathard? Yesterday was the first time CJB looked better than bad all season. He'd shown very little to suggest he'd be an upgrade over Rudock, just like Vandy and Christensen.

Everyone? Really?
