Rating Iowa's Remaining Basketball Schedule

There is no way that Penn State game was the low point of Alfords tenure at Iowa. It is the Northwestern State game and it is not even close. Brunner and Horner's senior year, Big Ten Tournament champs, ranked, finished 2nd in the reg season, and lost on a prayer in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to a team that they had dominated all game until the end.

After the Penn State game Alford went on to coach quite a few more seasons at Iowa, after the Northwestern State game 1 season.

Thanks for the memories, Pmchawk.....

:D

anytime. I remember wanting Alford gone prior to that year because I felt with who we had returning any coach could win. ;)

You mentioning the PSU loss as being a low point of the Alford era reminded me of one worse. At Northwestern the day before PP got kicked off the team for good.

That was Michael Jenkins' career shot.

It was so so so so bad. Clanked around the rim 4 times before falling.

Correct me if i am wrong but didn't the hawks have a 20 plus lead with less then two minuets left?

Then again lets not dwell on the worse Hawkeye memories. Hopefully this team will start the trend of great memories this year! The win over Whisky on the road means little it they can't find at least 5 wins at the end of this season.

AZMess was talking about the Northwestern game, not the Northwestern State game.

The NWST game was one of the worst losses, emotionally, ever.
The NW loss was one of those - how hell did that just happen type of deals.

The NW game was Jenkins from the corner, as Jeff Horner did not get out on the baseline to guard it. He completely lost Jenkins, who hit the baseline three to beat Iowa. It was in OT, as well.

Iowa was up 12 points with 3 and half minutes to go in regulation...

So blkngldFRO wasn't actually THAT far off. Iowa did have a huge lead late. Yes, overstated by the points, but Iowa was, in fact, up huge late. NW started hacking Iowa and crawled back into it. PP built a house with missed FTs. Also, PP had about 400 turnovers in the game - a huge one at the end of OT with Iowa up 2 and the ball. Alford was so adament that they stop Vuckisic that they left Jenkins wide open. I can still see Jeff spinning around watching the pass go to Jenkins in the corner.

Also, later that fall, NW did it again to Iowa in Evanston, that time it was on the football field. Up 13 w/ 2 minutes to go.

Stoppppppppppppppppppppp the bad memories.

Ohhhh... I just Googled the games... here you go...

Dang.

Northwestern State was the worst for me.....

I stared at the TV with profound disbelief and have remained in a state of shock evermore.....

That didn't really shock me because as soon as the lead started to slip, everyone knew that the Hawks weren't going to hang on. Along with the fact that as Jon pointed out, we had already reached the point when I lost belief in Alford as a coach years earlier. For me it was that season with Recker/Evans and being in the top 10, until imploding after Christmas break.

Without the core of Iowa guys... Brunner, Haluska and Horner...Alford would have been run out of town long before he finally left.

There was a feeling of impending doom in the first half when we blew the first 17 point lead againt NW State.....

:)

Hey Jon---you must have a fan in Zach Johnson. It was reported on the B&B Show (1600AM--KGYM) that he retweeted your analysis of the remaining scheduled. They mentioned Hawkeyenation.com on the air too.

i stare at that big afro kid shooting hail mary shot in that last few seconds and ball swishing thru net , i felt so bad for the seniors.

Teams above and below us..

Three teams below...difference of one win.
Minnesota has the same number of wins...3
Three teams above us with four wins.

So there are 7 B1G teams, and there are two games separating the above from the below and two teams where 1 game separates them from being in the bottom or in the middle of the B1G.

Of course, things will begin to open up I assume in the next week or so?

A good preseason would have helped the Hawks greatly.

I was in Las Vegas watching the game, sitting next to a Illinois fan who was also losing. We were the ONLY two in a madhouse of fans who were not cheering for NW State. When NW State won, the place was complete bedlam and I of course was stunned and very angry that Alford blew it again.

Funny, he continues to blow big games but his hair is perfect.

In reality, with the 3-point shot and the clock shot, if a team gets hot they can close a gap of 15 points fairly quickly. The fact that a team is up by 15 to 17 points and the other team catches up is a regular occurrence. Hit 20 points and it begins to get more difficult.

Before the 3-point shot and shot clock, if a team was up by 15 it was almost impossible to catch up because teams would go into a stall and slow the game down and hold the ball as long as possible waiting for the other team to foul.

The 3-point shot and shot clock improved college ball immensely.

This thread is turning into a Hawkeye basketball house of horrors.

Thursday cannot come soon enough.
