Rate the better year at QB: Stanzi as a Senior / JVB as a Junior?

if you are comparing those yrs i have to give it slightly to jvb because his supposrting cast wasnt as good all around.

jvb has more talent and stanzi seems to be the better leader. remember it was jvb's 1st season at the helm and 3rd for stanzi. that is quite a lot of difference.

the tell tale sign will be where jvb will be drafted. my money is he will be drafted higher than stanzi as he has a better upside. not sure either will ever start but being a 2nd or 3rd string qb isnt a bad gig...make 350,000+ (not sure the minimum think it might be higher than that) and never get hit...i'd take that job if i could. ask seneca wallace how cushy it is if you can stick for as long as he has.

With the moronic rating of Phil Steele on the top four QB's returning in the B10...the criticisms of JVB have resurfaced. I would say, for a number of reasons, JVB's junior year was better than Stanzi's senior season.

1) Stanzi played with a much more experienced team.
2) The 2010 defense was light years ahead of the 2011 version.
3) The 2010 offensive line was better.
4) More depth at receiver in 2010...

How is it people criticize a less experienced QB to this extent, when Stanzi, a three year starter, was terrible at NW, Minn, second half of OSU, second half of Missouri. Not one game winning drive...and in many of the losses...he just needed a few first downs to seal a victory.

JVB had a very good season on an team that wasn't nearly as experienced as the 2010 team.

To counter:

1) JVB had an experienced RB in Coker
2) JVB had an "intact" OL most of the season
3) Neither JVB or Stanzi played defense, so how "defense" figures into the discussion is mystifying to me

That said, I'm not sure a comparison is even necessary. Stanzi had a fine career. JVB, thus far, has little to be "ashamed" of. He's done the best he can with what he has available, as did Stanzi.

I have my personal "views" on the shortcomings of both QBs. But they are dimmed by the positives they both exhibit(ed).

Jr. JVB and Sr. RS both went 7-5. And Sr. RS had a WAY better defense.

I love both of them. But people around here are just blind when it comes to JVB.

The defense has nothing to do with the performance of either QB.

Stanzi had a great career at Iowa. JVB has done fine. Hopefully, the TEAM can put things together this year. However it plays out, I'm positive JVB will leave it all on the field, whether the "team" wins or not.

JVB's supporting cast on offense wasn't that bad. The one big difference is the TE position. But I would say that Vandenberg may have had the better receiving corps.

Ill take Stanzi anyday over Vandenberg

While I don't agree with JVB being "better", and I probably WOULD take Stanzi, I would hardly say it's an easy choice. For any faults he has shown, JVB is still an excellent QB. Had he and Stanzi come in at the same time, it's hard to say, IMO, who would have been the starter.

Stanzi had the benefit of replacing the disappointing Jake Christensen. JVB had to follow the QB who "rescued" the Hawks from what, 6 games into the season, was shaping up to look like a pretty grim season in 2008, then led the Hawks during a magical run in 2009 which was derailed by the injury to Stanzi.

The other "cloud" on it is where each Stanzi and JVB "started" their Iowa careers.

Stanzi was behind JC, PLUS, was viewed as the guy who be nothing more than a backup to "heir apparent" Arvell Nelson. JVB, on the other hand, came in with the mantle as "the" stud QB for Iowa high school QBs in his class. So, from that standpoint, JVB has had some pretty high expectations to meet from the get-go.

This is not true. Stanzi had many more short fields to work with. 2008 thru 2010 defenses created a lot of turnovers and 2008 and 2009 defenses were very good on third down, creating shorter fields. It is easy to say defenses don't impact the offense, but special teams and defense usually have a direct impact on offenses due to field position.

When you start using wins to measure a QB, of course the defense matters.

2011 Hawkeyes:
358 pts
310 allowed

2010 Hawkeyes:
376 pts
190 allowed

2009 Hawkeyes:
301 pts
200 allowed

The offense didn't vary all that much in those years. JVB's junior year outscored RS's junior year by 57 points. The defense had a gigantic dropoff in 2011.

Of course defenses "impact" the offense, but they do NOT affect whether or not a QB can lead the team successfully.

I know this may come as a shock, but I will take Stanzi every day of the week. He was a true leader of the team, and even when he made a bad play, or had a bad quarter he didn't let it faze him. JVB hasn't proved he can play well on the road, and if he has a bad play it seems to affect him the rest of the game. JVB didn't impress me at all last season. Stanzi was a 4th round draft pick, and at this point I would be very surprised if JVB is even drafted.

Joke's on you, then, because I don't measure Stanzi vs. JVB by wins. And as I said elsewhere, I think it's dubious to "compare" "specified" years, i.e., one's junior season vs. the other's senior season, or using the defenses as part of the argument.

Stanzi had a great career. JVB has been solid thus far. It becomes personal preference.

Personally, I would take Stanzi with almost any QB in the Hayden & Kirk eras. I would, of course, put Chuck Long at the top of the list, but after that, Stanzi has been on the same level as any of the other QBs during that time.

But it's pretty hard to say you would NOT take a Hartlieb, Vlasic or Banks. And for all the grief he got, Nate Chandler certainly didn't embarrass himself. Matt Rodgers and Matt Sherman certainly had good careers. So when people start "comparing" seasons individual seasons, it's tough to be totally objective.

I dont know who you are sir, but you are doin a hell of a job over here.....:D

Come on guys, at least a couple of people get it. Defense matters in a huge way. Do you think in 2009, the Orange Bowl year, that if we didn't have that defense, Stanzi wouldn't have been ridden out of town. He kept UNI in it, he kept Ark. State in it, he single handedly kept Indiana in it, Michigan pick six, Arizona pick six, GT pick six...he threw 15 interceptions, but because he had a great defense that bailed him out time and time again, all everyone remembers is "love it or leave it, USA all the way.". That defense was top 5 in the country.

And he had a much better cast of receivers...2010, Moaki, DJK, McNutt...add the year before Brodell (sorry, meant Terry Stross :) and Brandon Myers...JVB had McNutt sure, but no Myers or Moaki or anyone even approaching DJK level on the other side.

When you really look at the QB's, the measuring stick is pretty damn close over the past few years...yet everyone remembers Stanzi as the leader, the winner. Well, if he had had last year's defense those years...he'd be a big time loser.
