Questions You Would Ask At a Presser

Since the Iowa media is afraid to ask the tough questions, let's list them here. Maybe one of the Press guys on this site will nut up and ask a question.

Let's not ask questions that you know FKF would not answer. But legit questions.

My question would be: "Why did you decide to let the clock run out at the end of the 1st half up by 2 at mid field with the wind at your back?"

The questions that KF will not answer ARE LEGITIMATE questions, that's the problem.

Three issues I had with the game.

1) Why did you take the ball after winning the toss with the wind.
2) Not kicking the PAT and instead going for 2.

!! 3) Going up against Purdue's back-up QB who you knew may have been banged up and not 100%, why didn't you bring consistent pressure to get hits on him and in his head. Why did you let him get and stay comfortable in the pocket. In addition, you knew you had the emergency QB (Actually WR) listed as the back-up for that game and had yet to throw a pass in college. You knew Purdue's QB was banged up because you even went as far as to get high school tape on the emergency QB. Why no pressure or legal hits on the QB?

Simply put, I would ask WTF, Kirk? Drop the mic and wait for a response.....probably get a blank stare, or a smirk, chewing his gum

formulate questions and wording questions over and over... and usually when that happens the answers you get simply baffle and frustrate.

If possible, I would ask that the OC and DC coordinators be available to answer questions and I would ask them what tendencies/weaknesses they had noticed on tape and how they game planned to exploit those weaknesses. And as they were answering, I would look at their facial expressions and whether they were looking at the HC for his approval.

I think 95% of the dysfunction present on the staff and team is due to KF alone and his management shortcomings and nothing will convince me otherwise.

I understand that we're not going to hear KF talk about the next opponent in any detail, other than to highlight what has been working for them thus far. If you asked him what he had seen on tape that he thinks can be exploited and how they plan to do it, he's not going to answer that question. But if you asked him the same question about the prior week's opponent, what would stop him from spelling it out for everyone so they had an idea of what our game plan was designed to exploit?

Look, football is not rocket science and you don't need to be a PhD to understand the basic fundamentals of preparation. You look at the opponent's formations, how they execute from those formations, their strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies when confronted with certain situations. So what does the coaching staff do? In a nutshell, they structure their plan to exploit the opponent's weaknesses, try to avoid playing into their strengths, and try to learn their tendencies. And on the flip side, they recognize where they need to work to address their own weaknesses, they reinforce their strengths, and decide how to do a better job of decoying or mixing up their own tendencies.

Why can't Coach Ferentz give us a taste of the preparation that went into the previous week's game? Why can't he give us some insight into what they are trying to do? Look, none of that is going to be a revelation to the opposing coaching staff - they know what Iowa is trying to do already - so what's the harm in explaining it in a coherent way? It would sure give me a boost of confidence if I heard something along those lines, then I would be more willing to agree that it is just a matter of execution. But the way it stands now, I'm uncertain they have done the proper preparation, thus our questions regarding the offensive performance to date are justified.

Note: I wrote this comment in September 2014, it still applies. (sigh)

Mo, he would claim the 5th by using coach speak all day long. He's better at not answering questions than he is with football strategy.

But I would ask: Since you don't have any answers to explain what has happened to your team the last two weeks that caused them to be listless, do you know who does? Could you please ask them?

Obviously, you guys have not read The Gazette or Hawk Central. They were very tough on the coaches and basically addressed all of the questions you wish they would ask. Playing "gotcha" in a post game press conference when emotions are high and NO coach has had time to really analyze what happened, would be unprofessional at best. I am not defending the coaches here, just commenting on your lack of ability to collect information when its readily available. Guess it did not fit your agenda.

We’ll see tomorrow I guess. My guess is a bunch of softballs lobbed in.

My legitimate question about the back-up QB and emergency QB rose to me during the game. When the emergency QB came in for a couple snaps and they stated that Iowa went out and got HS game tape on him, I wondered why haven't they been bringing the pressure on the QB that may not be able to take many hits.

Coach, you showed success in passing on first down over half the time against a very good defense in Ohio State but the last two games have returned to running on first down into an 8 and a 9 man loaded box with no success — which was what happened in the games prior to Ohio State as well with no or limited success:

so what led you to think that returning to a game plan that hasn’t worked against lesser opponents would work against Wisconsin and Purdue?

Questions:

1. In the OSU game, you guys broke tendency on first down and passed around 75% of the time on first down with astounding success. What did Wisky and PU show you in film to make you revert back to 75% runs on first down?

2. How much of "lack of execution" is on players and their skill level/attitude and how much is on coaches and their preparation/game planning?

3. Why is Josh Jackson, a Thorpe finalist, and one of the most dynamic CBs in college football, relegated to only one side of the field so that the opposition can attack the other side of the field with their top WR? It wasn't until PU scored 2 TDs in 3 mins that you made the change to swap Jackson...why?

4. With one game left, you are ranked at or near the bottom in virtually every meaningful offensive statistic....Can any of that be attributed to Brian's abilities as an OC in the B1G?

5. Nearly 75% of your audibles are to the short side of the field. When you have a player of Akrum's ability to make people miss in space, why would you limit his space by constantly running him to the short side instead of going to the "field" side to give him room to maneuver?

6. Out of 105 scholarship players, how can there not be one player that can effectively field a punt? How much of that is attributed to your special teams coaching vs the skill level of the players on scholarship?

7. Can you explain how a program that is a self-described developmental program, be worse in November than they were in September? How much of that is a lack of coaching and game planning versus the players' inability or unwillingness to improve?

Coach, your answers to a lot of these questions talk about player execution or lack thereof that has led to these losses,

but running into 8-9 man boxes constantly and especially on first down — with no success — would be a lack of coachjng execution,

have you and your coaching staff been out-coached the last two weeks especially in context of man-handling an Ohio State team.

Why haven’t you used Akrum in the slot and get him in space like you said you were going to do — especially when every team but Ohio State has tried to put bodies into the line of scrimmage so that Akrum can’t find space between the tackles?

They took a sack on 1st down when they were at their own 38 so they faced 2nd and 18. At this point there was about a minute to go in the 2nd Qtr. There are good coaches that would still try to move the ball at that point. There are also some good coaches that would probably say lets just get it to halftime. Neither is really wrong and the decision is really up to personal preference/how you feel the game is going at that point.

He wouldn't answer any of those questions, guys. My two would be:

1) Mexican food with an Irish flair is one of my favorite things to eat. So that said, what is your favorite menu item at Carlos O'Kelly's?

2) With so much variety of delicious custard choices at Culver's, do you have a personal favorite or do you play it by ear depending on the Flavor of the Day?
