Correction: 4 year bowl ban
Penn State hit with $60 million fine, 4-year bowl ban, wins dating to 1998 - ESPN
The NCAA has hit Penn State with a $60 million sanction, a four-year football postseason ban and a vacation of all wins dating to 1998, the organization announced Monday morning in a news release.
"These funds must be paid into an endowment for external programs preventing child sexual abuse or assisting victims and may not be used to fund such programs at the university," the statement said.
The career record of former head football coach Joe Paterno will reflect these vacated records," the statement continued.
Penn State must also reduce 10 initial and 20 total scholarships each year for a four-year period, the release said.
My Thoughts
Penn State's endowment is $1.8 billion dollars. While $60 million is pocket change for them, I think it sends a message. What I found interesting though is the stipulation that these funds must go to external programs for preventing child sexual abuse or assisting victims. I look at Sandusky and the 2nd Mile organization he was involved with and there is a sick irony that other organizations out there exist with this type of behavior and now Penn St will be paying out $60 million to potentially further that.
Scholarships + 4 year bowl ban basically cripples any efforts at recruiting Penn State makes.
I think the biggest thing is vacating all records from 1998 forward. That kills Joe Pa's legacy, it kills the one thing that these sick bastards were trying to protect all these years. All the winning and championships they were protecting, they're gone now. So I think that is good.
Still can't help but feel like it's not enough though.
