Pro Football Focus Ranks Our O-line No. 1

The last two weeks it's been a top 20 unit maybe. Before that, eeh, not so much.

Even in the losses I really haven't had a big issue with the run blocking. Like I stated before, i am not an o-line expert I will fully acknowledge I do not know what I am looking at or what i am looking for.

#1 seems ridiculous but I'd bet the line looks a whole lot better with a the film review that gives back the 2 75 yard runs by Daniels where no penalty actually occurred.

Run blocking was obviously pretty bad in the NDSU game with Welsh and Daniels out (based on the 1.4 ypc or whatever it was). Other than that I think it's been pretty decent and improving.

Would that be your opinion if Daniels 62 yd. run wasn't called back? Technically, that was a hold on Kittle, but i have seen a lot worse not get called. i am talking blatant, obvious stuff.

I'm guessing there are quite a few sacks that are accounted to RB/TE that most of us joe schmos blame the 5OL just because it is a sack.

5 guys can only block 5 guys. And if defense comes heavy on one side 2 OL can still only block 2 guys even if 3 are attacking. That means TE or RB or QB execution.

Still. The feel of the offense momentum in these games seems to belie the "facts"

That would have brought the average up to 3.8 ypc so that's still pretty mediocre. It probably would have won us the game though. We only had 25 carries against NDSU. That never would have happened with Welsh and Daniels in there. Also, Wadley only had 4 carries for 20 yards 5 ypc. We should have given him more carries that game.

That is more of a GD problem, than a o-line problem. I am not saying everything is perfect with this o-line....All I am saying is the run game is not the issue.

I am quite confident we don't lose that game or NW with the line we've had the last 2 weeks.

Remember who Iowa has played. The next 5 games will be telling. Media typically works under the gun on time and articles written by people who haven't really studied the topic. Been there myself. Hawks might rank 3 or 4 in Big Ten by end of year.

These lineman play so hard, and all too often that goes unrecognized. It is good to see them getting the respect they deserve for what they do for this team.

Keeping with the tone of the quoted that yards per carry and number of carries were down for Iowa against NDSU, that was actually more of a perennial Phil Parker problem, a defensive problem, than an o-line problem because time of possession was, if I remember correctly, NDSU-37 Iowa-23.

I'd say a fair amount of those sacks are coverage sacks and bad protection calls. Not too many sacks where the guy is just whipped and CJ doesn't have 3 seconds to throw.
This is right, not to mention CJ having no pocket presence at times at stepping right into the pressure.

Except AT LEAST 3 of the 6 that NwU racked up (yes, I just typed 6 sacks and NwU ) where Croston was just abused. That doesn't count the QB hurries, one of which came from the left side (again), leading to CJ running scared and throwing the game-ending oskie.
Watch it again. Croston keeps his body between the defender and the QB, but CJ steps 'into' the pressure. Aaron Rodgers would just calmly step 'away' from it and complete a pass. Watch how much push the DE's get in the NFL. Last play of the game? Um, CJ had all kinds of time, stared at ONE receiver (like usual) and once again stepped 'into' the defender. And LOOKY, he has his checkdown (there was still PLENTY of time left in the game) Mitchell WIDE OPEN for a nice 10 yd. gain and he would have got out of bounce. It's the same problems he has had which kept him from beating out Rudock. CAN'T READ COVERAGE AND 'SLOW' THROUGH PROGRESSIONS!!!

By stepping into the pressure, you mean taking a hit from the blindside in the pocket.

I'll give you that there are some that are on him for taking too long and not having that mental clock, though.

Go back and watch. Only a couple times all year has he takin a 'hit' from the blind side. Like I have said and the tape (facts) support me....he steps 'into' pressure instead of 'away' from it. If the OT has his body between the defender and you, he is doing his job and like I said, watch the 'pros' and how 'they' (QB's) react to it......
