Pro Football Focus Ranks Our O-line No. 1

This is a very interesting, short synopsis of Iowa's O line. Melrose, the summary is through seven games. Hopefully, you were being sarcastic? I don't know a lot about PFF, but in general would trust their judgement. I am pretty nervous about the injuries going into the W game; guess we will find out about depth in a hurry.

We are currently ranked 101st in sacks allowed. That doesn't seem worthy of a #1 ranking. We were ranked 31st in 2014 and 12th in 2013 in sacks allowed. Of course we had an NFL 1st rounder at left tackle those years.

I'd say a fair amount of those sacks are coverage sacks and bad protection calls. Not too many sacks where the guy is just whipped and CJ doesn't have 3 seconds to throw.

There have been a lot blindside sacks from the left side. Those are the ones that must be a priority to eliminate. I think we will get better and have improved with the changes on the OL..

Except AT LEAST 3 of the 6 that NwU racked up (yes, I just typed 6 sacks and NwU ) where Croston was just abused. That doesn't count the QB hurries, one of which came from the left side (again), leading to CJ running scared and throwing the game-ending oskie.

The article doesn't give any stats other than Welsh as the 17th highest rated guard and Ike Boettger as the 23rd graded tackle.

If somebody actually looked at stats like sacks allowed, rushing yards, penalties, etc. Iowa wouldn't be in the top 10.

Oh well... at least it's good publicity and probably speaks more to the reputation that Iowa and Kirk have of producing terrific lines than it does their true performance.

They grade the players based on the film. it isn't about opinion or reputation at all.

I'm talking about the line as a unit.

You can't tell me that having the 17th guard and the 23rd tackle is the best combination of any line in the country and justifies a #1 rating as an entire unit.

Again, there's no stats about sacks allowed, rushing yards, things like that in the article at least not that I saw at first glance.

This implies that at least 2 of the OLmen receive high rankings at their individual positions. I'm sure the unit performance ranking would be much lower.

This is pretty typical of derKirkFer teams ... some good to really good players that get offset by some average to below average players - see King vs Mabin / Snyder. The balance, this season, tips toward the latter type of player, not to mention, they lack so many of the intangibles that are crucial to driving success under derKirkFer's strategy and style - toughness, cohesiveness, anticipation and awareness.

I am not an o-line expert I am just Joe Schmo fan, but Iowa's run blocking especially the last 2 weeks have been a thing of beauty. You can see how Iowa has applied pin and pull concepts to their run game. Just google 'pin and pull' or watch some youtube videos and you can see how outside zone runs are so much more effective now.

Welsh isn't Marshal Yanda or David DeCastro, but that dude is going to play in the league a long time.

The last two weeks it's been a top 20 unit maybe. Before that, eeh, not so much.
