Should Connor congratulate Joe Smoldt or should he & his bro continue bitching about it on twitter?

Watched a couple of the Smoldt kid's games in the state tournament. He's a good player, but not state POY good. Sure, he can score 30 against crappy 1A schools, but was really exposed when he had 5 turnovers in the first quarter of the championship game and didn't make a shot until the 3rd quarter when that game was out of reach.

He really turned me off when he was crying and whining about every call that went against them or when he missed a shot and a foul wasn't called. My wife even commented that he whines about the refs as much as Cyclone fans. Not saying Patrick's twitter stuff is OK or not, because I really don't care, but I couldn't believe they picked Smoldt over Connor or some other player.

It was a slight against his brother - poor sport sure and he apologized but poor sport or not, he doesn't like losing - his brother doesn't like losing... their dad's not a loser, either are they. Personally I like the mentality. I think most thought Connor was going to be Mr. IA BB and it kind of came out of left field that he wasn't right?

This shouldn't even be a topic. This is relatively mild compared to other tweets I've seen coming from teenagers. It looks like a lesson learned for the McCaffery brothers and I found the apology to be classy, not all teenagers are capable of that.

It looks like he actually wrote it as well and it wasn't some canned BS apology - i am sure it was a learning and teaching moment. I think these kids are gonna be ultra competitive.

I'd still like to have my earlier question answered. Where was the outcry when everyone on this site was bashing Eno Benjamin? Was he not just a high school kid spouting off on twitter also?

This isn't a good look, but he isn't wrong either. 1A is a joke compared to 4A.

That doesn't mean a Mr Basketball can't come from the 1A schools. We had 1 at our small 1A school in NE Iowa, he went on to have a decent college career at UNI and is now the head coach at Upper Iowa which, coincidentally, is where Smoldt is committed too.

Granted the level of competition is far different, it's why they have these classes in the first place, but I don't think it's fair to call 1A a "joke".

Can Mr Basketball only go to a senior in iowa?

Yes. I was a part of the voting meetings when I was at the Press-Citizen from 1997-2003.

It's a very political process that's not as objective as it should be. There are reps from papers all over the state advocating for the kids in their area for all-state and players of the year.

I remember having to fight for Glen Worley to get it his senior year when he was far and away the best player in state. Then, there was a battle when Nick Collison and Kirk Hinrich were seniors the same year.

Joe Wieskamp should be a shoe-in next year if he stays healthy. He's far and away the best player in the state. Patrick should get it the following year if he stays healthy.

You think Patrick will get it over Locure?

Two seasons to go, but, yes, I do. His statistics probably won't be as gaudy as Locure's because of IC West's style. But I'll take the 6-7 kid (with room to grow) that can play and guard multiple positions.

I'm sure it was something he wanted really bad and he was basically robbed from it. That is a title you can be proud of your whole life and can tell your kids about. He doesn't get that now. It's gotta suck for him.

IMO, if Joe played at Iowa City West, I think his numbers would probably be pretty even with Connor's, probably still a little bit better.

2017 Joe Smoldt (Gladbrook-Reinbeck) — 29.8 PPG (52 FG%, 49 3FG%), 4.9 APG, 2.7 SPG, 4.7 RPG

2017 Connor McCaffery (Iowa City West) — 19.6 PPG (52 FG%, 41 3FG%), 3.7 APG, 1.8 SPG, 4.8 RPG

I really hope our administrators will delete this entire thread. It is embarrassing me just to read some of the responses to this non issue. Having worked in public education for many years, I am amazed at how good people are at raising other peoples' kids.

It's hard to tell how he would have developed. Not saying he couldn't have been good at West, but it's tough to tell. When he faced tougher competition, he folded. When he faced some of the worst teams in the state, he dominated. He wouldn't have faced anything like the bad 1A schools he faced this year, but he would still be short and average to above average quickness. Could have been a contributor, but it's really tough to tell, like going from HS to college, how a game will translate at a different level.
