Oglesby Announcement on Wednesday

I believe Josh will be a Hawk. As far as Iowa St., I still say that their "5 star" transfer never plays a game for them. Also, Babb is an o.k. player, nothing special to see, after-all, he was a Lickliter type recruit. The other transfer from Michigan St., Chris Allen, was a role player. It looks a lot different when your playing for Michigan St. with the Kalen Lucas' and Raymar Morgan's and Dreymond Green's of the world.

Oglesby would be a nice start but honestly he is not a game changer in any way shape or form. He has the ability to help most any program get better but he is not going to turn any program around.

Not a knock on the kid , I really hope that Iowa lands him. He could be a solid part of a very good class but is not a must get.

Depends on your definition of a must-get. If he's the guy who isn't going to be the best player, but is the guy who starts the domino effect with other in-state players, then he is absolutely a must-get. If he is able to help us land Paige and Woodbury, that gives us a pretty promising future. And getting those guys maybe helps bring in Jok down the line. THERE'S your game-changer.

i don't think it makes or breaks the program either way, but i'll be avoiding the board if he leaves for somewhere else. some of you take this way too seriously. fran hasn't coached a game yet. settle down.

I saw that announcement. We really need to get him. If we lose another in-state kid and our 4th prospect in a week, things are going to be rocky for Fran. He has "talked-the-talk" so far but has yet to "walk-the-walk" per say. His counterpart in Ames has never coached a game yet kids are flocking to play for him. He is quietly putting together a top 20 class. Fran already has his work cut out but he has yet to get a single comittment for 2011 class and if he is going to roll the dice with the 2012 class and that doesn't work out, he could be writing his death sentence before even coaching a game for Iowa.

Maybe it's the bad news recently but I just don't have a good feeling about this. Fran got in late with Josh and I think that is really going to hurt us. I hope I'm wrong becasue if Josh comitts it will help others follow but if he goes elsewhere (hearing Arizona State) we are going the be recruiting what ever is leftover and we've been down that road the past 7 years.

Where to begin...'walk the walk', ok...Fran has inherited a program at an even lower level than ISU's. His team has not even played a game and you are throwing him under the bus...I guess I should not expect anymore, but you and your post thankfully do not represent the opinion of most!

As for ISU, Hoiberg is working hard and while he has had success, I am not concerned. You are comparing apples to oranges. Success is just a matter of time for the Hawks/Fran. Unfortunately, 'fans' such as you have to show a total lack of patience and would prefer to be negative than positive.

I was pointing out that he has gotten us all excited with his talk of uptempo play, recruiting better players and stories that make us feel good. But he has yet to show us that he can pull in the big ones needed to turn around this program quickly. Yes quickly, because he doesn't have the luxury of a 3-4 year process of getting mediocre players while putting up sub .500/.500 seasons (i.e. Lickliter method).

I bet you would get concerned with Iowa State if they start thumping Iowa in recruiting yearly and on the court while making appearances in the tourney while the Hawks sit at home. As a Hawk fan, if a coach with no experience is thumping my team coached by a veteran, I'd be concerned.

I'm not throwing Fran under the bus he just has yet to show his recruiting ability. He has been on the job a month longer than Hoiberg, yet Hoiberg has managed to wrangle in 4 recruits + 4 transfers for the future. Fran hasn't a single body for the future yet and that concerns me. I've been impressed with his coach speak but that can quickly wear off if he can't back it up or "walk-the-walk". If he starts making progress then case closed, I just think he has a lot to prove.

It's Iowa or Minnesota. I don't think we need to worry about Arizona State on this one.

I'm going to somewhat disagree with this. With the recent addition of Joe Coleman, Minny is all of a sudden solid at the position.

I'd be shocked if it's not between Iowa and ASU, and even more shocked if it's just a formality to Iowa's 1st 2011 commit.

AMEN!

I guess I am not sure why he would announce at school if he was going to ASU or Minn. Its not NC, Duke, Kansas, Louisville, etc. Not knowng the kid, seems he could want it to be a positive for local folks, not a slap in the face. He can do that on Twitter like everybody else.

I don't know why this kid is doing a school announcement at all. These things kind of drive me nuts. If you are a five star recruit, then I understand. But that is not the case here.

I am getting a good feeling with Josh Oglesby....hope I am right.
As for Hoiberg and ISU...he is starting from a different spot than Fran. He came in and basically took over the helm with the rest of the program still in place. He did not recruit Cook, he inherited him. He is at ISU, where Big Ten malcontents can transfer and qualify. Iowa and Fran can not get transfers from the non-academic other conferences like Big 12 or Big East....big edge for Hoiberg. But Fran is starting from the ground up, vs what Hoiberg is doing just taking over the top spot with their recruiting program in place already. So Hoiberg is gambling for the quick hit, with guys like White,Babb, and Allen. Fran is starting from scratch and working for 2011,12,13 classes. Fran is also operating from a longer view because everyone knows he is not going anywhere for 5 years,minimum....Barta will leave before he fires Fran after the Lick debacle. In some respects, Fran has a luxury of knowing that he can build to a tourny team by year 3 or 4 or even 5....which might be more sustainable. SA won the BTT in year 2 then had a three year drought, which really hurt his credibility with fans. Better to make the NIT in year 2 and 3, then NCAA in year 4 and 5.

OK you can just stop right there at the bolded statement moron, 1)the requirements aren't much different, and 2) If they are transferring out of the B10 wouldn't they have already qualified academically for the B10? duh.

I want the program to turn around but the constant comparisons to ISU are just getting old. The back end of your post was quite insightful you should have just focused on that aspect instead of making yourself sound stupid and bitter over ISU.

Yes, that is exactly why they would be eligible to play in the Big 12. Some Big 12 transfers would not be eligible to play in the Big 10. So, Fran currently does not have the same luxuries that Hoiberg has regarding academic requirements.

Academics have been discussed over and over down here in KC on sports talk radio regarding Nebraska and current Big 12 standards compared to the Big 10. They have talked about how some of Nebraska's players may not even be eligible once they join the Big 10 and how it could affect their recruiting somewhat down the road.

In general there is a big difference between the standards of the conferences, but ISU and Iowa have very similar entrance standards, which are both tougher than the Big 12s. These kids would have all qualified to enroll at Iowa, its just that in conference transfers almost never occur. As far as I know Haluska had no issues qualifying for entrance to the UoI.

The best academic institutions in the Big 10 have a rough time based on their own requirements(ie Northwestern), not necessarilly the conferences. I don't think a lot of the players suiting up for Thad Matta are Mensa quality.

Tavon Sledge (I think he comitted just recently) is a 4* top 200 in 2011 class plus a couple more they have.

Is that your own star rating? Rivals doesn't list him as rated and Scout has him as a 2...

I am not a big fan of star rating and perhaps the kid will end up being a real player but highly rated, he is not...

Hell Cartwright was more rated than this kid!

I am so anxious for Oglesby to commit to the Hawkeye's!!! This would be a great first step in our 2011 recruiting class!

Rivals has not yet reviewed him, I think it is better to look at the coaches that made offers to him, Huggins, Floyd, Lavin. That is a pretty good list
and says the guy is a good player. So once Rivals rates him I would guess he will be a high 3 or maybe 4.

As I've said in the past, I would be very, very surprised if Oglesby did not choose Iowa. While Josh might not be a program changing, all-Big Ten player out of the gate (perhaps down the road), his commitment would show that Iowa is working its way back. He'll have to get stronger, but he has a better skill set than some give him credit. He has good size for a 2 guard in the Big Ten. Again, not necessarily a program changer, but definitely the type of player Iowa needs - not only for his skill set, but to get some momentum going. A lifetime Hawkeye fan with a chance to stay home and help rebuild his favorite program will go a long ways to get the ball rolling.
