Offensive Record?

It’s not the school size. It’s the setting.

“We can do better!!”

That’s one of those motivational posters from the 90s.

If we could do better we would do better. Iowa is what it is and for every “smaller” school that’s done better than Iowa compare them with Iowas record over a period of 5, 10, or 20 years. I’ll take Iowa.

We just aren’t winning anything significant like the B1G (especially after divisions go away) or winning a 12 team playoff game.
Come on Fry your being a little disingenuous. To say we can’t do better, yes we can do better offensively. Is there a B1G team that is rated worse than we are? I agree with you that we likely will never win a Big Ten title, but short term we can’t be much worse offensively.

So we can do better. Any Stoops brother could come in and run a better offense. I believe as old as as Bobby is that he could come in and take the reins and produce a program that would rival what Kirk has done, His reputation alone would bring in better recruits.

Speaking of recruits, that’s one thing Kirk didn’t even suggest needed improving after the Penn State game. He mentioned the need for improvement but not in recruiting. In my opinion his idea of improving is just playing the weaker teams in our division at home.

I for one never thought we were going to beat Penn State. I liked our chances at Wisconsin only because this is not a great Wisconsin team I knew the odds at Penn State weren’t good. I just never imagined that our offense would be as bad as it was.

Anyone who thought this game was gonna go different than what it did is a total idiot. I don’t mean that as a personal attack, just impartial facts.

If you thought Iowa was going to be remotely competitive and score a single point against PSU after the three previous showings, you are in fact a sub-60 IQ, clinically official idiot. I feel sorry for your children if you were allowed to keep any of them.

How many years of (unfounded) high hopes and subsequent nut shots do you mouth breathers need to finally understand that Iowa football is what we’ve seen the past month? We’re an above average percentile team that will likely stay in that range perpetually (which is a positive), but we will never, ever break into the exceptional percentile. 2015 was fake news against a profoundly historic soft schedule. I’m okay with very rarely sucking ass. If you folks aren’t then this ain’t the team for you probably.

Go Hawks.
This is basically where I am at. The talent disparity is substantial and that should have been recognizable before the game. We do not have the horses to go toe-to-toe with the best teams this year (or for the past couple of years). As much as we might hate to admit it, Penn State could make the playoffs this year (not predicting this but throwing it out as a possibility). We aren't even close to that level.

Honestly I never had us winning both against Penn State and Wisconsin. Now I am revisiting this and may have to go 0-2. I was hoping that Cade could have the ability to throw the ball out quickly before getting tackled in the backfield. That may have been asking too much.

Cade's protection was perhaps a tad questionable

If we have a 50-60th ranked offense, we probably would have won the last 5 west titles and probably 2 big 10 titles. The talent difference isn't as great as most people believe other than. Ohio State. It has been the OFFENSE and ONLY the OFFENSE from 1975. How and why Ferentz' let's this go on is puzzling beyond belief. He won't change so he needs to step aside. ZERO idea on how to run a modern offense

This is an epic post. Nicely done sir!

Yea, when you have a team and the coach and pretty much everyone knows they have to play 100% flawless in college football to win, you have issues and systemic problems. It shouldn't be that tight in college football.

......and this creeps into recruiting for an archaic offense. Seriously, what top end QB or WR's are going to think about coming to Iowa?

We can still win the conference.

Your post is precisely why we have to enjoy years like 2009 when they come. 2015 was the product of the schedule and Wisconsin pissing the game down their leg.

I can't describe the angst when they were taking Stanzi off the field after Wooton destroyed his ankle. I can say with a straight face that the 2009 team would have had a puncher's chance against the national champion because that was back when Nick was still playing Kirkball.
“Puncher’s chance against the national champion”. In 2009.

It’s comments like this…

Alabama won it all going undefeated with the toughest schedule in America. They beat 6 ranked teams including #1 & #2 (Florida & Texas)…destroying them both. Iowa beat two ranked opponents & played their traditional softball schedule beating national power Arkansas St by three & absolutely stealing one from UNI via a blocked fg in a game we deserved to lose.

So no, the 2009 team had zero chance against Alabama. And thinking an nfl kicker would have pushed them over the top…might be the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard

Bullshit. It’s not disingenuous. Look up the definition of that word.

Thinking a Stoops would come coach here is the most laughable thing posted here in the last year easily.

You people all sound like nebraska fans wanting a new coach. Go ask them how that ended up back when they got rid of Pelini. “Cause that’s exactly what’s going to happen when KF leaves. Enjoy the semi-success you have now (or don’t, I don’t give a shit tbh) because Iowa is on the train for the basement once it happens.

Rubes.

Alabama was better than Iowa that year, but Iowa could have beaten them had everything gone perfectly. That was the only time in my lifetime that I could say that with a straight face. Maybe in 2002 we could have beaten Ohio, but we would have lost to Miami and we all remember what USC did to us. Recall that the 2009 team was good enough to go into the Shoe and take Ohio to OT with a QB starting his first ever game. That was the most special team we will ever see.

But again, back in 2009 Nick ran a program that looked pretty similar to Iowa's. It wasn't until he needed an onside kick to beat Deshaun Watson and Clemson that he changed up and completely revamped his strategy. Iowa has not done any such revamp, nor could we in all likelihood, and the results speak for themselves when we go out and play loaded teams now.

Kirk isn't some savior. He's done well but others can do as much. Lots of presumptions in what you're saying. Lots of coaches can build culture, recruit, develop, scheme and win. Watch other teams of TV. Lots of good football happening all over the country.

There is, but there are a lot of factors working against almost the entire Big Ten West. First, it's in the middle of nowhere and the population centers just aren't churning guys like population centers in the south. Second, despite being in the middle of nowhere, there are a bunch of teams all vying for the same guys. Third, the population in the Midwest has been flat to down for decades and it is really starting to show. Fourth, football participation rates in the Midwest are dropping, leaving even fewer guys for the teams to fight over.

The larger states in the Big Ten East have enough critical mass and national pull to stay relevant. Iowa, Wisconsin and Nebraska do not.

NIL and the transfer portal change all of this. We need to adapt to the everchanging landscape and we have proven we dont. While I was happy to get the transfers we did, we missed a big opportunity at O line, obviously.
