There were 30 Big Ten players who averaged 6 carries per game or more.
Out of 30 players Sargent was 18th in YPC, 20th in yardage, 24th in TDs (rushing only).
Taking his receiving into account he was 12th in YD/ATT, 16th in total yards from scrimmage, and 25th in total TDs.
I'd say those things all put together make him below average as an RB in the Big Ten.
Put literally any of those 30 players behind OSU or Wisconsin’s line and they improve their stats. That wouldn’t make Sargent better than any of them comparatively.OK, put Sargent behind OSU or Wisky's offensive line, c'mon. I bet he would be right around a 100 yard rusher/game if he got 20+ carries. He has showed strength getting extra YAC.
Didnt he get dinged somewhat this year? 18th in YPC for a run challenged team.
24th in TDs rushing, Hell our whole team was TD challenged and running game challenged this year.
All I know is late in the game against Nebby he had a big 30 yard carry that flipped the field which turned out to be huge a few minutes later.
He had a very big 3rd and long pickup of maybe 15 or more yards against USC early in the game.
yes, he is a bit slower or indecisive hitting the hole.
Exactly. He's not a bad back, he's more of a journeyman back.Put literally any of those 30 players behind OSU or Wisconsin’s line and they improve their stats. That wouldn’t make Sargent better than any of them comparatively.
I’m not saying he sucks, but his performance isn’t really any more special than the rest of the Big Ten.
I know you weren’t the one to originally bring in stats but me personally I don’t need stats to tell me Sargent is an average to likely below average tailback in this league. It’s eye test.OK, put Sargent behind OSU or Wisky's offensive line, c'mon. I bet he would be right around a 100 yard rusher/game if he got 20+ carries. He has showed strength getting extra YAC.

Lots of starts and game experience on that list. I think both Linderbaum and Kallenberger get to that "next level" with another year under their belt. Kallenberger has played at 3 different positions on the OL the past two years and he should settle in nicely at RT. I think Jackson will be a force and motivated to come back and have a hell of a senior year and get in that first round of the draft in 2021.LT-Alaric Jackson

I agree, I think his vision is suspect as far as hitting cut-backs.I don't necessarily agree that Sargent is an above-average B1G back. If you go team-by-team, I don't think you would find many he would start for. He has a nice all-around skillset (good receiver, excellent blocker), and he has a role on this team if he returns, no doubt.
Those two fellas I think we'll see in there some. Especially Britt. If he hadn't gotten hurt/nicked up he very well may have cemented down one of the guard spots. Heard a lot of good things about himLT-Alaric Jackson

I agree. He was a man amongst boys in HS. Granted small school and all but he went to some camps and did well too. One was in the bay area in California and he won MVP of the Olineman for it. He would have absolutely been the real deal and about to emerge I bet. Feel bad for him and his family that couldn't suck much worseI think losing Ezra Miller is a big deal, seems like he was going to be the next O line superstar. I hope he recovers and his back is not a problem his entire life.
Couldn't agree more with your whole take on this. But especially what I highlighted. I don't think he compliments Goodson nearly as well as what Young would have. I'm open to seeing how the newbies look too. Hopefully we'll find the right kind of mixing and matching. I think Goodson can handle 20 or so touches a game. I wouldn't want to go over that too much but 15 or less would not be enough to me. He's a weapon. Let's use himI know you weren’t the one to originally bring in stats but me personally I don’t need stats to tell me Sargent is an average to likely below average tailback in this league. Sargent would have been the 4th string tailback at Minnesota this year. Here at Iowa he lost his starting job to a true freshman. Now that was a true freshman with some talent but nonetheless a true freshman.
Right now Sargent’s best attributes are receiving and blitz pickup (i.e 3rd down back), however the issue for him is that Goodson is actually a very good receiver and Iowa can’t afford to take him off the field on third down. The point being Sargent really isn’t an ideal complementary back to Goodson going forward.
That’s why I’d like to see what Byrd can do and possibly even the incoming freshman Leshon Williams.
I like Sargent he seems like a good kid and a hard worker. I’m sure he will have some sort of role in our offense next year but at this point I feel he’s only a serviceable player nothing more than that. Again those are all just my opinions.
In my personal opinion Britt is a lock to start at one of the guard spots. I think people forget he tore his acl senior year of high school and still came in here and was getting play time right away as a true freshman. Add to it the things we’ve heard about this kid from Kirk and others as you’ve pointed out. It was similar stuff to what we were hearing about Linderbaum as well which is why I tend to trust it.Those two fellas I think we'll see in there some. Especially Britt. I do like that formation a lot. As I said I think Sargent will have a role and that could be part of it for sure. Seems we didn’t use that formation much outside of the Miami (OH) game and the bowl game. Hopefully we see more of it next year. IKM also an option there as you pointed out if he sticks around. I would also think Tyrone Tracy could be an option in that formation as well. Some good points, but I like Sargent as the 2nd back in the 21-shotgun sets they used a bit this season. That is 2 backs that could either protect, release, run, or lead-block. Creates some scheme challenges. I also like IKM in that role, potentially.
Frankly, now that we are bringing in highly-touted TEs, I wouldn't mind seeing more use of the TE as that 2nd body joining the QB in the shotgun set. Gives a long, physical blocking presence, good lead blocker, but also someone who can threaten in the pass game. As sad as it is to say, I think the FB should be largely marginalized in this offense in favor of athletic, "move" TEs.
