Gambling ads on the tele and the net are like insurance company ads, filling your mind with their push to buy their products 24/7. I think it's a pack of bs myself and this can tear up the Iowa team and tear up many families as guys get addicted to gambling and destroy their family and the family finances. I believe it is ridiculous to bombard these young men and expect them to be perfect and if not, take away their senior seasons. NIL and gambling now rampant in College sports, both garbage.

Maybe instead of betting on sports, he should have just supplied a murder weapon.

Alabama men's basketball star Brandon Miller has led the Crimson Tide to the No.1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history

Former Alabama player Darius Miles and Michael Davis were indicted on capital murder charges last week in the Jan. 15 shooting death of Jamea Harris near campus in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. A preliminary hearing in February revealed that Miller was at the scene of the shooting and transported the gun used.

"They never violated any school policies. So I’m not sure what they would have been suspended for.”

I think part of the basis for appeal will be that the NCAA did not put out its guidance on punishments until after the fact. Yes, he should have known better to bet, but to know you would get sat for a year is a different issue.

I am sure they will also argue extenuating circumstances. Basically, he had no inside info., placed a small bet, did it for fun. Basically no harm no foul. As someone else said, the punishment does not fit the crime.

I am glad KF is supporting his players here. The world has changed. The rules may need some updating in terms and application.

Remember a guy from our neighboring state was allowed to play in the Orange Bowl after he drug a girl down the stairs by her hair and beat the hell out of her. Let's have some perspective on crime and punishment NCAA.....
Imagine knowing jaywalking was illegal but not knowing the punishment for getting caught was the death penalty. Then as you're sitting in the electric chair everyone in the crowd is saying "he knew it was wrong".

So he bet on another Iowa team is the rumor I hadn't seen that confirmed. Womens hoops was the thing rumored to have had some guys betting on but I hadn't seen that confirmed. If that's what he or anyone else did or not.

The can of worms I'm surprised by is KF saying he's all about appealing this for Shannon and having his back... Seems like an interesting slope for KF to slide down if he's going to be ok with what he did to whatever extent and not some of the others. Sure there's nuance to it but it's pretty well known that you can't bet on other sports at your school. So unless there's more to it with Shannon I'm good with him being suspended for the yr. He didn't break a law but NCAA rule since he's over 21

It's pretty well known you can't gamble on your school he can't plead ignorance to that can he?
Kirk hinted during the BTN tour stop that he would like to find out how this investigation started. Seems like a focused attack on both universities.

Hopefully the appeal can get the suspension dropped to something like three games.

It seems like a whole season would mean a major, major infraction.

There's already talk that the DCI may have f-ed up as they're not applying the law equally by using selective geofencing to only pursue certain groups.

I'm not going to condone gambling, but the allocation of any material amount of law enforcement resources to this is absolutely preposterous. As I have pointed out before, the US is currently losing more young people in a year from fentanyl overdoses than we lost in the entire 20 years of engagement in Vietnam. There are open air drug markets and junkies sprawled out in the streets of many major cities in this country. No locale is immune, the scourge of this shit is everywhere. Over 1,000 dead per week on average. And the fvcking Iowa DCI is committing major resources to kids putting $12 bets on sports. This country is an absolute joke.

Hasn't this come out yet? I mean, I haven't really dug into it.
I assume (and we all know what they say about assuming)....
It was either a wild hair by Iowa gaming and/or law enforcement types like attorney general.
And or it made it's way up the ladder somehow because maybe *something* came out in an unrelated case and if they didn't pursue it, it would look really bad.

Again, total assumption.

But, I think it's totally fair to demand a little transparency on what triggered it, and why it's isolated to just two schools. As Kirk said earlier today, "You could fill up Kinnick with college kids and college athletes who've gambled."

Yeah. Focused on on scholarship athletes. Whar charges against U. Students in general?

Yeah my guess is the DCI/law enforcement was tipped off to someone specifically having been doing it. So they then were able to get warrants with probable cause to investigate whomever that was (My guess is it was the ISU Qb who really was neck deep in it and had public videos out there of him betting) So with that whole thing opening the door the DCI took it a step further to just start investigating ISU and Iowa student athletes all over the place.

KF has a legit gripe to wonder why it's not being looked into all over but those law enforcement agencies are going to do what they want. The NCAA can ask them all to do it but they have no power in that regard I don't see how they can compel them to. Unless they have probable cause of some kind (like an idiot betting openly at a bar on social media) I'm not sure if they can randomly just start taking phones from guys or subpoenaing the gambling apps like Fan Duel etc to investigate.

Here's the problem - every single dude who plays D-1 football with maybe a handful of exceptions is in a NCAA tournament pool with a $5, $10 or $20 buy-in. Some of those dudes obviously will pick their own school in a game or two in the tournament. So basically every player could get bonged for a year under this rule.

A firm I used to work at had a former US Attorney as it's chair. We had a gigantic NCAA tournament pool. I asked the chair if he had any thoughts about the pool one day at a happy hour when he was in the top of the leaderboard and could have won it had two games broken his way. Dude said "The minute that the US Attorney office shuts down their pool, I will shut ours down." Point being, even freaking law enforcement does this shit. If the government banned online bracket managers as a means of trying to slow down illegal gambling I'll bet it would have a material adverse effect on interest in the tournament. Gambling drives a fairly material percentage of fan interest. The NCAA knows this, but then goes after garbage like this. It's a joke.

To what extent is the NCAA 'going after' anything? They aren't able to instruct the DCI, FBI or anyone to investigate this stuff really. And they don't have the man power to investigate this stuff on their own. Maybe I'm wrong but my impression is that with all this stuff going on in Iowa the NCAA has just been sitting back waiting on the results of the investigations like the coaches and all of us have been. Then slapping their penalties down after.

When a public regulatory agency or law enforcement agency creates a criminal investigation, the NCAA had to do something. I'm guessing the NCAA would have rather not dealt with this situation.

Some Law Dog in another state will be looking for this and trying to circumvent their superiors in the same way this arose in Iowa. Other schools may yet get caught up.

I wonder if there's any pressure on other states to do their diligence after the results in Iowa, apparently the NCAA only cares if it's thrown in their face. Let me know if anyone sees a speck of integrity in the gaming industry or the NCAA.

“Let me know if…”. You are absolutely safe.

A couple reputable journalists who follow the team seem to think it's likely Iowa will be without two starters in the defensive backfield due to suspension.

Sorry if I missed discussion on this, and not looking to speculate on who, just curious if there seems to be a lot of smoke there?

I opine Iowa and ISU fans will call for lynchings when the true story of this investigation reaches the public.
