I should have stated that the perception was that the B1G was highly competitive. You are correct that this isn't new but now there is a CLEAR difference in public opinion, not just regionally between the two, but everywhere, even in B1G-land. The SEC holds every single built in competitive advantage, they're now exploiting those like never before, thanks in large part to the active perception campaign they've raged unchecked by the B1G or anyone else for a decade now.
I've been an Iowa fan and a B1G fan for my entire life but if I were a 18yr old football player with offers from the SEC, I'd probably go there. Kids want to play for the best and the SEC is clearly the best.
All this adds up to a marginalized B1G moving forward. Jim Delany knew this and this is why he fought so long to keep the status quo. When he signed off on the playoff, he waved the white flag.
