No Big Ten Teams Ranked

When is the last time Alabama, LSU, or Georgia had a great, "athletic" quarterback?

Good points, and LSU et al would be even better with great QBs, would they not?

LSU and Alabammy have pro level defenses, and fantastic line play. The overall talent level is very high when compared to Iowa.

A school like Iowa needs something extra now and then, and that makes all the difference. The non-elite recruiting programs (and there are only two elite recruiting programs in the BoneG) need better than average QBs.

Heck, while I'm at it, OSU is undefeated because they have a mobile, athletic QB. Florida is undefeated because they have a stifling defense.

You can get it done with an immobile, statue of a quarterback, but you had better have stellar line play and great athletes across the board to get it done.

Michigan and OSU are recruiting at the level of LSU and Alabama (last year and upcoming year). Because of this, Michigan and OSU may compete for the brass ring in the near future.

There is a big drop off after that. Wisconsin has actually had a couple of meh recruiting years lately (Iowa actually doing a bit better). MSU is solid but not amazing. Nebraska, the same.

It's great that the BIG has all the good bowls locked up... outcomes could be ugly though. Capt. will have the Hawks in great form by January 1. Love bowl season.

Its not even funny anymore that people really believe A)the B1G is even close to the SEC or B)the B1G will ever catch the SEC in football.

Its just sad now.

I told my son the other night that I was kind of sad that he'd never get to experience B1G football the way I did.

The only thing that is keeping and will continue for the mid term to keep the B1G relevant at all is the huge number of alumni that watch B1G football. But as time passes and the mediocrity continues or more likely accelerates, less and less B1G alumni will care. Or they'll migrate their allegiances to whatever school/team is in the area they live in after school, which most certainly will not be the midwest.

bahaha. Geez what a sob story! I remember my dad telling me he was sad that someday I'd have to experience war the way he did! My god that's why these games are played on the field. What if Oregon kicks Alabama's *** or some other SEC teams *** in the national championship this year? Will so many of you supposed B1G fans be such SEC blowhards then? I mean my god, if you think there is no SEC bias and that with the recruits Michigan and Ohio State are bringing in that the B1G will never compete again? Noooo, it's impossible. There is no possible cataclysmic event that could occur that would ever possibly put the B1G on an even playing field. Not even Michigan and Ohio State dominating the recruiting scene. Give me a break.

Trey if you would, I'd like you to read an article for me.

Here's the important part for you to read

"A difficult bowl schedule is nothing new for the Big Ten. In fact, the conference has played more bowl games against the SEC than any other conference in the BCS era.The Big Ten has gone 17-20 against the SEC in those 14 years with an average point differential of just 3.6 points per game. The Big Ten's 17 victories are almost twice as many as the next-closest conference.
In addition, nine of those 37 games have been in road game environments for the Big Ten, meaning the bowl was held in the same state as the SEC opponent. The Big Ten is 4-5 in those games and has not had any "home" games of its own against the SEC."

So take out O$U's weak nat'l championship game performances and all of a sudden your opinion would have been different. Two games that happened like 6 years ago. That's where your bias is shaped from. Truth is the B1G and SEC are close and if you take out ESPN's bias and the fact there aren't any matchups between the conference in the north and the B1G might just have a winning record against he conference...

Coaches have said what I've said. And I once believed what you believe. The B1G has decided that athletics aren't as important as others have. Good, bad or indifferent, that's the truth. And we're seeing the result of that. The gap has drastically widened over the past decade and when the playoff starts it will become a canyon. 9 of 10 years there will not even be a B1G team in the playoff. That alone accelerates the gap even more. The nail in the coffin will be when the monetary distribution of playoff dollars are distributed based on appearances. At that point, the B1G becomes second tier.

Haha come on man. We're talking about the biggest cash cow in college athletics. If they do suddenly become "second tier" and start losing millions for their universities it won't be like that for long and suddenly you'll see an SEC north if you will where we continue to be a football power. But I don't think the "second tier" aspect of your argument will ever happen.

I once said and believed the exact same things. Its just not true. The SEC is profoundly better. As much as it pains us all to say it, its true.

I'll check back with you when they announce the financial distribution for the playoff. It will be based on appearances and that's money as well as public perception the B1G will lose out on year after year. That's a killer for the B1G when it happens.

I guess my question is how do you know so assuredly that the no one in the B1G will make it to the top 4 in the next few years? I guess I just don't get it since none of us can tell the future or know how good/bad any of the teams in the nation will be those years? Has O$U never finished in the top 4? Michigan, Wisconsin, Nebraska? I guess I don't see why it's such an impossible feat.

The following SEC teams would kill everyone but O$U in BoneG.

Alabama and they would kill O$U too. I said before they would beat a Big 10 All Star team this year.
Florida
LSU
South Carolina would probably kill O$U too.
Georgia

Alabama's 2nd team would win the Legends, and they could lose half their first team and still win the Leaders

Ohio St is the only one with a shot. And yeah, I do expect them to reach the playoff a time or two over the next 6-8 years probably. The rest of those teams you mention, nah, don't see it. You said it yourself, the rankings are tilted in favor of the SEC. One drops & another rises. That's not going to change, in fact there is evidence that it is strengthening. Just last week, 4 of the top 6 schools were from one conference for the first time EVER. Which conference? Yep, the SEC. Look at recruiting, the SEC has like 10 teams in the top 16. The gap is now a canyon. It won't ever be closed.

We can discuss WHY the SEC is dominant, there are many reasons, some you mentioned. Geography, university commitment, conference commitment & many others. IMO the biggest was that they won the war of perception. Guys like Clay Travis, Paul Finebaum and of course ESPiN. That piece of the puzzle was ginormous in why the SEC won the war. And yes, they did win the war. The SEC won & the B1G lost. See playoff.

The B1G will always exist but for the most part this conference is done playing for championships. There's just too much working against them.

I think you have a very good point about an "sec north". I could totally see an Ohio St say...screw this, the B1G sucks, we still want to compete, get us out of here.

My second tier comment is in regards to competitive status. They'll maintain top tier status for the mid term financially because of the massive numbers of alumni who watch football. But as I stated, over time, people quit watching a clearly inferior product.

The Big Ten has won 1.5 titles in the last 37 years, if people were going to quit watching an inferior product, wouldn't they have done it by now?

Its a progression. The B1G was highly competitive for the vast majority of your 37 yr time frame. That is becoming less and less true. With each year the B1G looks even more inept. The thing people, myself included, don't realize until they move away from the B1G footprint is just how terribly the B1G is perceived. In most places people just don't even take the B1G seriously. Its very similar to how Iowa fans view Iowa St. Point being is that it is becoming increasingly difficult to recruit the type of players the B1G needs, skill guys. The skill players the B1G used to get from the south and west now just stay home and play in the Sun Belt conference. The NFL will find them, they know this. Everyone is on TV, the B1G just doesn't have much to sell anymore.

Just as an example...my kids KNOW that the SEC game is on at 2:30 on CBS every saturday. And they watch that game unless Iowa is playing. I never did that. I always watched B1G games. Its changing.

How so? In the 1980's the Big Ten's highest average finish in the AP poll was 6.4 and a team from the B10 finished in the Top 10 11 times during that decade. In the last 10 years the B10's highest ranked team has averaged a ranking of 5.1, while B10 teams have finished in the top 10 21 times. The Big Ten has not been any worse over the last decade than they were in the 80's, actually they've been better. The actual facts don't really back up your argument. Like I said before the B10 has only won 1.5 national titles in the last 37 years, this is not a new trend.
