Nick Brooks is gone already

Ya know, I realize that more and more, committing to a team in athletics has become a perpetual motion yo-yo. However, I wonder if these kids realize that they are starting their "professional" careers (in this day of NIL, can we call college athletics anything but professional?), basically, starting their career by lying? That's all it is really. Do they expect that the next team they commit to is really going to believe them? Kind of like being unfaithful, does the replacement spouses ever have a degree of trust that they will be each others until end of time?? Guess I come from a different time when integrity was valued, but also expected.

The other aspect of this that has me curious is that in not so distant times, being the alpha in Iowa's offensive line was a sure ticket to playing on Sunday. True, it has been less so recently, but we still funnel TE's to the NFL so it is not inconceivable that a Proctor or a Brooks could not only punch their ticket here but now make serious bucks in the NFL minor leagues. I cant help believing that being at a blue blood like Bama would potentially dilute their stock, perhaps impede their potential to standout, which they could do at Iowa almost from day 1.

Iowa is not going to totally regress in the OL no matter what it seams like to those of us who have suffered through this current drought. Kirk knows, and the staff going forward know, that our only chance to really compete in the future world of mega conferences is to shore up the trenches.

Just my thoughts, really. I cannot believe that we have regressed so far as to not only encourage dishonesty and lack of integrity, but to actually view it as an attribute. Somehow I hope that there will be an equalizing effect, perhaps the NCAA will grow a set and restrict eligibility or even potential renumeration from NIL as players play musical teams (say perhaps when you are sitting out a year for eligibility)......

I know, its a fools hope.

Proctor has started at LT since game 1 as a true freshman. So no this wouldn't apply to him. Had he came to Iowa he woulda had to play on the right side or left guard to start off with.
Brooks who knows yet. But Proctor is what he is. He's a huge monster of a guy that's only going to get better. He could very likely be the #1 overall pick after his 3rd yr. I'll bet he'll be a top 5 guy at worst. If you start 3 yrs at LT for Bama and dominate (he's not dominating yet mind you he's still getting beat by speed rushers) you won't get unnoticed, far from it

yeah, I cant disagree, but I still contend that he wouldn't have just been a starter at Iowa......I expect he could have made a significant difference in our lines performance, and even though he played for Iowa, I expect he could be a top 5 pick regardless. Just seems like when we are in contention for a game changer, we usually end up outside looking in.......only consolation is that Bama is lagging at #8 in the CFP. Probably wont stay that way, but anything negative about Alabama gives me some enjoyment anyway....the only time I have ever rooted for them was when Forrest Gump was the return specialist!

Despite the inconsistencies we have seen from Proctor at Bama and Colby/Richman playing most of the year banged up, that core group would be better than anything Iowa has rolled out this year.

Sidenote: Anybody taking notice that there are a lot of injuries along the offensive line?

Ellsbury
Richman
Stephens

Is Colby healthy? A patchwork line is about to become more patchwork. Not to go full Homer, but their ability to win games is starting to become more and more impressive. This should be a 3-9 football team, regardless of who they are playing.

The more stars on an Iowa recruit the less likelihood he plays at Iowa. A local athlete will just use their home town team as a jump off point or safety net as they weigh the offers coming in. I'm pretty jaded and don't care one bit about a non-signed player and really only worry about keeping the good ones. Now a coach has to worry about verbal, signed (because of the portal), guys leaving early for the NFL, and NIL. Somehow in all that they have to field a competitive winning team or get fired. In the sum of things a guy like Brooks is a big miss, but Iowa will have a shot at him still. More important is finding an OC that can make players WANT to come to Iowa.

Joe Alt should be on here as well.

Kakert seems to think this was driven by him wanting to take visits and Iowa saying, go for it, just decommit before you do. Iowa is still in the lead for him and he thought there was still a pretty good chance he recommits. Not saying he will, just sharing what he said and he seemed to have inside knowledge of what this process has been.

The thing is, yes, it will be difficult for Iowa to contend for NC's every year, but at Iowa a player is going to learn the proper technique and skills to perform in an NFL style offense. There is a reason some guys from Iowa go on to the NFL and start from day 1. they have had a number of them over KF's coaching tenure. (Gallery - Scherff - Bulaga - Wirfs - Linderbaum - Yanda, etc.) I'm sure I am forgetting some but these guys started the first year. They are NFL ready out of college. Instead of chasing the shiny object now with NIL $$$, for krist's sake, look at the long term and the benefits should pay off much more later.

My point is Iowa lineman are NFL ready right from the bat.

Iowa's biggest NIL is the NFL and I know people don't want to hear this, Brian was a recruiter and he recruited line players and people think he's a good Oline coach. Anyone who thought there would be no collatoral damage from firing him mid season was foolish....but it *should* help long term.... but like players? Loved playing for Brian. I am happy Beth did what she did but she really didn't do the program any favors short term, we'll have some hindsite to look back in a few years from now on whether this move helped and hurt Iowa football.

She might have had to do it, if recruiting was going to be an issues and if it was true if a couple large donors threatened pulling the cash cow. I get it and it was going to happen anyway.

I think Iowa really misses Reese Morgan and his recruiting and development. But Brian learned from him and I also think is a good O-line coach. Agree.

Regardless of what when down. NIL has really fucked over schools like Iowa.
Really trying to recruit any 4 or 5 star recruits isn't even worth the call. Take the 2 and 3's and develop them and hope you don't lose them before the senior year. To me all NIL has and will do is give the powers of college football another way to steal a kid now and another chance when they weren't able to recruit him the old way. Take the damn thing blow it up and make two conferences. All the power and glory hounds in one and the rest of us in another. I watch college ball because I hate the nfl and the money grab it turned into. Starting to really feel the same about college ball now.
Money truly is the root of all evil! The rich will always have its way and the rest of us can atleast know we worked for ours the honest way. Integrity and loyalty sure disappears when the almighty green pinted paper is flashed around.

The college game is all about the laundry. That's it. If you threw all 4 and 5 star recruits out of the system the level of play would presumably go down a bit, but assuming maintenance of relative parity it wouldn't change the viewership at all. I had never watched a woman's basketball game until the tournament this past year. I only watched this year due to the laundry.

I'd have no problem if CFB split into a 25 team blue blood league that Iowa wasn't in. Put us in some conference or division with teams like Illinois, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Northwestern, Sparty, Purdue and Indiana and I would be completely fine with that. The money would be limited, but I don't think that would be the end of the world.

No matter what they say the bluebloods need the Wisconsins and Iowas of the world. Michigan constantly finishing 6-6 or worse over a decade would destroy the goodwill of their program and that is precisely what would happen with a super conference.

In Iowas case I don't really think it has. If anything it gets them in the door with some kids that normally it wouldn't. Examples being Cade, All, and Caleb Brown. I don't think they'd have considered Iowa otherwise frankly. The combination of NIL and opportunity was what sealed the deals for them.

Now sure head to head recruiting won't be easy against those throwing big bucks out there. But that's already always been the case for Iowa. It's not like Iowa was ever getting top 15 classes consistently. When we crack the top 25 that's newsworthy. Iowa is often in the 40s and 50s prior to now.

What NIL does is open the transfer portal to Iowa more. That's where if the injury bug would quit biting so hard it would be a really huge thing for Iowa. Going forward they can continue to use that to plug holes. But none of that will matter till they get an OC/system that will be more aggressive and less predictable. Not to mention developing a Qb and a couple WRs

Tough to argue with your position on NIL as it exists right now.

It's almost as if geographic groupings of the schools should be considered. Perhaps this would maximize fan interest as rivalries would grow among friends, relatives etc. living in neighboring states who cheer for those schools. Someone could even come up with fun nicknames for some of these games.

Ideally, two or three of the schools would be consistently good in the geographic grouping. That would ensure good competition among them, but also make it fun for the rest of the schools to try to beat one of the powers.

The main thing to consider would be limiting this grouping to a reasonable number of schools, so that every team could play each other every season. That way, every team would be playing to be the champion, and the best record at the end of the year would determine that.

The geographic grouping of teams maybe sounds a little weird right now, but I bet interest would only grow if this grouping stayed the same over many years and fans grew accustomed to the same teams playing each other every season.
