They physical structure is the same. The video board setup is completely different.

The old board, the video could only take up a very, very small portion of the whole board. The rest was ads, stats, down, distance, score, etc.

Now the whole board can be video, and then they can section it off into ads, down, and distance as they want:

For one, it's HD, and the picture (even with the ads) is bigger than it was before. It also has the ability to "expand" so it fits the whole screen, which the old display did not.

The old board was installed between the 2004 and 2005 seasons. Think back to then, and then think about how far technology has advanced since then.

ISU will be doing the same soon. Half their board space is dormant at the moment but they could do the same thing with their interstate overhead looking scoreboard.
