Devo - When they were still in Akron Ohio Recorded 1974-1976
released 1978 Elevator Records

Interesting facts about Devo.

Several members attended Kent State University at the same time as the Pretenders Chryssie Hynde.

They were in and out of several bands together on the college music scene.

On the fateful day of the May 4, 1970 protest future Devo member Jerry Casale was standing only fifteen feet away from one of the the four students who was fatally shot.

Mark Mothersbaugh has spent most of his post Devo career writing soundtracks for television shows. Among others the late 1990's show "Working", which starred Fred Savage, featured a Mothersbaugh composition in the opening and closing credits.

Their "Whip it" video, a trashy hoot in 1980, would draw the ire of the PC police today. It was only a satire of the American cowboy lifestyle, among other things. Think of the de-evolution theme that ran through much of their material.

Speaking of San Francisco, another band "nominally" from the area. Had a quick spurt of popularity in 1979/1980 due to the video for this song getting played on a forerunner to MTV called "Pop Clips", a show that appeared on Nickelodeon. The show was produced by none other than Micheal Nesmith of "The Monkees" fame. It also showed, and probably made popular, Huey Lewis and the News. At the time, they were going to be the next break-out sensation on the "New Wave" scene!

Nesmith was one of first to realize the potential of a music video channel and pitched the idea to numerous executives. His perseverance was rewarded when MTV ran reruns of the old Monkees TV show and played some of their old songs, introducing them to a new generation of teens. Ironically, the only Monkee not to join the reunion tour on a full time basis was Michael Nesmith.
