More house reporting Iowa has 2 early entries ....

fwiw

McShay has AJE going 29th and Wirfs going 30th both to really good organizations.

You wonder for a guy like AJE, if he really is a backend of the 1st round guy is there something to be said about coming back and trying to get top 10? Pass rushing is such a premium in the NFL, if he comes back and dominates he could be a top 10, possibly top 5 pick next year.

Again I still expect him to go but just a thought.

If that’s where the draft board slots them, and if I were them, I’d buy the insurance and come back. Unlike King, they have off the charts measurables and would really be able to move up the board with one more year.

I agree with both of you, but this projection stuff is such a crap shoot. They kill it at the combine and/or individual workouts they shoot up 10 spots. McShay is just one guy, so who knows.

That’s why I said based on what the advisory board says. Those guys have all the inside info from teams and are typically spot on.

mock drafts are not equal to NFL evaluations. we'll see.

more likely it's Stone, his combine numbers won't reach Hooker's (4th RD) and he won't be able to increase his speed enough to change his draft round.

AJE has said he bleeds black and gold. If his eval is late first/second then he will be back. 10-15 is another story.

I know if it were me I would look more into what teams I would be possibly going to rather than what number in the draft. With the changes in the contract process the really big money doesn't happen anymore and it is a little more balanced compared to where it was compared to draft position.

If I were going to possibly go to Miami, either new York team, Washington, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Jacksonville, or some of the perennial bottom dwellers, I would get the insurance and roll the dice and come back and hopefully get lucky with a trade for draft position or a good team has a down year where they can pick you up. Regardless of the money if you are playing for a crap organization that can't win it has to affect your general happiness.

Agree on both. Like I said the pass rushing is such a premium in the NFL. People are paying attention to what the 49ers are doing and all the capital they’ve spent on their front 4. I have a tough time seeing a guy like AJE going anything lower than top 15. He has the measurables which is why he was a 5*, and he has the production.

Did anyone see Wirfs pulling a Brandon Scherff and moving to guard in the NFL? Six foot five, which is only his listed height by the way, seems a little short to be an NFL offense tackle.

We will have to see how things go at the Underwear Olympics, better known as the combines.

Anything is possible, Gallery moved to guard and he was I believe 6’7. Wirfs easily has the size to play Tackle in the NFL. Will all depend on the needs of the team that drafts him.

Chase Young was getting all the national publicity from the defensive side of the B1G. If AJE stays, it will be all about him next year. I think AJE can have a year just like Young did. Remember, this was just his first year as a full time starter. Another year under his belt as starter would carry a little bit more weight in the NFL next year. These mock drafts can’t be relied on. These are made up by the media types that just want readership. The NFL evals are what mean anything and there is a big signing bonus gap between the 1st round and 2nd round and gets smaller as the rounds go down.

I think that Worfs has the footwork and quickness to play tackle in the NFL. He also is valuable because he can play either tackle spot or he could slide inside. Versatility as an OL in the NFL is valuable with the smaller roster sizes.

Yep.
But NFL scouts put a higher premium an conbine numbers than college game numbers. The mock drafts aren't worth the "1" and "0" they're written with; it's the NFL evals that matter.

yep. but top 15 depends on teams slotted and their needs/cap/number of picks/etc

evals will include not just talent but the nfl landscape.

Agree, but that’s in essence what I’m saying about pass rushing being a premium. Every team especially those in the top 15 can use more pass rushers, and passing on a talent like AJE would be risky.

I wonder if Young's stock has actually dropped somewhat. He has basically been invisible since the October Wisconsin game.

Young has quick moves, but Eppy may have more raw power.

If i recall correctly Gallery had trouble with quick NFL defensive ends. His slidestep was a hair slow, and it necessitated the move inside.

Maybe it was just me but Young seemed like he took a lot of plays off last night. There were also a few times I saw him just try and back into the middle of the line almost completely turning his back to the QB.

The last few games I have watched him it looks to me he is relying too much on his speed rather than mixing his moves up

I don't mind Wirfs or AJE leaving early. Iowa got 3 productive years out of them. No need for Iowa fans to get greedy.

The thing I hated with TJ Hockeson is that Iowa wasted a year of eligibility as a redshirt, and he was gone after his sophomore year. At least Iowa got 3 years out of Fant, minus one bowl game. Can't blame 1st rounders for leaving early. Not sure what Hooker and Nelson's motivation for leaving early. Josh Jackson and James Daniels each had a chance to be a 1st rounder, but it did not work out, going in the 2nd. Close enough I guess.

The other part about leaving early is that players are elligible for NFL free agency 1 year earlier too.

As much grief Desmond King gets for coming back for his senior year, it did give him a chance to work on his kick return skills, which I think has benefited his NFL career. He may not have gotten a bog payday on draft day, but I hope he gets his big paycheck in free agency when it comes.

I have a real fear that if Stone leaves he may go undrafted. He isn’t Hooker...not even close honestly. And Hooker didn’t come off the board until Round 4. Hell, King wasn’t off the board until Round 5. Hopefully he listens to the right people and comes back.
Good post. Stone is a good college player, but lacks size and speed needed to play safety in the NFL. Great player for the Hawks, unfortunately limited physically to play in the NFL.
