Michigan St. Analysis

Just wanted to post an analysis of what I thought about the meet last night.

125
Matt McDonough was impressive. Came out firing and totally dominated. Matt is wrestling night and day different than those first two meets.

133
Tony Ramos is going to be a fan favorite for years to come. He is always attacking and looking to score points.

141
Mark Ballweg-great match against an inferior opponent. Wasted little time getting to his offensive, and the move he used to pin the guy was beautiful. No chance that match was going into the 2nd period.

149
As some others have said he is just outmanned out there at this level. Did show a little bit of the funk he has, but Osterman outfunked him. Brands was visibly upset after the match as Chiri for the last 15-30 seconds had his head down on the mat.

157
Aside from the 5 point move St. John dominated. Whenever he takes a shot he just finds a way to pull it in. He is very smooth and he just wore out Cheza. Very aggressive and fun to watch.

165
Kerr looked flat, but found a way to win. I love watching Kerr scramble, but it would be nice to see him pick up his offensive attacks.

174
Lofthouse had trouble getting to the legs, had some good set ups just couldn't get through the head hands defense. I think EL will be just fine.

184
Easily the most exciting match of the night. Hinton came out slugging and Gambrall was ready to slug. Hinton didn't wrestle much (just a lot of slapping in the face). Gambrall did a good job of keeping his cool. Gambrall had a nice double leg too bad he finished it on the Iowa bench and not inbounds.

197
Luke looked good. Very aggressive and was able to finish his shots which is huge for him. For the second night in a row he totally wore down his opponent.

285
Rasing believe it or not was pretty aggressive. He took quite a few shots he just couldn't finish. It seemed like he was hitting a shot and then stopping. If he finishes just one of his attempts he wins the match.

Yea, thought I remembered Ramos getting a pin, but no. Just re-watching some of the meet and he got the technical fall 17-1 Glad you think EL will be just fine. Is that next year or the year after. Seriously though, he just hasn't looked as good as advertised yet. Time will tell.

Oh yeah thats right forgot he got the tech fall. You're right he hasn't looked as impressive as some thought he would, but give it time its early.

HawkeyeD I agree with most of what you said. Where i disagree would be with luke and Blake. In watching both the ISU and Mich St. duals i thought Luke just seemed off balance when taking his shots. He looked better Sat. night, but against ISU it seemed as though he would be in deep on a shot then next thing we saw he is on his hips and winds up not getting the take down or worse winds up getting taken down. As for Blake, both nights he looked tired half way throught the match. 3 or 4 times in the isu match all he had to do was apply a cross face and spin and he would have had the take down. It appeared he opted to lay on top until a stalemate was called. He did take more shots against Mich St. but they were not good shots, half hearted and no "pop". I expected alot more out of both of these guys this year even this early in the season.
I am excited with McD and Ramos, wow these guys are going to be fun to watch. Mark at 141 will come along, Chiri seems to be in way over his head at this point. I was a bit surprised that Kerr got the start over janssen based on his match friday night. EL will improve, to me showed alot of promise. Gramball looked good though i would like to see the same fire he had when carrying his opponent off the mat in the middle of the mat. If he can harness this fire, and put it in the right place, he will be real tough this year.

I dont think Gambrall handled it very well actually. Took him down well out of bounds into the bench and after the whistle. Granted Hinton was just slapping the whole match and I'm guessing Grant wanted to send a message. I think he did the exact opposite of keeping his cool which is why Brands came out to break him out of the reset.
