McNamara Update

Bring in someone to install the wing t or wishbone. Ten wins a season, minimum. It seems so easy. If we are going to be antiquated, at least be the sort of antiquated that’s hard to prepare for.

That doesn't prepare players for the NFL game and wouldn't be a long term solution. Top recruits wouldn't come here. You think we have a lot of 3 stars now, that would be the top with many 2 stars.

Iowa's best selling point to recruits and and to stay competitive is selling them their rate of getting guys into the NFL. If you did what you propose, it would be detrimental to the program.

I think the problem wasn't the list of plays, the problem was two QBs that didn't know which play on your list was most likely to succeed given the defensive line up the QB faced. Then the ball would get snaped and the QBs were looking like Custer at Little Big Horn.

The problem was the line and has been for the past 2-3 seasons. Iowa needs an effective running game to do everything they want to do. If the line does its job and they have a decent running game, all of a sudden the QB's and WR's look better.

I agree that the potential of an NFL career is Iowa's best recruiting ploy. But they need to find out how to extend that success to QB's and wideouts.

Yes, it is astonishing how few players from those groups have made an impact in the NFL. Getting to the point of embarrassing now.

Iowa's offense is complex in the sense that it is pro style. Modern spread offenses generally halve the field on most plays and require 1 read. The presnap read is generally done by the sideline (fake snap, QB looks at the sideline on whether to change the play). It simplifies the game. Iowa's QB is expected to make a presnap read and on a passing play as many as 3 reads before passing or scrambling.

That said, it was not the complexity of the offense that stymied the offense the last two seasons. It was an OL that could not pass or run block, and a QB that was incredibly immobile, had terrible pocket instincts, could only throw accurately when in rythym, and by the end was suffering from PTSD given the number of sacks he took.

As has been said many many times, its not the Xs and Os, but the Jimmys and Joes. We should have better Jimmy and Joes this season.

Ya'll see on Saturday Iowa put out a picture of Cade in the huddle? So he's back to practicing anyway. How much and all that is anyones guess. But that was music to my eyes. For him to have a snowballs chance at being 100% for game day I figure he'd need at least this full weeks worth of practice leading up to it. He was out for the better part of 2 weeks wasn't he? Man I hope he's good to go on game day.

Yeah I saw that about Cade on a “I on the Hawks” podcast, but I haven’t heard anything officially from the athletic department. Hopefully it’s true as timing in passing routes takes time to develop.

Yup

Yeah I imagine they'll have one press conference this week at some point to announce whatever they want and take some questions. I'm not sure what day that'll be though Rob Howe probably knows.

Hoping C-Mac (the football one) starts, leads a 5-6 play drive, ending on a 30+ TD throw to All. Hoping Hill takes over the 2nd series and grinds out another one, with a 10-yard toss to Lachey. Get up 14, let the D dominate and get a pick-6. Let C-Mac start the 2nd and get another scoring drive and call it a day.

Coast to a 30 to 3 win to cover. Give up zero sacks, get 150+ rushing and get a little confidence in the OL.

On to the Ronald McDonalds.

Moronic take. And I say that with all due respect, xir, but the take is moronic. The coach's kid has a stipulation in his contract that he has to try to put up 25 a game on average. Now sure, that clause carries as much weight legally as a letter to Santa Claus, but Kurt is going to try to make sure his boy gets his 25 points per game. You don't average 25 points per game with Iowa's offense and schedule by only putting up 30 against Utah State. Gotta run that score to give the youngster some cushion on that 25 ppg requirement. I see this one shaking out 69-3 or maybe 69-0. They have to get close to two games of offense out of this one just to make sure there is some turd polish left by the end of the season when we hit that point where Iowa's offense can't score more than 14. My biggest hope is that we don't get Cade hurt by forcing him to stay out there in garbage time to hit Brain's number.

Do you guys wonder why Goetz didn't tear up the contract after Barta left?

Maybe the past week or two would have been the best time for that. She could simply release a statement saying she didn't feel comfortable operating in that regard, that was something between the previous athletic director and Brian, she thought it was best to move on from it, etc...

She'd save a lot of people from having to answer a lot of annoying questions in coming weeks (herself included).

Yup I wondered that as well right from the git go of her taking over. Maybe she woulda thought that was a disrespectful thing to do to Barta? That said she was around for that contract being put together as Bartas #2 while he did it. Doesn't mean she was for it at all or even had anything to do with it. But at least that'd explain why she hasn't torn it up. Maybe she is sorta ok with it. And if so that'd be a check against her for me. I think she shoulda been more directly asked about it.

That's the single worst thing they coulda done contractually to an assistant coach. You don't see anyone else in college football with any such thing. To me if you deemed it necessary to have that then you're saying he wasn't good enough last yr and he shoulda been let go.

Now KF BF and the entire O are going to have one eye on the scoreboard in the 4th q of games and that's not fair to them. Not to mention be asked about it after every single game and as the games come and go into the season where he stands will be just tracked to the Nth degree... If you don't like the job he does at the end of it fire him. You don't need a few arbitrary stats he has to hit to decide it for you. What if he avgs 24.7 pts/game but they win 10 games and get into the playoffs? (wildly unlikely but my point stands) So just tear up the dumb contract and do it any day now before Saturday would be the right time to do it.

Don't know that it was a moronic take. On this board? We see a lot worse takes than that. A lot.

That said, I agree that KF will try to run up scores this year. Sad. But, I would do the same thing given the corner he and his son painted themselves into.
