McNamara Update

KF said that he is “hopeful” that Cade will start vs Utah. He has not practiced since the injury. Cade is following a formal recovery procedure Iowa uses. He seems to be on the right course.

This is my response to KF’s 17 minute interview with availability on HN with better sound on Hawk Central. I did my best but won’t bet my social security check I got it right.
The utah we are playing, we could win without an offense. Just use defensive points only. Outside of the clowns, that goes for the entire preseason

I want CM to play as much as any other Hawk fan, but if we can’t beat USU and a neutered clowns team with our #2 guy we have bigger problems than Cade McNamara and the season isn’t going to go well anyway.

Agreed, but I think most of us are anxious because of a recent history of day-to-day "soft tissue" problems that never go away. The Keagan Johnson thing from last year is tough to get out of our heads.

I also wish they would just speak plainly. Soft tissue can refer to anything aside from a bone, so could be an ACL, meniscus, dislocated patella, or strained muscle. I know the student-athlete has to consent to sharing info because it is PHI (protected health information), but geez, guys. Just get together and say, "Cade strained his quad, he is working through rehab, hopefully we get him back in 2 weeks." Do they really think they gain some sort of competitive advantage by speaking in their vague code?

BTW, is Petras actually practicing or is he in street clothes getting medical treatment? He was not listed on the depth chart.

He's retired. He hasn't played or practiced since his injury and has said he can't physically throw anymore. He's there strictly in a coaching/mentoring role.

FERPA, mi amigo. Universities aren't covered entities under HIPAA but they are under FERPA. When you're screwing around with that stuff the only 100% safe way is to keep yer yap shut. There is absolutely, positively no benefit to the team or players in revealing information, so why say anything? Literally the only itch it scratches is fans' curiosity.

Here's a great article on the topic as it relates to collegiate sports.

That's academics, is that really suppose to cover athletics?

Really an intersection of FERPA and HIPPA, right? Because anything medical is definitely HIPPA.

I see this is answered within the link, which I skimmed but will not be reading in detail. The answer is yes (they specifically mention the interaction of these 2 laws within the article), but also not exactly, as FERPA seems to take precedence since The University is not a "covered entity" under HIPPA, as you said above (though the sports med staff is).

It is mentioned in the article that some schools have athletes sign consent forms providing blanket permission for sports teams (i.e. coaches) to share basic information with media. We know Ferentz has spoken before of a player's "academic indigestion," which seems like a much bigger FERPA violation than mentioning someone pulled a quad. So are we lead to believe Iowa has such a blanket consent form?

The main gist is that to KF and the program, there is zero—none—benefit to disclosing any medical information.

The only thing that does is satisfies fans’ curiosity and they give no shits about it. What better way to avoid legal or other trouble than to say nothing?

Well his type of injury usually ranges from one week to four weeks recovery time. Worst case he misses the first two games unless we’re not being told the truth.

On the bright side we have one of the best Offensive Coordinator’s in college football, so no worries here. :(
Iowa's first game will be 3 weeks after his injury.

Problem is, our #2 QB has been injured and hasn't practiced any of fall camp. It's very possible that Iowa will start the season with a guy who 6 months ago was sitting #3 on Wisconsin's depth chart. (And who happened to throw 3 picks vs Iowa's backup defense during the Kid's Day scrimmage.) Lower your expectations, folks.

I am sure if it comes down to playing the backup that we will see a very conservative play calling and short control type passes…………aka Brian ball……………….. ok……….. yikes!!!.

I've been an Iowa fan the entire time I've been old enough to understand what sports are. I have no expectations whatsoever and I never will.

Labas was listed as behind Hill even before he got hurt last spring I believe. Hill overtook him almost immediately. That doesn't mean they coulda flipped again this August had Labas been healthy. Regardless they were pretty close evidently. I'm not sure it's a huge difference making thing with either of them being in there.
