Mccabe....what is he giving us?

I'm puzzled here. His shooting is leaving a lot to be desired. Is it a confidence thing, quickness thing, or a mechanical problem in his shooting technique? I'm sure he has got to be frustrated, but I always think after he misses when was the last time he made a couple of shots (or even a shot) in a row.

He had a couple big rebounds in the game. With saying this I understand we could get the rebounding and more offense out of a different player.

Right now he is just an agitator, but I think he'll end up a good shooter and a guy that can use his body and get fouled.

right now? Just about nothing. This was discussed in the student section tonight. He is bringing nothing to the table on offense right now except turnovers.

I agree strat...He has hit some big shots for us this year, but he should not be seeing the amt of pt that he is. It's especially discouraging considering the staff always brings in McCabe, Bromer and Marble at the same time and takes out Cartwright, Gatens and May. Ease your subs in a bit by putting Marble in for May first and then maybe putting in May and McCabe for Gatens and Cartwright....

I'm not a coach (playa) but I think they need to stagger their subs a little bit.

Not all freshmen are big impact players. Some need a chance to develop. When this roster fills out in the coming years players that aren't 100 percent ready won't need to be out there as much.

I like McCabe though. He's a tough kid, the refs don't seem to like him though. He needs to get some confidence back in his shot though. He's missing a lot of 0 footers!

I was as frustrated as anyone tonight with him and I have to keep reminding myself that he and Marble are Freshman. Don't have to do that with Basabe, but I digress. He was definitely a liability out there tonight unfortunately and not sure why he played so much. I hope he develops because I like him and he can stroke it from three.

I think John Lickliter might have been a better shooter. Now Mccabe probably has the better upside (I mean I'm sure he does), but I think a little lick shot has a better chance of going in from the perimeter.

He is not good, plain and simple. He does pout pretty good after every turnover and missed shot though.

I can't point to any stat or skill, but he must do something right, as the Hawks seem to play really well when he is on the floor. The Cartwright/Marble/McCabe/Basabe/Cole lineup was great for us tonight. And I really like the rotation McCaffery has developed. Eveyone has a defined role and it seems like players have a good sense of when they'll be called on to get in the game. He is great at getting guys into the flow of the game.

It's great to see the passion back in hawkeyenation.....lord knows my living room was as loud as its been since the Horner/Brunner/Haluska year.....but let's try to refrain from calling individual players out on this forum. McCabe is a true hawk and is only a freshman.....some take longer than others. But he did come in and rebound when we were getting killed on the boards and was in during our big run in the 2nd half.

Let's be patient and give these young guys some room to develop without killing them by name on here.

He's a Freshman for the love of God. Give the kid a break. He has talent and a ton of heart. He will be a contributor soon enough. Right now the game is too fast for him but it will slow down as he gets more reps.

I don't mean to rag on the guy. I don't doubt he is doing his best. And, he is a Hawk. But, I do feel he is starting to become more of a liability out there.

Correction. McCabe's great at turning the ball over and fouling. Both of those stats show up in the box score.

Appoligize for the cheapshot. Eventually he's going to be a decent player, but not there yet. I just can't understand why he's still getting as many minutes as he is.

I agree, lets take it easy on the Freshman. Marble had his moments tonight but too often looks like a Freshman as well.

Was it agonizing to watch him miss that bunny late? Yes. But he's a lot like Cole: a hustle guy. He brings energy to the floor, and while he's become a bit of a liability in the stat sheet, he's made some important contributions. 5 boards isn't a huge number. But he got those for us when we needed it most.

Eventually he's going to settle down and not make some of the mistakes that he's making now. And when that happens, he really will be like Cole is right now. And by that time, (hopefully) he'll be able to play the kind of role that Cole would/should have been playing the past 3 1/2 years (if the rest of the team had been better). Once that happens, he's going to be one the fan favorites.

1. Necessity
2. Development for the future.

This year's almost a throwaway, in a sense. We can afford to let guys like McCabe, Marble, etc. play through mistakes because it's not really hurting us in the short term (we were always going to lose a lot of games this year), and will pay off in the long run.
