Martin OK'd

Gone are the days of simply attending a presser then writing an article about it that breaks the news in the next day's newspaper. Now sports journalists have to tweet out everything being said on the spot because numerous others are doing the same. Then some write an article about it later with a bit more detail but the key points are mostly already known by fanatics. The profession has evolved immensely the last 20 years.

I can see how things like this would irritate someone in Rob's shoes. Having random internet posters leaking information that may or may not be true would be super annoying when trying to do one's job, even if it brings in a lot of traffic to the site. It basically forces one to have to reach out to legit sources and constantly bug them about the topic because if they don't, then they are trailing behind what could be a big story.

It can be a tricky situation as well as you don't want to constantly bug sources about things that are false, that could lead to losing those relationships and in turn losing good sources. Those relationships that have most likely been built over years are the foundation of a journalist's career. Jeopardizing that because a random poster posts something on their message board would be super irritating.

I'm not taking shots at anybody or trying to put words in Rob's mouth here. I'm just laying out a perspective on how Rob might see it from his point of view.

Why do people care so much about this? Yes reporters have different rules they need to live by, but to expect those people who aren't reporters to live by those rules as well is just stupid really. If people hear something and choose to post it here or on twitter, I just don't get why some get so freaking bent out of shape by it.

I agree. Some posters freak out when someone posts inside knowledge. It's weird. The ones that are BS are usually pretty easy to sniff out. Most of the others you should just be cautiously optimistic at best. Every one in awhile you can fully believe them before the story breaks. There's only been a handful of times that's happened to me and this is one of them. I haven't been burned (whatever that means) yet. If this one burns me, who cares? I'm a big boy. I can take it.

From our perspective it doesn't change anything. But it might from his. I gotta think that breaking stories is probably one of the most rewarding parts of his job. Maybe not tho.
True, but I was more referring about what's been said in this thread, I wont be saying anything anywhere else about this than this thread. In general though, yeah, one time twitter warriors looking for credit with guesses would be shitty to fight against. Id rather that what I shared stay in this thread so my source doesnt think Im a blabbermouth since he told me in confidence

“But defensively right now, I'm not sure I see anybody playing. Offensively, I think we have a couple opportunities perhaps. And then the third tier of guys to talk about are the newcomers. Certainly Zach VanValkenburg is going to be playing. Michael Sleep-Dalton will be out there. And then if Oliver is cleared, he'll be in there, too. So the three guys that came in as older players, we expect all three of those guys to contribute Saturday. It's going to be interest to watch”

Hmmmmmm....

Kirk sucks at secrets.

Kirk sucks at secrets.

Yeah, just the way KF acts it just feels like while it isn't final they have heard SOMETHING positive. It wouldn't be like KF at all to just have a player in the plans to play when he simply has no clue this late in the game if he were eligible.

I think the source was a weather man!
Unfortunately for us we still don't know whether he's been cleared yet. Guess I'll stay up until midnight for the third straight night to see if it breaks.

I'm calm.

So the Martin family in your best guess is lying...thank you.
As a certified out of box thinker ((I'm a systems analyst) ok, just certified) I have another theory to replace my last erroneous theory.... They are all telling the truth! The U.S. Postal service has lost the letter. Or maybe their carrier has pilfered the letter realizing its' great historical significance.

My real question at this point is will we find out Saturday by the fact the OM either starts/doesn't ?

Or are the Martins and Ferentz just playing us?

What kind of documentation is required exactly?

Why am I asking you?

I can easily picture a scenario where they’ve heard his waiver has been approved, but in the interest of reducing outside noise during the middle of game week, they’re sitting on it and then just going to trot him out Sat night. Then after the game, they’ll say they found out right before kickoff.

I am pleased to announce that I have absolutely no inside information. And, I have no idea what the NCAA will do. So, that settles that.
I don't know if I believe you or not! It's the ones that denounce knowing something you got watch out for. I learned that by watching the next 48.

If Oliver is not cleared to play Iowa needs to team up with some of the other schools in the country that seem to always get screwed by this unelected body of decision-makers. Time to use some of that distinguished Iowa Law School power to force the issue of non-conformity of the decisions made by this body. Someone needs to hold them accountable for what appears to me to be random decisions which seem to favor high profile schools over others. This is me ranting and being self- aware of its futility.

I guess traditional media need to evolve the story to beyond "he's cleared" and have a more in-depth piece ready to go

This whole thread has really shaken me to the core about the whole anonymous online poster with anonymous sources. I’ll never be the same.
