Martin OK'd

I understand that, the difference (one of many of course) between Rob and an anonymous poster like me on a board is that I am not a journalist, I don't have to substantiate any claims. I would expect anybody to be skeptical of anything they read on a message board. However, having been around here for two years I would hope that people would have some semblance of thought on my character as one who "doesn't make shit up. It's not like I'm a 1 day account with no posts to my name.

That being said, I've already mentioned that he/she is a close friend of Oliver (close friend of Connor Mac too) and went to West High with him, beyond that I won't say.
I don't doubt you believe what you're saying, but you without a doubt had to know that posting what you did would elicit a strong response form people on a message board. You got mad about being told you were wrong, when that's precisely what you did yourself.

I have read this entire thread and I don't understand why the people with their sources have been chastized so much. Maybe they made it up, sure. Maybe they didn't. Maybe their source is wrong, but maybe they are right. Nobody knows. But does it really matter? This is a message board, I come here to read things that I can't find out from press releases or journalists. Sometimes these things are just a bunch of smoke, but often times if there is anything breaking like someone getting hurt, in trouble, or any other rumors with our team or our opponents, its on here first.

Rob, I know you have a code of ethics to abide by, as you cannot release information without basis as well as permission at time if your source told you in confidence. But the posters on this topic don't have to, so it isn't a fair fight. I don't understand why you would take it personal, or really why you would even comment on this post at all. On this topic, I am sure you are telling the truth, but I could also see that if you contacted your source and they said that he is cleared but do not say a word, would you? Ethically I dont see how you could. And if you could, why do it on a message board, write an article and put it on the front page, its what everyone is clamoring for anyway.

Personally, and I will state I have no source or knowledge, but it is interesting to me that Kirk spoke so much about a player that has not ever played a down here before. I would have totally expected him to side-step the questions and use the whole "we will comment on those players who we know are playing Saturday" kind of thing. To go so far as to say he will play (to me it means he is in the gameplan then) on Saturday if they get the "green light" is very unexpected to me.

I would hope you would come here for accurate information. If I have no clue on a story, sure, roll out the speculation-rumor train.

I have a source here. One really, really close to the situation. I’ve said that multiple times.

But, as I’ve done before on other subjects, I’ll tap out. I won’t report anything else I hear on OM. I’ll let the anonymous posters report on it.

That caught me off guard as well. Like when a player is hurt Kirk rarely gives a clear or upbeat answer. Its either he's "got a repair coming up" if its very serious or he speaks with a tone that the player in question won't play if things are in doubt. And when asked further and says as little as possible.

This was different. Optimistic almost. Very talkative for Kirk. And with in the inexperience in Iowa's WR/TE group, giving practice reps to a WR who Kirk does not expect to play is downright about as anti-Kirk as anything I've ever heard of.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it or maybe Kirk is easing up a bit?

I think it speaks to how good of a player Martin is. If he has the opportunity to play then they want him to be ready to play significant snaps and know what he is supposed to be doing.

The whole point of my posts was to show how utterly dumb it is to come say you have a source and then not substantiate anything. especially when someone like Rob goes and checks with actual real people (who he identified) and shoots it down. You don't have to name names obviously, but at least if you're going to bark about something on a message board that you know will stir people up, then give an idea of who the person is (adlittedly that's hard to do if the person doesn't exist).

Otherwise, what's the point of posting it here? Even if you guess right, you still have no credibility, because I can say I anonymously predicted anything and be just as correct.

I'll tell you why you posted it, because you want to troll. Which is cool, but own it at least. It would have been worth a laugh.

Unfortunately as we have seen a lot in the last 10 years, every day we hear on the news, anonymous sources tell XYZ News that so and so told so and so ................................ It is maddening.

I am not trying to start an argument here, but it just seems for some reason you are taking all of this personal and I am not sure why. Yes, you have stated that you have a source very, very, very close to the situation, and I for one believe you and I am sure that everyone else does as well. But what if someone else had a totally different source, from a different end of the spectrum? Does that violate your stance or position somehow? I just don't get why you seem angry about it and why, if it is so false, why you let it get to you.

I would hope that if you have any information on OM or any other Iowa player that you would post it, because I would know that it is true. Thank you for all of your reporting on the team we all love btw, I don't think you get told that enough. It helps someone like me that lives a long ways away feel a little connected to the team.

What also feeds this is the transfer rumors when it started, some guy told some guy in a bar and it turned out to be correct in the end. So one instance feeds the next speculation.

I'm not taking it personal, I'm trying to do my job. I really don't know how else to explain my position,

What's funny about that one is Martin went home and almost changed his mind. If he would have, the guy who spread the info would have looked like a liar even tho he heard it from Oliver himself.

I apologize to you then, I interpreted your responses in this thread completely wrong.

It's gotta be annoying when you do your job for so long, then out of nowhere any friend of a friend has the platform to release info before you. If it comes out tomorrow he is cleared, it's going to be a foregone conclusion now. Without social media, it would be the biggest story of the year maybe.

I don't know about that. Rob is still the respected journalist here, not any of us posters. We will still continue to follow and re-tweet what he says on twitter, we will still visit his site and read every article he writes, listen to every podcast. I don't think it changes anything. He has more access more often than any of us. I think it's fair to say that we ALL greatly appreciate that he provides a platform for us to share our thoughts and ideas (and flame each other from time to time)

You have a good point, I can definitely see how that can be frustrating. However, people like Rob and all other professional journalists have rules. LIke a few months ago, I along with a lot of people were really wondering what was going on with Dayvion Nixon when he entered the transfer portal. According to all the press releases and professional sources, he was doing well in school, he liked the team and the team liked him, and he was going to get some serious playing time. During that time, I listened to Pat Harty's podcast, and they were talking about that when Pat said that he knew a lot of things close to the source but he couldn't say anything as it was personal business. I commend Pat for keeping his word, and to my knowledge I don't remember seeing any other credible rumors about it, but if a poster knew what Pat knew they would have posted it here. Was it our business? Should we even know? Probably not, its none of our business, but we all watch the wreck on the other side of the road even though we may not admit it. My point is that Pat could not do that. In this case, Rob can't do it either, no matter what he knows.

Why do people care so much about this? Yes reporters have different rules they need to live by, but to expect those people who aren't reporters to live by those rules as well is just stupid really. If people hear something and choose to post it here or on twitter, I just don't get why some get so freaking bent out of shape by it.

From our perspective it doesn't change anything. But it might from his. I gotta think that breaking stories is probably one of the most rewarding parts of his job. Maybe not tho.
