Martin in the portal

Crazy, wish we could have seen more of him. Iowa has more depth at receiver than I can remember for a long time. I trust the coaches to know who the best players are. Thought it was odd that he caught a TD in the first game and rarely saw the field after that. There was a blatant no-call defensive PI that was not called in the Michigan game in the EZ and I didn't see him much after that.

Bummer, I hope he finds some place he feels is really a good fit. I realize this is going to sound like stirring the pot, but could his departure relate to Dillon Doyle's transfer? I believe they were high school teammates at IC West.

Could be nothing, I just wasn't sure if the Martin and Doyle families were close.

Wish him well! Iowa needs to double Copeland's salary. The talent (current and incoming) at WR is the highest it has reached in KF's tenure.

I think he just wants to walk the earth, meet people, and have adventures. Like the guy in the tv show Kung Fu.

My guess is he moves to FCS so he can have immediate playing time. He can't afford to miss another year and he isn't likely to get another waiver. Whatever the case, I wish him well.

Man it's easy to have a knee jerk reaction to this... What it looks and feels like is a kid that's desperate to play now. When he had the chance to get in and fight for PT to play now. (granted he got no spring ball this yr to compete) and be in line to play a boat load next yr after Smith and Smith-Marsette graduate he still didn't want to compete wait and try...

And remember this is all after his family hired a lawyer to get him eligible to play right away last yr. Just a crazy deal. So I suspect he'll hire that lawyer again to try and maintain his yr of eligibility to play right away blame it on Covid or Doyle or who knows what. Unless he goes down to UNI or somewhere like that so he can play right away regardless. But man I'd be surprised if he did that.

I dunno about that. This Covid stuff will be the ultimate waiver card I bet. He'll play that and probably get it. I doubt he'll go the FCS route but maybe. I don't think you transfer from Iowa where even if he didn't play much this yr ( He's an injury away from playing quite a bit no matter what) he'd be starting next yr to go down a level just so you can play right away more. I dunno he's a unique kid. Hard telling what underlining reasons he may have if their are any.

IowaLaw called this transfer after the first Big 10 game last year when watching Nico Ragaini drop 5 balls and embarrass himself on punt returns, yet stay in the entire game while Oliver Martin rode the bench the entire Big 10 season.

Oliver must have rubbed Brian the wrong way (I hope he speaks out), and if this summer has revealed anything, it's that many players believed they couldn't get a fair shake at Iowa. It's a shame because Martin could have been a stud at Iowa. He was good enough to play as a freshmen at Michigan and was a high school all-American who was one of the best WR in the history of Iowa high school football...he sure as hell was good enough to play at Iowa the entire last half of the season when Brandon Smith was hurt.

I had two initial thoughts about that PI non call at Michigan. One, the refs were lousy on that call, they had already missed a couple grabs and holds and would miss more.

I also had the feeling that O Martin didnt fight hard for that ball, maybe I am mis-remembering but that is what popped into my head and maybe the coaching staff thought he was soft.

I guess we'll find out. I just think it would be difficult to get an exception one year after already getting one. But you never know how the NCAA will rule on these things.

He tried to turn but the Michigan DB clearly pulled him hard and out of the play. You can see him slow to stop and catch the ball, then his momentum completely changed as he was pulled toward the corner of the endzone. Watch his feet in timing with the yank.

Much ado about nothing. Kid was overhyped from day one. He was never going to have an impact no matter where he went.

Just like some kids are way underestimated, some are way overestimated. What makes me laugh hysterically are the people last year saying how the Hawkeyes were criminally underutilizing him and flipping out over his playing time when they had literally never seen him play football or seen him practice. They had it in their brain that he was the next Julian Edelman and couldn't come to grips.

I hate Michigan but that was an uncatchable pass. The ref in the corner called it, you can see him signal.

It was an airball and landed on the white dashed line outside the playing area. If Martin had tried to jump he might have sold it to the refs but even with no hold he wasn't gonna catch that thing.

Right call, IMO.
