Long Season

I just hate seeing a talented guy like Jok have a total waste of his senior year.

This is really bothering me too. Having a legit 1st Team All Big 10 player you'd think you'd just need a little around him to make the tournament. It's a long season, still plenty of time to turn it around.

So it's pretty close and he's only played about 100 minutes in his career. If he shoots a little better (which I think will happen for sure) it will be way better because he actually looks to score. Take away 2 stupid turnovers per game (which I also think can happen pretty easy) and he's starting to look very comparable to Mike.

He's not even close to being in the same stratosphere as Mike was last year and that's just talking offense. Think how much better Mike was at defense

Stats can be pretty dumb sometimes. Like the fact that his assists were high but he had no ability at all to feed the post. And the fact that a guy can have a high offensive ranking who doesn't even try to score.

Gessell's offensive rating last year was 109. That isn't high. Monte Morris last year had 123. JB's is 84.

I agree with that 100 - I didn't say that so I might have just interjected myself into your discussion all i was saying is it's way too early to give up on JB, I've actually been encouraged from what I've seen so far but I guess I didn't have huge expectations for a 3 star first year pg playing on a very young team to begin with.

I said it. Last year we had a point guard who did next to nothing the whole game then gave away every close game at the end. It was pull your hair out frustrating to watch and really killed our offensive flow.

We could actually have been a better team last year with a player like JB. Uthoff would have been a lot better off anyway.

Lol at not in the same stratosphere. I will almost certainly be more productive per minute than Mike on offense by the end of the year.

Always thought it was going to be an NIT year at best. They should have gone after a grad transfer or two. They just haven't recruited well enough. Baer is a nice player but shouldn't be a starter on a big ten team. Williams and Bohannon aren't ready to start. Uhl hasn't progressed. The good thing is they do have some young talent in the front court that will be interesting to watch develop.

Uhl had one of the higher per minute ppg on the team last year, was he as good as Clemmons, Gesell, and Woody last year?

What's funny is we always lose most of our non conference games against good competition anyway. In the last 6 years, We've beat North Carolina, Florida State, Notre Dame, Xavier, and ISU once. I can't think of any others. That makes us around 5 out of at least 20. All those years we came back and looked much better than we thought we would in the Big 10.

The problem is we play 6 good teams this year which will most likely be enough to eliminate us from a chance at the NCAA. This would have been a good year to only play 2 or 3 good teams and take our chances with strength of schedule.

Well the non-conference isn't over yet. At this point I'd hope we can win one of the 6, maybe two. Let's hope SHU, UVA, and Memphis all have strong seasons.

Remember UW started last year 6-5, with home losses to Western Illinois, Milwaukee, and Marquette. They ended up seconds away from the Elite 8. The point being teams can improve mightily throughout the year. I don't have the confidence in Fran to teach defense like they do at UW, but that's another story.

The silver lining for us is that we don't have any "bad losses" (Memphis might be by the end of the year) and that we have talent.

There were a lot of people on here ready to get rid of players like Mike and Woody and seeing fresh faces. There were even multiple posters that expected the PG position to be better this year than last which was asinine
I am one of those that wanted Mike and Woody gone. Mike was a sub par BIG PG. Just because CW is several steps below Mike, doesn't make me want Mike back. It makes me want a coach that can friggin recruit.
Woody played much better his SR season. Particularly on the defensive end of the floor. 1 decent season doesn't make me forget 3 poor ones. I've never been a fan of the 7' stiff type of Center. Rarely do they grade out as a + contributor. And he played dirty. Which I don't like. Nasty - I like. Dirty - not so much.

Anytime someone brings up a per minute stat in a debate it's because they are grasping for straws. If you are good you will play more minutes. Mike was an efficient PG offensively last year and a very good PG defensively

See I don't understand that, I knew it would be worse without them even if they weren't my favorite players

Morris was really high at 123. Uthoff was 116 last year. Jok was 114. Ellingson was 105 if you want to know how bad 84 is

If Jok (who is a really good offensive player is 114, I would say 109 is pretty darn good. Ellingson at 105 shows what a small sample size can do. That could very well be why JB is at 84. One good game would change his number dramatically right now.

The good news is, there isn't any really good teams in the Big 10.

Except for Purdue, Indiana, Michigan State, and Wisconsin. This is why reading threads on this website is pure enjoyment as the comedy at times is off the charts.

Yes, JB has been terrible this year so far and it could go up if he has a good game. Still don't know why you don't think PG play hasn't been much worse from last year when stats and common sense disagree

I just don't think we have the talent this year. Baer is our third best player and he'd probably be coming off the bench on most teams in the league

Replace the word "probably" with the words "without question" and I'd agree with you 100%.
