Long Season

We are softer than a baby's butt down low on defense. I don't get it...Fran has to be coaching them to get a body on someone, but every time a ball goes up, Iowa players turn and look at the rim. I've seen the "I miss Woodbury thread", but was hoping that wouldn't be the case. I'll say it, I miss Woody. Granted, we were in the process of giving up close to a hundred points, but right when we got back to 89-86 on a Jok three, we allow their post player to abuse us with offensive rebounds and put backs. No one even tried to block him out or get physical with him down low with the game on the line. We are not good and good teams are going to beat us very badly. Sure, we will average 75 points, but when we are giving up 95, well, that ain't good.

The good news is, there isn't any really good teams in the Big 10.

I was thinking 14-17 before the year, 8-5 non conference, 6-12 in conference. I did have us upsetting UNI though which doesn't look promising right now. But the big ten is a grind, didn't expect to lose at PSU last year when we were rolling and they had already beat Indiana too, so every team has a chance at an upset or two.

Recruiting a bunch of wings instead of true PG or true big guys was just stupid. I know Fran said he'll take the best available but it looks like it's going to cost us an entire season.

So you think he had a point guard available that could have helped us win but he chose to bring in Dailey instead? Unless you worded you're post wrong, you must think that because that's what it says. "His decision to bring in the best available (which was Dailey) is going to cost us an entire season". That means you think he had a point guard in the works that was good enough to help us win this year but Fran chose not to bring him in because he wasn't as good as Dailey.

You also say he should have brought in a true big instead of a wing, but he did in Kreiner who doesn't play. That means you must think he had a better big that Kreiner in the works but brought in Kreiner instead. Again, you either make no sense at all or your post was poorly worded.

I'm saying he needed to be landing PGs and posts early on, we have a million wings and that is a recipe for disaster for defense. He would have been better off leaving a scholarship open and try to land a transfer or mid year guy than offer Dailey in my opinion.

So it was poorly worded then.

I didn't see the Memphis game but did see the SH and Virginia games. The B1G Network analyst during the SH broadcast said Jok didn't appear to be interested in playing defense (paraphrasing). Doug Gottlieb said the same thing basically during the Virginia game. So he scored 42 vs. Memphis and that's great but did he play any better D vs. them than the other two games I mentioned?

If you're the senior leader on the team and you don't give much effort on D, then you set the tone for the rest of the guys and that might explain some things.

You are a lot more optimistic than I am. We have zero point guard play and are extremely soft. Jok cannot carry this team and sooner than later, defenses will figure him out seeing we have no other scoring threats.
Worse yet Fran still doesn't know how to teach defense. How many times do we need to see this story. We have a LOT of work to do on the defensive side of the ball. Just watching Seton Hall run layup after layup should tell us that. Jok plays matador D he'll fit in at the NBA level just fine.

I agree about Peter Buckets needing to step up on D as a leader. Seton Hall wings were driving the lane at will. Our wing D was better against Memphis (comparing it to sh game). Memphis - their bigs inside were open and they were breaking our full court press for layups.

With how bad our D was and so many stupid turnovers, neither game was determined until the final minute. We played bad and both of these games were competitive.

Cook was also 5 for 6 on free throws. Good job Cook!

Doug Gottlieb lost all my respect when he said the Big East is a better conference then the big ten. If only the big10 went head-to head with the BIG East in november to determine the better conference.

It still makes zero sense to me why Fran can't recruit a solid point guard. It's the one thing Iowa bball has been missing in Fran's entire tenure at Iowa. This team is starving for a facilitator in the worst way.

Fran has immediate playing time and a run and gun offense to sell and for some reason PGs still don't want to come here. Blows my mind.

Do you understand how good the defense is in the NBA? Saying nobody plays D in the NBA is the stupidest myth of all time

I'll never understand this either and it's going to cost him

Well like I've said before, Fran hasn't really gotten anyone big from out of state until Cook. The main difference is there weren't any in state point guards like Woody, Uthoff, and Jok.

Coming into the season I had hopes of an outside shot of being able to make the NCAA tournament. I don't believe these are realistic expectations at this point.

If it is a long season, hopefully, will help make for a shorter winter. They can still jell and do pretty good in the conference.

I just don't think we have the talent this year. Baer is our third best player and he'd probably be coming off the bench on most teams in the league
