Will Howard's definitely not a running quarterback. He's sitting at 3,779 yards and 33 passing TDs. He's the textbook definition of a pocket passer.

He isn’t a pocket passer. Much respect to his toughness and leadership, but I could throw to Jeremiah Smith and Emeka Egbuka. He is a perfect fit, in terms of what Ryan Day/Chip Kelly want to do. If it is just about slinging it, that is a big fat NO.

Lol, he’s not a pocket passer because his receivers are really good? The dude can’t run like Leonard for example or any of those guys and he slings the ball from the box. Not sure what you’re looking for in criteria…

Maybe because there are 7 QBs with better stat lines? As in 7 guys with more passing yards, and some with a whole lot of rushing yards? Milroe, Ward, and Sanders are all more productive.

With the modern offenses, I think most coaches are looking for the QB that, first and foremost, can process quickly, has a quick release and is accurate in the short to intermediate ranges. The complete package would be one that navigates the pocket well, but also quick enough to make defenses pay with the occasional run for a first down.

Fair, but I guess my point is that it is easier to find guys who can run and scramble well and teach them how to move in the pocket and be an okay passer than it is to find a Peyton Manning type pocket passer. Truly great pocket passers come along once every few years. Running QBs who can run a spread offense effectively are coming out of high schools by the droves these days.

I think Lester (like a lot of the more modern offensive coordinators) is looking for that hybrid type that thrives in the McVay/Shanahan/LeFleur offensive scheme: One that can process quickly pre-snap and snap, go efficiently through progressions, display a quick accurate release, and have the ability to punish a defense with a scramble now and then if necessary.

They don't necessarily have to have the stature or big arm. Purdy is a good example, as is Cousins or an early Rodgers.

A true dual-threat QB, where you would incorporate designed QB runs, a la, Hurts, Jackson, Caleb Williams, etc., is a definite luxury if they possess the other qualities. My guess is that Lester is thinking more Purdy-like, though.

CJ Stroud by far was more of a pocket passer than Will Howard will ever be. My definition of a pocket passer and your definition is just different. I’m guessing it is an age thing. I’m roughly 10-15 years older than you are and dicing people up from the pocket isn‘t the same.

I don't think Purdy gets top 5 money, even tho his #s back it up. He just wouldn't be The guy anywhere, he has to have the right scheme.

Dak's been successful under a couple diff OCs and is still vastly overpaid.

Add cousins to that list, who will never be in the HOA, but his agent sure as hell should be. No one has fleeced this league more than that duo.

There are like 5 elite QBs in this league, who can carry a team even with marginal talent around them. When the Redskins, and then the Vikings, and now the Falcons pay Cousins like he is a Top 5 QB, and thus cannot put necessary talent around him, they are doomed to slightly above average results. The Cowboys are exhibit B with Dak. Nothing but mediocrity because they cannot afford to fill holes other places.

Mayfield is the right model. He knows who he is and so does the team. You can win a lot of games with a guy like that. Hell, Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl. Joe Flacco. Brad Johnson. It can happen.

Purdy deserves a paycheck, but it should be around 25 million a year. That is what his skill levels deserves, but some fool GM will probably double that.

I used to think there were around 10 QBs that could make a team a Super Bowl contender but, maybe you are right, there are just 5. Bottom line is there aren't that many. Good QBs are hard to come by, pro or college.

A good case in point is Kyler Murray in Arizona. When he arrived he had that all important "potential'. The Cardinals baby coddled him trying to coax that potential out of him. But like most players, he kept his future plans aloof making it seem if they didn't pay him the big bucks he would be gone. So they paid him and he immediately has a torn ACL which cost him a year. He's recovered now and has made it clear he's really nothing more than a slightly above average QB and the Cards are stuck with his contract.

My thought is you need to appreciate a good QB when you have one. Wouldn't it be great if the Hawks could reasonably expect to convert 3rd downs on a consistent basis? Is that too much to ask?

Side note since your a barrister, I had a lawyer buddy whom I visited in his office once. I got to see the software you guys use for proofreading and whatnot, and holy shit. That ain't just the run of the mill Microsoft word grammar checker. I'm assuming there are a bunch of different softwares and with AI it's got to be even better now, but wow...

Obviously it makes sense because one effed up word/phrase in a brief etc. can potentially make or break a case or proceeding.
