Less than 60k attendance on Saturday?

Schedule also has something to do with it. If we were playing a better team that would certainly have helped attendance. I don't know of anyone who likes these type of games as well as playing another power 5 conference school. We don't like the FCS schools or MAC school games.

In the not too distant future tv revenue is going to much more than make up for any ticket revenue deficit. Just the way things are headed like the NFL in terms of revenue structure. Fans in the stands help motivate and win games and make it tougher on the opponent so yes fans in the stands make a difference. Some of the NFL games on tv makes one wonder if the stadiums were better than half full. Yet they make money and sell teams for huge money. That will continue to be the direction we are headed for the money because all those people at home with their big HDTVs that like to sit at home just add to the $$$$$ for tv. If we put a winner on the field certainly more fans will show in the stands just as in the NFL.

Cable companies are starting to lose money due to more and more people going to the internet for their entertainment. We will soon see a decline in the revenue from TV contracts. Don't know when it's going to happen but it's going to happen.
The schedule is brutal, no doubt. But without that brutally easy schedule, we wouldn't win 3 or 4 games. So pick your poison. Nobody is going to pony up to see us get crushed by OSU, PSU, MSU, Mich, Wisc and Nebby to go along with the usual loss to Iowa State and an FCS school.

It's because of the one thing that Barta refuses to understand: attending an Iowa football game live is a TERRIBLE fan experience. Yes, there's the game and the band and and and. Every team has that to some extent. Most I-AA teams have that. But, at Iowa, you're stuck in a stadium with horrible cell phone reception. Getting to the building is a pain in the butt. Tailgating is difficult if you don't already have plans or a place to go. The stadium is old and has zilch for amenities.

What this means is that if you're not giving a great experience with the team, you don't have much else to offer. Iowa hasn't had much to offer with the team lately. Therefore, you're getting these sorts of attendance numbers.

Maybe better cell reception?

And we win the first two and you have a full house for Pittsburgh. Illinois State isn't a big draw, but it's still disappointing since it's the opener.

I am not so sure about that. Would you rather watch sit in the 90 degree heat and watch Iowa lose by 30 to a Top 10 team? It's not the weather that is keeping fans away....it is going into yet another season knowing with certainty that nothing great is going to happen.

Well it doesn't exactly help when Iowa has one of the most pathetic non-conference schedules every year. Arizona and Pitt in the last 10 years. Thats the best we can do??? Terrible. Look at the future schedules of Wisconsin, Nebraska, Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan. Scheduling big time matchups and getting recognition by being nationally televised.

Well I'm excited. This is going to be my first trip to Kinnick to watch the Hawks play. I'm just hoping for a win or its going to be a long drive back to Tennessee.

People would show up if they thought they would see Iowa put up 45. KirK can't or won't do that. Doesn't matter who Iowa is playing.

I agree. Iowa fans come to see Iowa, not the opponent. Unfortunately, Kirk's teams tend to play down to the level of their lesser opponents, rather than kick their azz.

Why the hell do people need to be on their damn phones constantly at a football game????????????????? You take it with you on the toilet every time also? Damn phones have to go everywhere now and they have to work.

Wait... are you saying you don't take your phone to the bathroom with you?

I know the 2003 game was against Buffalo, but why such a small crowd? It was right off the BIG 10 championship, and the program was at an all time high. Surprised there wasn't a lot more in attendance.

As for this year, I think it is the combination of low expectations and a bad home schedule. If Iowa had Iowa State, Wisco, Neb at home, or if they had an Ohio State, Michigan or Penn State, then I think more people would have purchased season tickets. Non-season ticket holders are not going to purchase a single game ticket to Illinois State, North Texas, etc. So besides maybe Pitt & Minnesota, and maybe homecoming vs Illinois, the crowds are going to be in the 60K range.

Exactly right. It is $55 for an adult or $25 per kid. Pricey for a game against a small school. But I guess we aren't like ISU and discounting tickets heavily just to try to fill the stadium. They may brag they had more in attendance in Ames, but they are playing UNI and I bet in terms of revenue for the games what Iowa gets for ticket revenue is far above what ISU gets for that game. Maybe Barta will be out on Melrose hawking some tickets for sale prior to game. Would buy another ticket to see that. Winning will cure all.

Kinnick has been a great venue in the past for some of same reasons you find it to be difficult/annoying. Kinnick has been an intimate, loud, intimidating place for opponents...which makes for a great experience. ALL of that goes out the window when the team is boring, complacent, and lacking in mental toughness. Then, fans have nothing to do but complain about bathrooms, the watertower, and the walk down the stairs. None of that matters if the team is good and tough as nails. I don't go there to feel comfortable. I go there to see my team kick butt. It's been a while since that has happened, and now all I can do is just join the whiners. We've all become a bunch of whiners.

Win more, it'll be full. Lose the same way or more games, attendance will suffer.

It's really that simple.

Attendance for this game, given the way last season ended and all of the hand wringing for this season, neither surprises nor concerns me.

If we lose either of the first 2 games, or both (God forbid).....burn it down.
