Less than 60k attendance on Saturday?

It's because of the one thing that Barta refuses to understand: attending an Iowa football game live is a TERRIBLE fan experience. Yes, there's the game and the band and and and. Every team has that to some extent. Most I-AA teams have that. But, at Iowa, you're stuck in a stadium with horrible cell phone reception. Getting to the building is a pain in the butt. Tailgating is difficult if you don't already have plans or a place to go. The stadium is old and has zilch for amenities.

What this means is that if you're not giving a great experience with the team, you don't have much else to offer. Iowa hasn't had much to offer with the team lately. Therefore, you're getting these sorts of attendance numbers.

You didn't even mention my number one gripe about the Kinnick experience. They have shrunk the size of each seat to a point that I can not achieve a comfortable sitting position and when I stand, I blot out the entire field for three rows behind me.

The game day experience inside Kinnick is not very good compared to other stadiums I have been to.

TOO MANY ADVERTISEMENTS. Even the National Anthem is "Presented by".... blah blah blah. The Iowa athletic department is a whore to the almighty dollar, and as a fan inside Kinnick, it's really annoying. The ads are everywhere you look.

Last season they screwed up the music for the team entrance in both of the first 2 games, and constantly had volume issues. Sometimes they played music over the PA while the band was playing. Just a lot of instances where one hand didn't know what the other hand was doing. It seemed like amateur hour. Even ISU does a better job.

I'm actually looking forward to the decreased attendance at this game because we will have more space to sit.

Too bad the hot weather is keeping a lot of people away. I just hope that everyone that is capable of handling the does come to the game and stays hydrated. For the fans that can't attend for health reasons that is understandable. Cheer for the Hawkeyes at home if the heat is too much for you.

Dude. Please stop. Just stop. Posts like this make it obvious you're a troll.

There are a lot of people tired of KF and being average. They have seen success, set their expectations high, and the team has fallen short in extremely frustrating ways over the past several season. There is only one truly way for the fans to show they are sick of it, and that's to not show up to the games. Show the Athletic Department that this product is no longer acceptable. That's obviously what many fans have decided to do.

As a former season ticket holder, the decision for me was more forced due to having my oldest son born and not having to worry about child care each Saturday during the fall.

With that said the following reasons are probably why I wouldn't go back to getting season tickets:

1) The viewing experience is better on tv
2) I can grill and play bags at home, I don't need to be in Iowa City to get a tailgating experience.
3) I can drink as many beers as I want at home and not worry about driving
4) As soon as the Hawk game is over, I can flip over to watch other games, rather than spend another hour in a parking lot waiting for traffic to clear out and another 2 on the road.

If this isnt reason enough to stop scheduling FCS teams at least the Big Ten is requiring FBS opponents. I just have no interest in Illinois State and I know they are supposed to be a good team but that makes it even less desirable. Unfortunately Iowa will just replace this game with a Sun Belt team and the only OOC power 5 team we will play is Iowa State. Hopefully attendance numbers give the powers that be a kick in the butt to inspire change on multiple fronts

True, but Im thinking you wouldnt be in that frame of mind if Iowa was still good. Not saying I disagree with anything youre saying, I almost didnt pull the trigger this year for the reasons you stated.

That sounds like a hell a of lot of folks. How many is capacity? I bet it ends up being a sell out. Fans always come through.

I know this statement has been said over and over but winning will bring the fans back.

Maybe. But a lot of people are right about the "ease" of watching on TV and the attendant amenities or hassles that can be averted/avoided. Pair that with the almost-universal belief that the game day experience is nothing close to what many of us remember from "glory days", and it's almost understandable.

Living in Florida, I'd go back in a heartbeat if it was easy enough. But having been a UCF ticket-holder for several seasons, I "get" those who talk about some of the hassles, i.e., planning/parking/driving-after-drinking concerns/etc.

But, yes, three 9- or 10-win seasons in a row would probably bring a good number of fans back. I'm just not sure poor cell or wi-fi reception can explain away such a drop in attendance otherwise.

Another thought: Labor Day weekend. Lots of folks have other plans then. when I was at UI, I don't remember a single Labor Day weekend game. That was for either kickoff-classic types of games, or "marquee" preseason games. Big 10 almost never had games that weekend. To a lesser degree, it's also why I've never understood the recent addition of games on Thanksgiving weekend. Students typically go home then. Coming back for a Friday/Saturday game is difficult for those who live outside of the state.

It's Labor Day weekend and it is going to be hot. We win the first two games and I guarantee you the stadium will be closer to capacity for the Pitt night game. Winning fixes this issue. Amazes me we have a start of a new season and it seems many on here just want to ***** and complain and almost hope their team loses. Don't strain yourselves if they win and you have to start jumping back on the wagon. And if they do lose, then we will deal with that at the end of the season. I will be in Kinnick on Saturday as I will every home game this year. Win or lose. Doesn't mean I won't want change at the end of the year if it is disappointing but I am not going to sit at home. I'm in for 2015. Most pivotal year since 1998.

How does discussing the reported (potential) attendance of less than 60k equal wanting Iowa to lose?
