Kurt Bohls on 1700....

...at the end of the interview, when asked what Iowa fans should look forward to with Greg Davis....

1. Greg runs a VERY GOOD 2 minute offense. Said there were numerous occassions when Texas would be on the wrong side of the 30 and less than 2:00 left and they'd march down the field for a score.

2. Greg is very aggressive on the first play(s) after a turnover....especially if the ball is near mid-field.

That was music to my ears. Those are 2 of the 3 things that I want to see improved and I'm glad that GD appears to be a big proponent of them.

Unfortunately, I don't think this is going to be his call.

I know this is a rhetorical question, but here goes anyway....They why hire him?

For some reason, I have a feeling that Kirk took a good, long look at the landscape of college football and at our close losses the last 5 or 6 years and has realized that Iowa is a team that needs to find the "hidden" yardage and "hidden" points. That just finding an average of 3-6 points each game could have swung so many of our losses to wins. That's why I think he went outside the program to get this guy. Otherwise, why not just keep it internal with someone like Erb whose been with him since the beginning or Soup who appears to be an up-and-comer? I think we're going to be very surprised by what we see come this fall.

Might be wishful thinking but I agree.

I get the feeling that Soup did not want the OC gig. I know when I coached, I was just fine being a position coach...no aspirations to be an OC or HC.

If Greg gets to run his system with the way we develop O-linemen, I think this could be huge and I'm excited more and more. I can't even think of too many OL guys from U of Texas in the league even close to the caliber of guys we have and have in college. I checked on ESPN and we have the same amount of linemen in the NFL as Texas does.

Doesn't mean Kirk wont let him have complete control of the offense, but that falls under an overall philosophy decision, not offensive play calling.

But who knows, maybe you're right. I'm very happy with the hire.

How quick this hire was compared to filling the DC position speaks volumes. This was really fast compared to that situation --- and I think KF wouldn't have hired him if he wasn't going to give him some leash ... at least intially.

Kirk is not stupid...read what guys like Belichek say about him. He knows his offense was stagnant, predictable and needed a fresh view. I didn't say big changes just a fresh view and touches. Kirk will give this VETERAN coach as much leash as he needs. He will be training his son to be the play caller very soon...Davis is 60.

I don't think Greg Davis (or many OCs for that matter) would have come without assurances of freedom to make changes they felt were necessary. And say what you will about KF's philosophies, but one thing I do not believe is that he would tell his new OC one thing during the interview process and then act otherwise following the hire.

I believe there will be changes, the only question is the degree.

I love how it was always KF's fault. Even when he wanted to go for it, they look unprepared and scared to do it. (Stanzi and JVB) Hopefully Davis can come in with more preparedness and give KF and crew more faith in them and then we can actually try things or succeed at them when we need to.

KF was obviously ready for a change otherwise KOK would still be here. This is a good sign that things WILL be different going forward!

i'd be willing to bet that the DC position was filled last year.

+1
Its KOK job to have the guys ready to execute and too many times we looked like we hadn't practiced all week. That is on the instructor, the message or method during practice wasn't workin.

How do you figure about Brian becoming OC? I love how some fans are speculating this ... Think about this realistically ... Kirk will most likely hang around another five years or so ... The new OC will most likely be along for the ride during the remaining of Kirk's tenure ... Then we welcome in a whole new staff -- starting with the head coach ... So not sure where this "positioning" stuff comes from related to Brian ... I think Kirk simply wanted to coach with his son ... Brian is not going to be the next head coach at Iowa or the next OC ... He is simply our offensive line coach for the next few years ...

I don't understand: You are saying Texas does as well as Iowa sending O-Linemen into the NFL?

IMO Davis was hired because of teaching ability. He is supposed to be a very teacher of quarterbacks.

What has really killed offensive production the last two years is quarter back play. Stanzi was great for the first 2/3 of 2010 but he went completely in the tank the last five games or so and we all know how Vandenburg looked on the road.

I would be shocked if Iowa is not still running an I form zone blocking offense next year.

I really hope there is a change in philosophy regarding the way Iowa treats two minuet drill situations but I really doubt it. Kirk doesn't seem like the type who second guesses his beliefs on things like that.

Something I hope he does better is gets the plays in quicker. I remember Stanzi getting frustrated many times every game waiting for a play to come in. He would look to the sidelines spinning his finger. We wouldn't break huddle a lot of time until the play clock was under 10 seconds, making it nearly impossible to call an audible if necessary.

maybe his belief was that he didn't trust KOK to run a 2 minute drill, not that he didn't want to run one at all

If Greg can develop a good 2 minute drill you better believe Kurt will do it. It doesn't mean they'll do it all the time, but they'll try it. We weren't particularly good at it this year but we still did it because at points it was the only way we could get offense going during certain games/parts of the season. FFS he had a running quarterback in Banks, the guy isn't completely oblivious, he's just risk averse. Don't expect it at the end of the first half if Iowa's up 7-10, but if they aren't winning I wouldn't put it past him to give it a shot.

I get as frustrated as anyone else when he does something that begs an explanation, but it's hard to say he would avoid something that they were good at.

Does Davis know anything about SPECIAL TEAMS!?!?!? That's where we need someone who doesn't pee on us and tell us it's rain.
