Kirk Ferentz Downplays Stanley Being Listed No. 1 in New 2-Deep

In 18 years of KF at Iowa, there have been 7 legit opportunities at picking the best QB (there wasn't a true "selection" to be made in 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, or 2016...and 1999 and 2000 don't matter because the whole team sucked). So you're down to 7 true opportunities....Banks or McCann in 2001, Tate or Manson in 2004, JC or Stanzi in 2007, JC or Stanzi in 2008, JR, CJ or Sokol in 2013, JR or CJ in 2014, JR or CJ in 2015. In my humble opinion, he made the wrong call in 2001, the right call in 2004, the right call in 2007, the wrong call initially in 2008 (until KOK stepped in), the wrong call in 2013 and 2014, and the right call in 2015. So in 7 opportunities, KF picked right 3 times and wrong 4 times. That's not a very good % in my book. Is he perfect? Nope, don't expect him to be. But I would hope that in the most important position on the field, that he'd be right more often than not.....

2001 isn't 2002, you have no clue if Banks was ready as he even said himself he wasn't.

2013 Rudock > CJ at that point. I'll give you 2014, I think CJ had passed Rudock at that point, and the coaches realized it and that is why they name him the starter in Jan of 2015.

Plus with Rudock and CJ, it isn't like Rudock is JC or was a bum. He was and is a NFL caliber QB.

Dean, I tracked the stats in 2001. 2/3 of Iowa's scoring came with Banks at QB and he got less than 1/3 of the snaps.

He wasn't KF ready. Even if he was, I doubt unless KM was totally inept and when things were heading toward disaster, that if Banks was ready wouldn't have played. Iowa was 24 points from being 11 and 0 with 9 of those being at Purdue where they gave up 10 points late.

We'll never know. Against Michigan KM was 15 for 26 with 2 interceptions. Banks was 5/8 with 1 TD Pass. Banks didn't play against MSU as KM had 4 INTS and 1 TD.

Against Purdue, BB didn't play. KM 2 TDs and 2 INTS.

Against ISU BB had a costly fumble. KM 1 TD 1 INT.

McCann had 2 terrific games against MN and I think NW.

The offense did run better with Banks. On third down my memory says he was pretty darn good.

What do you expect BB to say....The coach shoulda played me? The guy was lucky to get a P5 opportunity at that point.

It also tells me that staff has an INABILITY to evaluate skills at the most crucial position on the offensive side of the ball. That gives me great faith!

Based on what we saw at the spring game, how would you evaluate the 2-3 qb's? Genuinely curious.
