It's not about being butthurt. KF may 100% agree with BG that they gave BF every possible chance to succeed. It just didn't work out. Now Kirk has to decide if he wants to start over.... Again. Maybe he looks at how much work it is to start over, to try new things and maybe he will decide he just doesn't have any gas left in the tank. He has taken Iowa as far as he can and he has nothing left.
Maybe he feels he has plenty left but isn't willing to do it how someone else wants or if he isn't in full control of the program? I think that's likely the driving force that leads Kirk to retire, which I think we all knew was going to be the case if he was forced to make changes, or at least I assumed we all knew that.

There are Pros and Cons in Kirk's situation. There's a lot of money to be made and the opportunity to make history on the pro side of the argument. On the Con side is the amount of turmoil that is part of college football; realignment, NIL, and the transfer portal.

Kirk did reach out to the portal to improve the offense for 2023. That would be a recognition that he has a problem on offense, so it is an admission that Iowa was talent deficient. In a way it sent a message to the team members on offense that they were responsible for the bad offense. If so, that would be misplaced blame when really it was he and his coaching staff on offense that are to blame.

Kirk has to weigh his future coaching success in the expanded Big Ten using the offensive system he has always used? If he has to sit down with the AD and explain what he plans to do to correct the problem then I'm not sure he is willing to do the sit down. I'd expect the AD would want to review candidates and approve who he would select. I'm not sure he could accept that if the AD feels his choice is not a solution.

The losses to Ohio State in 2022 and Penn State in 2023 magnify the disparity between them and Iowa. The Michigan loss in 2022 and the championship game loss in 2021 are other examples. It won't be easier with the new PAC12 members. Sometimes there is a vibe that Kirk feels he is doing Iowa a favor because of the disadvantages he faces in recruiting and I can get that. He will have to face greater challenges recruiting into the future.

He's 68 and money isn't an issue for him. I see him hanging it up after the season and maybe before the bowl game.

I wonder how much Iowa Athletics is willing to pony up for assistant coach salaries? I would guess our staff salaries are around middle of the pack, definitely far below what many of the blue bloods are shelling out. If Iowa agreed to bump overall assistant coach salary by 50%, including big bucks for Phil, LeVar, and a new OC, would that make a difference to KF?

I would guess not as I don't think he's had any limitations in regards to money while at Iowa. Making sure his coaches have gotten paid is a big reason as to why Iowa has been as successful as they have been at retention. Not saying Iowa is spending a mint or anything and you are likely correct, likely middle of the pack but I think we're all under the impression that this is what Kirk wanted and these are the coaches he wanted right? Otherwise, he had the opportunity to go out and get that high dollar OC at any point during his career. This is Kirk's program, or it was, it's not anymore and I doubt that sits well with him at all.

You listen to all the beat reporters that cover the program, they either think he is stepping down or they are undecided. Just a month ago the majority of them had Kirk coming back. That dynamic alone has convinced me he is not coming back.

As I have stated many times before, BG will have to replace both Fran and Kirk in 2024.

u could be right and this train could have been rolling for a while - maybe they know this is it for Fran too?

Is it possible, like Mr. Davis, that this isn't necessarily his last year of coaching football even if it is his last at Iowa?

One huge difference in play. Davis was 60 when he wasn't renewed at Iowa. Kirk would be 69 at the start of next season.

Not when you've been making a huge salary coaching football since the early 80's. At this point Kirk has plenty of "F you" money
And keep in mind we are just talking about his salary. I bet Kirk's investments over 25 years brings in just as much as one year of his salary does a year. I really doubt it's buried in mason jars in the back yard. The average person as most of us could live off interest quite well on 1 million in the bank a year. Just quick math is probably 100000 to 120000 a year off 1 mill in interest depending on what type of account i.e. 10 %to 12 % return on stock market. If it don't, please someone donate a mill to me so I can find out.

Capt Kirk just was just quoted as saying he plans on staying
Saw that too. Not sure I would put a lot of stock into any statement that is qualified with "My intent...." That's almost always a hedge.

I honestly don't think Kirk himself knows exactly what he is going to do. I'm sure he is shaken and struggling to focus his thoughts, and his family almost certainly is advising him to let the season play out then take the necessary time to make such a life-altering decision. My bet is that even Brian is advising him to not make a rash decision.

Obviously, time will tell. No doubt it will get interesting in a couple of months.

yeah, he said he wants to coach at least a couple more years.

Unfortunately, I believe him - he has to clear this up or recruits will start exiting stage right.

How much pride and humilty would it take for Kirk to hire another OC? Like, I can't even imagine it. Doing so would be him doing something he doesn't agree with. When this decision first came out, I assumed Kirk reached some sort of agreement ....but I thought that agreement was a exit plan for Brian. Now that I've seen his presser I think the exit plan is for Kirk.

All nepotism aside

The Captain certainly knew the Brain was doing
a piss poor job

Don't believe he wants to retire after this highly criticized year

Kirk might want to be remembered retiring after
a good a solid year

If he retires immediately after Brian being banished in a cloud of shame, if will seem as though he was forced out

He has too much pride for that, and wants to be remembered retiring as a hall of fame coach

However if Bobby is interested all bets are off
However unlikely that would be

Happy to be wrong....but oh boy...to me it looked like it was going the other way. However a lot of emotion yesterday and the gut is only human....and his son just got fired. Very happy he is staying.

Thing is he can respond by hiring an even worse OC. If it’s not nepotism the AD won’t do anything.

yeah i have zero hope for next year.

But then again I honestly havent had much expectation for this football program for about 15-20 years.

If Kirk decides to return, give me something more than Budmayr as OC. It has to be a serious commitment to change.
