Kakert on KXNO

Besides Sullinger in the conference who has a legit C anyway? Minnesota's centers are more defensive thatn anything, other than that nobody is legit on both sides of the floor.

JaJuan Johnson, conference player of the year
Jordan Morgan, Mich
Jon Leuer, Wis
Mike Tisdale, Ill (even though he regressed this year)
Luka Mirkovic, the masked man from NW

etc...

I've not seen video of Hubbard, but Phillip Miller looks pretty impressive, and according to Mac would jump at the offer if we gave it to him.

It definitely looks like we aren't sitting well with the bigs in this class. Fran said in his talk with Miller that he didn't think they HAD to get a big, and they would take the best players they could get. We seem to be doing that now. Get the best talent rather than settle for less at a position of need.

I really don't understand the love for Hubbard on this board right now. If everyone is so high on Marble then how is a legit big not the top priority? A Brommer/Archie 5 spot is flirting with disaster.

It is also hilarious to see people anoint Hubbard as a success story after being locked up for 4 years. Not sure how a dude involved in a gun crime is getting this much love when there are plenty of guys out there who haven't been to prison for a serious crime. Fran has built up some serious good will lately, I would hate to see him ruin it.

How big is Stokes? I don't remember how big/tall he is.

I haven't heard too much about how he is progressing. Hopefully he could give us a couple of minutes a game next year and then more and more as he continues through his career.

Well if we're not sitting well with any bigs this year, we should go after the best players that we can, regardless of position. I'd rather get Miller/Carter/Hubbard and (hopefully) Cezar than just Cezar and a big body that's not going to contribute a lot.

I cannot disagree with this (although the Miller thing seems like a long shot) but can you really imagine having Brommer or Archie getting all of the minutes at the 5 next year? That may be the worst combo in the Big Ten.

That depends on your opinion of those two. Personally, I don't think Brommer is that bad right now. And Archie has shown flashes each of the last two years. Another year working with Coach Francis could turn both of them into serviceable players. Brommer isn't that far away, IMO. And Francis worked wonders for Cole this year, as well as Brommer.

I get what your saying but there is no SHAQ in the group, no old school post player as far as I see. Plus most of them are seniors and won't be around. Morgan from Michigan seemed to be a Cole type of a player without a jump shot. Just saying that Iowa doesn't need a 6'10' 270LB center to make it. Fran wants players that can get up and down, if JC was 4 inches taller and 15 LBS heavier that would be an ideal center. I would love to get a legit C that fits the system but could see Brommer, Archie, Basabe, and White holding down a lot of minutes next year.

Brommer and Archie at the five will most likely result in a 3,4,3 front line frequently. It is hard to imagine that Brommer can stay out of foul trouble and Archie's foul shooting is going to limit his opportunities. Shaq's 50% is one thing, but sub 30% is a backbreaker for a team.

Valid points. Hopefully Brommer can reduce his fouls at least a little, and hopefully Archie can solve whatever demons are in his head (there has to be SOMETHING mental going on to be THAT bad at the line).

But I'd rather go a year with them at the 5, get another athletic guard/wing, and suffer whatever consequences, rather than burn a scholly on a player that's not really an upgrade.

Re ISUHawk's comments on Hubbard.

He would come in and be a junior like May and Payne, making it three in that class. I have a feeling if we take him and get Cezar we would still take another incoming freshman. I am just basing this on the logic of the numbers and nothing more. Look at the list of non-scholarship players we had on the team this year. Some of those walkons probably had scholarships. They won't get them next year if we have legit scholarship players to bring in. And since he would be a junior, they could still bring in four freshman.

Someone correct me if I am wrong on any of this. Unless I miss my guess we only have nine guys we offered scholarships to out of school. Anyone ekse that has a scholarship is a walkon that got one because we didn't have a full compliment of scholarship athletes on the team at the beginning of the year. That means we have more than four to give out if we want to.

Cully will be redshirting. He'll be a sophomore next season, not a junior.

TM I am not questioning that Cully redshirts, just wondering where the info comes from? Shoot me if I have missed something.

It's been talked about this year. Fran said back in December, I believe, that they would have to discuss that possibility (he and Cully), and that was when there was a possibility (however slim) that Cully might play this year. Since Cully still hasn't played, I can't imagine why he wouldn't take the redshirt.

So nothing official, just seems highly likely.

I was thinking that too, just didn't know if anything was official.

Not saying I disagree but i dont think it will be the end of the world. Ill prefer to bring in a JUCO big but if we dont I think it will be fine to play Brommer/Archie for 15 minutes each, tell them to rebound, defend, and they have 5 fouls to give. The other ten minutes play a combination of White/Basabe/McCabe and run like hell

I am still hoping for a big in this class.
Morgan of Michigan is a real wide-body with good hands, and postup game.
Bergrenn,Anderson,Dukan, and a 7fter from the #1 team in Illinois, all will give Wisky another big line to bludgeon Iowa with.
Payne,Roe,Nix and Green of MSU are big and long in the paint.
Minny is huge with Sampson,Mbakwe and Iverson.
OSU has Sullinger,Thomas and two 6'9'' top 50 guys coming.
Even IU has Watford and another 7ft Zeller coming.
Illinois has size coming in this year in Egwu and Shaw,to go with 7ft frosh Leonard.
NW still has mirkivic and curletti.

This league will still be big next year. We need another big, imo.

We'd have have three true posts in Archie, Brommer, and Basabe. Then we'd have White and McCabe who can both play at the four position. Not ideal, but doable. If we could get 15-18 minutes of quality defensive/rebounding/putback minutes from Brommer and Archie a piece we'd be fine.

2012 would look pretty bad, however.

I guess it depends how you define a post player. We will have three guys that will play the 5 spot, but none of them are true post players. Basabe is too small and the others simply aren't that good. Brommer is Jekyl and Hyde-one good game followed by three games where he has more fouls than points. Archie is Archie, not much untapped potential there and I say it is 50-50 if he comes back. If he graduates in May he should move on.

I understand the gamble of not going for a big. You have two guys that look like they have league honors potential on the front line in White and Basabe. If you can get a similar pair in the backcourt it would seem reasonable that you would be attractive to 2012 Big Men.

That could be better than getting a big that is not as highly regarded in Spring. The best 2012 players will sign in November. Therefore, if you sign a lesser regarded player now merely to improve your chances in 2012, you might miss out on the 2012 recruits.
