I bring up Minnesota because of their proximity and the fact that they had a very rich history at one time, too, and it didn't last. Notre Dame wouldn't be a fair comparison and USC isn't a midwestern school. You don't have to buy my arguments. Maybe Nebraska will be good next year. The crux of my argument is this. If I'm involved with the decision for the Big10, I take a look at Nebraska and ask what happens if they join the Big10 and then go a decade or longer as a 6-9 win team that sort of hovers around the middle of the conference. At that point, their national cache continues to fade for another decade. At the end of the day, I have to try to get national interest in Nebraska vs. Purdue or Nebraska vs Northwestern and the only place it will matter year after year is one state with a small population. If they were so confident in their national prominence, Osborne wouldn't be putting out the feelers to the Big10 right now. Of course I don't have a crystal ball so when Nebraska wins a few NCs in the decade, you can laugh at my argument.
