John Miller Keep up the good fight!

Just in case you haven't been reading the posts Shada, this is about a kid that has very little talent and certainly not D1 talent that is getting minutes on a major college team. Sure the problem is Lil Brick getting minutes because its perceived that those minutes are solely due to him being the coaches son, but to me it's more about a team that lacks depth and any real talent halfway through the 3rd season of this coaches tenure at Iowa. Add to that a coach that is coming out saying that his kid deserves or has warranted more minutes and you are going to get this backlash. There isn't a chance in hell that his kid would, could or should deserve minutes.

Now crawl back in to your hole until we almost win again and then tell us how great we are because I really like those posts.

It is AMAZING how much hand-wringing is going on on this board over one game.

A game where Iowa got the holy **** kicked out of them. 3 days later, no one is complaining about the entire team forgetting to show up, or Fuller picking up 3 fouls in the first 10 minutes, or how Michigan wiped the glass clean on the offensive end, or anything else that went wrong.

Instead...we ***** about how much playing time John Lickliter is receiving. As if his father - and this is the only time I have ever agreed with anything Freddy has said - has any other options.

But I guess John Lickliter is an easy target, since he is the coaches kid, and the team is struggling.

This is correct.

I'm well aware of what this thread is about. That being said, I think it's a red herring. John is an easy target because of the way he looks, and because he's the coaches kid. I'm right with you on the team lacking depth, and I don't think anyone would disagree with you on that one. That depth took a big hit when the other point guard on this team decided to go out and get another public intox. I don't think it's too much of a reach to see that if Tucker hadn't gotten himself pinched that John wouldn't be seeing as much playing time.

John may be overmatched every time he's out there, but he hasn't really done anything to embarrass himself or the team. To put it another way, he hasn't proven that his father was wrong to send him out there. Sure, he had a bad game on Saturday - so did everyone else on the team. John Lickliter wasn't the reason Iowa lost on Saturday, but since he got 24 minutes and Payne got 28, that's what people are going to complain about. I get that.

I'll go back into the same hole you went into while the team was playing well. I've never called this team "awesome" or anything close to it. I choose to focus on the positives, and things that go right. I'm under no illiusions that this team is going to lose a lot more than they win for the rest of this year and probably next year. That being said, I look for improvement, and up until Saturday afternoon, it was apparent to everyone that this team was getting better each time they stepped on the floor.

i agree with shadas revenge!! if little lick is playin next year other than garbage time u might have something,

maybe we feel good about paige in 2012??

You cant let Licklitter get away with playing his kid.

You need to keep calling out the Nepotism on your show

I respect you for having the guts to do it today.

Now there is a new article in the Press Citizen where he says his kid deserves more minutes? What!!!!!!!!!!!

I have read all of these posts and frankly I am shocked and stunned at the points Miller is making. As Iowa's number 1 Hawk, he really should know better. A few points in rebuttal:

1. Why does Miller think that Keno Davis would be willing to coach at Iowa? Didn't Iowa fire his dad? Why do you think Keno Davis will forget that fact and return to Iowa? It makes no sense.

2. You argued (relentlessly) that Alford was not the right fit at Iowa. All Alford did was win at Iowa (including two Big Ten tournament titles), and now he is winning big time at New Mexico. You were wrong about Alford as well.

3. Now you say your confidence "is shaken" about Lickliter because he played his kid. Do you really think he wanted to play his son this much this year? Was it Lickliter's fault that Jake Kelly transferred? You know better. Iowa is extremely thin at guard. What is he supposed to do? You have to give him more time.

Throwing another Iowa coach under the bus halfway into his third year seems to be your style, but it does nothing for the Iowa basketball program. I think you will probably get your wish and Lickliter will be fired. Who do you recommend should be hired? Who would have the courage to enter the negative wasteland that is Iowa basketball right now?

God forbid if Ferentz had not had a winning season in his third year at Iowa. I'm sure you would have gone on the warpath back then asking for his scalp as well.

The key to winning Big Ten basketball is recruiting. Can Lickliter recruit? You have to give him more time to answer that question. You cannot pull the plug now.

Your lack of patience regarding Iowa basketball is truly breathtaking. As powerful as you are right now (you are all over the message boards and on WHO radio), you are definitely part of the problem and clearly none of the solution.

I also thought that personal attacks on players was not to be tolerated. Beating up the coach's son because of his appearance, playing time, etc. etc. is simply wrong.

Most comments are not personal attacks, most are saying he is not D1 talent and should not be getting anywhere near the minutes he is...daddy is putting him in the position by saying that he should even be getting more minutes which is just wrong.

chosen: i think that this situation is just the breaking point for people who were on the edge. i slipped into apathy after that three went down at the buzzer some 4 years ago.

What situation? Lickliter gave his son heavy minutes in ONE GAME, and it was a game where Iowa got their ***** kicked.

I don't know what John has been averaging as far as minutes go, but I'd be shocked if it was anything approaching 24 a game.

People are making a mountain out of a molehill here.

+ .95

For the record, I get the lack of patience, but Iowa fans forced that issue and celebrated the change.......many ceebrated twice.

2. "All Alford did was win at Iowa"? Quick. Who won more NCAA games at Iowa? Davis or Alford?

Wasn't Alford supposed to take the Hawks to the next level? I guess that wasn't clarified to mean "up" and not "down".

3. What other Iowa coaches have been thrown under the bus halfway into their third years?

Why are you constantly calling out Miller specifically for his opinions on Iowa BB? Is it your red badge of courage?

You are just plain wrong re: #2, Chosen. Alford was indeed a tool and not the right fit for Iowa. Read an excerpt from the ESPN link (read the entire article if you have forgotten how self-absorbed Alford is and how he faulted everyone/everything else for his shortcomings at Iowa). Then compare his "truly out of my hands" quote with the excerpt from the official UI Ad Hoc Committee Report of the Pierce situation. (The link is also there if you want to read it in its entirety).

Excerpt from ESPN article:
Alford said the Pierce situation and case were "truly out of my hands."

Excerpt from Ad Hoc Committee:
Coach Steve Alford was asked for comments by the press numerous times in the Pierce matter. He was advised by Bob Bowlsby that he should show support for his player but indicate that he was awaiting the resolution of the legal matter. The distinctions required in the direction he received were difficult to draw, however, and on at least one occasion, the Big Ten media day, he stated with regard to Pierce that "I totally believe he's innocent. I believed it from Day 1 and I still believe it."

Report of the Ad Hoc Committee on the Pierce Matter (Raymond Report) - Reports - Office of the President - The University of Iowa

Alford is older, wiser and no longer thinking about IU - Men's College Basketball - ESPN

All Alford did was win? 61-67 Big Ten record over 8 years is winning? One NCAA tournament win in 8 years is winning? 5 out of 8 losing seasons in the Big Ten is winning? One Big Ten tournament title and Zero NCAA tournament wins in his final six years is winning?

Your response to Miller's position is unfair, way-over-the top and uncalled for. The majority of Iowa fans were plain sick and tired of Alford. It was obvious his arrogance and self-importance, along with his condescending attitude toward the Iowa program, had run its course here.

Not even close, it was not like Iowa was getting blown out by 30, it was a 10-15 pt game most of the time. Then after his son gets all these minutes the coach comes out and says he has deserved more? Oh really a walk on who should never see the court at D1 unless it is a 20+ pt game one way or another all of a sudden deserves more PT, and the ONLY reason that is true is because old Daddy is his coach.

Did you think Iowa ever had a chance of coming back in the game?

I don't think you have an accurate and complete recollection of what I said and when. Not even close
